CardRatings Editor's Analysis: Pros & Cons

  • Earn 40,000 bonus miles plus Alaska's Famous Companion Fare™ ($99 plus taxes and fees of $22 and up) after you spend $2,000 on your new card in the first 90 days.
  • Rack up more rewards with three miles per $1 spent with Alaska Airlines and one mile per $1 on your other purchases.
  • Enjoy a companion fare from $121 ($99 plus taxes and fees from $22, valid on Alaska flights booked through alaskaair.com) each year on your account anniversary, which should more than offset the modest annual fee.
  • Alaska Airlines services about 115 destinations, many of which are on the West Coast. You'll want to ensure the airline can get you where you want to go before deciding to apply for this card.

Alaska Airlines Visa® Business Card essentials

The Alaska Airlines Visa® Business Card is one of those niche market cards that you either absolutely must have in your wallet or you have no need applying for. It all depends on your travel habits.

Despite containing “Alaska” in the name, Alaska Airlines flies more than just to/from Alaska, and more than just routes within the Pacific Northwest for that matter. In fact, Alaska Airlines offers 1,200 daily flights to 115+ destinations across the U.S., Canada, Mexico, and Costa Rica. However, most Alaska Airlines nonstop flights are to/from the West Coast.

With that said, the Alaska Airlines Visa® Business Card is ideal not just for businesses who travel a lot to Alaska, but all around the West Coast as well. If Alaska Airlines is one of your airline preferences, you’ll want to take note of some of the Alaska Airlines Visa® Business Card’s top perks:

  • Most notably, there’s the 40,000 Bonus Miles + Alaska's Famous Companion Fare™ offer: Get 40,000 bonus miles plus Alaska's Famous Companion Fare from $121 ($99 fare plus taxes and fees from just $22). To qualify, make purchases of $2,000 or more within the first 90 days of opening your account.
  • Beyond the introductory bonus, you‘ll earn three miles for every dollar spent with Alaska Airlines, plus one mile for each dollar spent on all other qualifying purchases. Miles can be redeemed for tickets and other travel related expenses with Alaska Airlines and its travel partners.
  • Save with a free checked bag on Alaska Airlines flights for you and up to six other guests on the same reservation.
  • Get exclusive access to discounted redemption levels when you redeem miles for hotel stays at over 400,000 properties using Alaska Airlines hotels.
  • No foreign transaction fees.

The card has an annual fee of $50 for the company and $25 per card, and a 15.99% - 23.99%, depending on credit worthiness.

What our editors like most about the Alaska Airlines Visa® Business Card

If you do business that requires frequent flights around the West Coast, the Alaska Airlines Visa® Business Card is a "must-have" expense tool, if for no other reason than the amazing Companion Fare bonus. Simply purchase a round-trip coach ticket at regular price and you can use a special code to purchase a round-trip companion ticket for just $121 ($99 plus tax and fees). You receive one Companion Fare bonus as part of the introductory offer and then one per year awarded on your card anniversary. The companion pass is valid on Alaska Airlines flights booked on alaskaair.com

The introductory offer point bonus is strong too. Spend just $2,000 in the first 90 days you have the card and receive 40,000 bonus miles you can use toward tickets and travel related expenses with Alaska Airlines and its travel partners (some popular travel partners include Aer Lingus, American Airlines, British Airways, Condor, Icelandair, Qantas, plus many others). Miles never expire and there is no limit on the amount you can accumulate.

Potential downsides of the Alaska Airlines Visa® Business Card

You really need to be loyal to the Alaska Airlines brand to make the most out of this card. The annual fee of $50 for the company and $25 per card can be pricey if you aren't going to be using the card frequently enough to take full advantage of the benefits.

The rewards program is fairly pedestrian too, with three miles awarded for every dollar spent with Alaska Airlines and one mile per dollar on all other purchases. Miles can then only be redeemed for tickets and travel relayed expenses with Alaska Airlines and its partners.

How the Alaska Airlines Visa® Business Card compares to other cards

Alaska Airlines Visa® Business Card vs. Capital One® Spark® Miles for Business

(This card is not currently available on CardRatings)

These are two very different cards for very different spending habits. While the Alaska Airlines Visa® Business Card is best suited for frequent flyers, the Capital One® Spark® Miles for Business is a solid business credit card for everyday purchases.

Capital One® Spark® Miles for Business has a simple rewards program. You earn two miles for every dollar spent on all purchases and five miles per $1 on car rentals and hotels through the Capital One portal. Earn 50,000 bonus miles when you spend $4,500 in the first three months. Miles can be redeemed for travel on any airline or stays at any hotel or transferred to one of more than 10 travel partners. The annual fee is $0 intro for first year; $95 after that.

Alaska Airlines Visa® Business Card vs. Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card

Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card offers considerably more flexibility than the Alaska Airlines Visa® Business Card. If you extensively travel all around the country (or world), the Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card might have more to offer you. The introductory offer alone gives new cardholders 100,000 bonus points after spending $15,000 on qualified purchases in the first three months from account opening. That's worth $1,250 in travel expenses when redeemed through the Chase Ultimate Rewards® portal.

Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card rewards points can be accumulated by spending on travel, shipping, internet, cable, and phone services and social media/search engine advertising. Users can earn three points per dollar spent in these categories, on the first $150,000 spent in combined purchases each year. All other purchases, and anything beyond $150,000 a year in those categories, earn users one point. Alaska Airlines Visa® Business Card users can only earn three miles on Alaska Airlines purchases.

The $95 annual fee for Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card may seem high, but it comes with unlimited cards for employees, no foreign transaction fees, and a number of travel and purchase coverage benefits.

Alaska Airlines Visa® Business Card vs. CitiBusiness® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® Mastercard®

What the Alaska Airlines Visa® Business Card is for frequent flyers on Alaska Airlines, the CitiBusiness® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® Mastercard® is for American Airlines frequent flyers.

The introductory offer is 65,000 American Airlines AAdvantage® bonus miles after spending $4,000 in purchases within the first 4 months of account opening. The CitiBusiness® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® Mastercard® rewards program gives you two AAdvantage® miles per $1 spent on American Airlines purchases, as well as purchases at telecommunications merchants, cable and satellite providers, car rental merchants and at gas stations. You get one mile per $1 on all other purchases.

Both cards provide cardholders with one free checked bag for each ticket purchased on their respective airline.

Is the Alaska Airlines Visa® Business Card a good card?

The benefits and rewards program of the Alaska Airlines Visa® Business Card are fairly simple and straightforward. If you frequently fly with Alaska Airlines, you can reap rewards each year that can easily be worth hundreds of dollars. If not, the card probably isn’t worth the annual fee.
