What are the Discover it® - Cashback Match™ and Chase Freedom® bonus categories?
So what are the categories for Oct. 1-Dec. 31 2017? Well, as you might expect, the focus is on holiday shopping.
If you have either of these cards in your wallet, be sure to take advantage of your chance to earn up to $75 cash back in the respective bonus categories. You'll earn 5 percent back on the first $1,500 in combined spending at Amazon.com and Target with Discover it® - Cashback Match™ and/or 5 percent back at department stores and Walmart with Chase Freedom®. For both of these cards, remember that you'll only earn that bonus if you remember to sign up each quarter -- that's easy to do through your cardholder account online.
Neither card charges an annual fee and both come with an introductory 0 percent APR on purchases and balance transfers – 14 months with Discover it® - Cashback Match™ and 15 months with Chase Freedom®
The Discover it® - Cashback Match™ categories are pretty clear, but there could be some confusion regarding "department stores" with Chase Freedom®. Here's the deal according to the Chase website: "The Department Store category does not include supercenters, discount stores or specialty stores (i.e. stores that sell primarily one line of products such as shoe stores, pet stores, electronics stores, clothing stores)." You can check out a full list of qualifying stores here.
Notably, Target is NOT included among the department stores where Chase Freedom® cardholders will earn bonus cashback; with that in mind, even if you already have Chase Freedom® you might consider applying for Discover it® - Cashback Match™ if you plan to do a fair amount of holiday shopping at Target or Amazon.com. Since neither of these cards charges an annual fee, there's no reason you can't carry both and rack up the full 5 percent cash back across both categories. Remember, too, that Discover will MATCH all the cash back that new Discover it® - Cashback Match™ cardholders earn during their first year, so your up to $75 bonus cash back each quarter could actually be as much as $150 cash back.
*Terms apply for both cards
