Best credit cards for groceries of April 2025

Groceries are an essential expense, making rewards credit cards an invaluable tool for maximizing the value of these purchases. Our editors meticulously analyze the market to identify the best credit cards for groceries, encompassing cash-back, travel rewards, and other rewarding options.

While store-branded cards may offer limited discounts, a broader strategy often proves more advantageous. A grocery credit card provides the flexibility to earn rewards at top grocery stores, empowering consumers to shop where they prefer while accumulating valuable rewards. Moreover, many leading cards extend bonus rewards beyond grocery purchases, maximizing the return on everyday spending.

Since we first pioneered the concept of online credit card reviews in 1998, our team of financial experts has provided comprehensive and unbiased credit card reviews for more than 175 cards, plus hundreds of additional resource articles to help educate everyday cardholders so they can feel more confident about their card choices. Though our content may occasionally contain references to products from our partners, we maintain strict editorial integrity and advertiser relationships. Compensation never influences ratings, reviews or featured products. The difference between editorial content and advertising must always be clearly stated. Learn more

This card is hands-down one of the best cards for groceries in terms of the percentage of cash back offered. With an offering of up to 6% back on purchases made at U.S. grocery stores, it's a hard offer to beat. American Express is a CardRatings advertiser.

This card is hands-down one of the best cards for groceries in terms of the percentage of cash back offered. With an offering of up to 6% back on purchases made at U.S. grocery stores, it's a hard offer to beat. American Express is a CardRatings advertiser.

PROS
  • This card offers 6% cash back on all grocery purchases at U.S. supermarkets up to $6,000 per year. That works out to a maximum of $360 in cash back on groceries alone. Who ever said grocery shopping wasn't fun?!
  • Introductory 0% APR on all new purchases and balance transfers for intro_apr_duration from the date of account opening is a great offer if you have a large purchase on the horizon. After the intro period, regular RegAPR APR applies.
  • The welcome bonus offer is easy to earn and could go a long way towards future grocery purchases.
CONS
  • Some stores may seem like "supermarkets," but they might not actually qualify for the rebate. Wholesale clubs, superstores and alcohol retailers are typically the culprits for this confusion.
  • You'll probably want to leave this card at home when you travel abroad as it charges fees on foreign transactions.

PROS
  • No annual fee with your paid Costco membership and no foreign transaction fees.
  • You earn 2% on purchases from Costco and Costco.com which is great if you like to do your grocery shopping in bulk.
  • Because this card earns a robust 5% cash back rewards on gas at Costco and 4% on other eligible gas and EV charging purchases (for the first $7,000 per year) it's also great if you like to fill you car up with gas after you grocery shop.
CONS

  • Costco membership is required. While the card has no annual fee, you must pay for a Costco membership to apply.

This is an excellent option for anyone who doesn’t want to think about how they earn rewards, and instead, just want to earn them… no thought required. With this card you'll earn a flat 2X miles on every purchase you make. So whether you’re shopping for groceries at your local supermarket or at Target, making a travel purchase, or using your card to pay your gym membership, you’ll earn 2X miles on every dollar you spend. It’s as simple as that.

So whether you’re shopping for groceries at your local supermarket or at Target, making a travel purchase, or using your card to pay your gym membership, you’ll earn 2X miles on every dollar you spend. It’s as simple as that.

PROS
  • Simplicity is a beautiful thing when it comes to a rewards program. The Venture card gives you unlimited 2X miles for every dollar spent on every purchase, and 5X miles for every dollar spent on hotels, vacation rentals and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel.
  • In addition to travel, miles can also be redeemed for various travel expenses, such as hotel stays, vehicle rentals and theme park tickets. Miles can also be turned into cash and merchandise credit.
  • There are no foreign transaction fees.
CONS
  • If you do choose to redeem your miles for cash, the value likely won't be as strong as redeeming for travel or merchandise.
  • The current partner airlines with the Venture card are not the most common or frequently used for rewards travel so transferring miles may not provide as much value as other card programs.

PROS
  • This card offers significant rewards on purchases made at Amazon.com, Amazon Fresh, and Whole Foods Market. You'll earn a generous percentage back on every purchase from these retailers, all which offer groceries.
  • While this is a branded card, it still offers valuable rewards on everyday spending. You'll earn a generous percentage back at gas stations, restaurants, and on local transit and commuting, including rideshares. Plus, you earn a smaller percentage back on all other purchases. This makes it a versatile cash-back rewards card for nearly any purchase you make.
CONS
  • The welcome bonus isn't a bad offer, but it is fairly restrictive. There are other cards out there with more flexible rewards and welcome offers if that's important to you.

The CardName is good choice for rewards on both U.S. supermarket purchases and dining, but while most of the best cards for groceries offer cash back, this card gives cardholders Membership Rewards points that can be redeemed for travel, gifts or statement credits. Points can also be transferred to other loyalty programs such as Marriott Bonvoy and Delta SkyMiles for added flexibility. The Gold Card comes with more perks than we can possibly name here. A dining credit, Uber Cash and car rental insurance are just a few of the cardholder benefits. Enrollment required for select benefits.

PROS
  • If you like racking up rewards in a hurry, this card fits the bill thanks to its extensive rewards categories and high earning rates.
  • You can earn up to $10 in statement credits monthly when you pay with your card at Grubhub, The Cheesecake Factory, Goldbelly, Wine.com, and Five Guys (enrollment required).
  • This card also comes with up to $120 Uber cash annually; just add your Gold Card to your Uber account and get $10 in Uber Cash each month to use on orders and rides in the U.S. (when you select an American Express Card for your transaction). Plus, after using your Uber Cash, use your Card to earn 4X Membership Rewards® points for Uber Eats purchases made at restaurants or U.S. supermarkets. Point caps and terms apply.
  • There are no foreign transaction fees, which can result in big savings if you travel overseas frequently for business or pleasure.
CONS
  • The annual fee is hefty. It can be offset by the rewards you earn but not if American Express is not your go-to card.
  • Unlike typical credit cards, the card allows you to carry a balance for certain charges, but not all.
  • The overall rewards earning with the Gold card is good, however the travel rewards earning being higher only on specific travel purchases made through American Express can be a bit of a barrier compared to other travel rewards cards that offer higher points earning on most travel purchases.

The CardName is geared towards credit card users with a limited credit history and/or fair credit. It earns unlimited, flat 1.5% cash back on every purchase made, including grocery purchases.

CONS

Frequently asked questions about grocery credit cards

All grocery rewards credit cards automatically reward users for their purchases, but how they do that can vary by card. For instance, some rewards cards offer flat rate cash back for every purchase, regardless of whether you’re shopping at a grocery store or somewhere else. Others offer extra rewards for purchases at supermarkets. The best credit cards for groceries offer as much as 6% cash back when you shop at eligible stores.

This cash back accumulates in your account and then can be redeemed as a statement credit, for merchandise or gift cards, or as a direct payment. A few cards offer miles or points instead of cash back which can be redeemed for travel, merchandise or experiences.

Walmart and Target typically are not considered grocery stores by credit card issuers. Some companies, such as American Express and Capital One, specifically state on their websites that superstores are excluded from grocery rewards. However, you may need to read the fine print or contact customer services to confirm whether this is the case for other issuers. If you shop primarily at one of these big box stores, the best card for groceries in your case may be an all-purpose cash-back card that offers the same rewards for all purchases, regardless of where you shop. Learn more in our article, "Which credit cards earn cash back at Walmart and Target."

Grocery shopping is unavoidable, so maximize your spending with rewards credit cards. Look for cards offering bonus rewards at supermarkets and combine them with coupons and savings apps. Pay your balance in full each month to avoid negating rewards with interest charges.

Consider your preferred grocery stores and choose a card that aligns with your shopping habits. Utilize the card with the highest rewards for each purchase. Determine your preferred reward type (cash back, travel, etc.) and choose a card that aligns with your goals. If pursuing a signup bonus, meet the spending requirement within the introductory period.

Yes, there are several excellent grocery credit cards with no annual fee, many of which are featured above.

For groceries, the best credit card offers strong rewards (cash back or points) specifically on supermarket purchases. Look for cards with high grocery rewards rates, ideally no annual fee, and potentially a sign-up bonus. Some cards also offer extra rewards on other categories like gas or dining. Consider how much you spend on groceries, your other spending, and how you prefer to redeem rewards. Paying your balance in full monthly is crucial to avoid interest. Check the list above for specific card details to find the best fit for you.

Generally, you cannot get physical cash back at a grocery store register when using a credit card, like you can with a debit card. However, some credit cards offer cash back rewards on purchases, including groceries. This "cash back" is usually in the form of a statement credit or a deposit into your account, not physical cash at the time of purchase. That said, there's one notable exception: Discover cards allow cardholders to get cash back at the checkout of some retailers, including certain grocery stores .Learn more about getting cash back with a credit card.

Yes, you can typically buy groceries online using a credit card with most major grocery delivery services and online stores.

Using your credit card to buy groceries can help build your credit history. Each time you make a purchase and subsequently pay your bill on time and in full, this positive activity is reported to the credit bureaus. Consistent on-time payments are the most important factor in improving your credit score. Furthermore, keeping your grocery spending to a reasonable portion of your overall credit limit demonstrates responsible credit utilization, another key element in credit scoring. So, as long as you manage your credit card responsibly by avoiding large balances and late payments, using it for regular grocery purchases can be a simple way to strengthen your credit over time.
