Blue Cash Preferred CardTraveling and streaming services go hand in hand, right? Who doesn’t enjoy listening to their favorite album while riding the subway? Or catching up on a popular television series during a long train commute? (American Express is a CardRatings.com advertiser)

If this is you, take note. Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express recently added two new bonus categories where you can earn extra cash back:

  • 6% cash back on select U.S. streaming subscriptions such as Spotify, Netflix, Hulu, Pandora and Apple Music, plus many others.
  • 3% cash back on transit (ground transportation only) including trains, ferries, subways, taxis, ride shares, and parking fees.

This is in addition to 6% cash back at U.S. supermarkets (on up to $6,000 in purchases each year), unlimited 3% back at U.S. gas stations, and 1% on everything else – the standard cash back categories that Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express users have come to know and love.

Furthermore, new cardholders can look forward to an improved welcome offer of $250, earned once spending $1,000 within the first three months of opening an account, and there's also now an introductory 0% APR for 12 months on purchases and balance transfers, then 14.49% - 25.49% Variable. (See Rates and Fees)

The annual fee of $95 will remain the same; however, given the average price people spend at U.S. supermarkets alone, this fee can easily be offset. (See Rates and Fees)

Think of it this way, if you spend $6,000 a year at supermarkets (or an average of $500 a month), you could earn $360 cash back each year, just on those purchases. That alone is plenty to offset the annual fee.

Plus, one unique feature of the Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express that many people often overlook (or don’t know about) is the fact that you can earn cash back on gift cards you purchase at U.S. supermarkets, meaning you effectively have the opportunity to earn 6% back on more than just U.S. supermarkets and select U.S. streaming subscriptions.

Maybe you don’t quite spend $6,000 on regular supermarket purchases (typically that would be food) each year and you eat out a lot instead; however, you still want to earn 6% cash back on the supermarket purchases you do make, as well as on restaurant expenses. No problem. With the Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express you can purchase a gift card at the supermarket to earn your 6% back, and then use that gift card to purchase your next meal out.

Besides for the increased welcome offer, intro 0% APR period, and the new transit and streaming categories (plus some new card art), other features are staying the same. The benefits of being an American Express cardholder aren’t changing; the offers of this card are just improving.
