Answered By Mike Killian: Unfortunately when you leave a country, you also leave your credit history behind. This applies to citizens of the U.S. going overseas, as well. However, there are some things you can do to overcome this hurdle. First of all, if you contact the creditor in advance and explain the situation before submitting a credit card application, it will at least save you from filling out an application fruitlessly. Sometimes explaining in person helps, but also having a translated copy of your previous credit report to show them could make a difference to some creditors, also. Another possibility is if your employer has had a number of dealings overseas, they too might be able to assist you in getting credit.

If all of these efforts fail, there is one other option. A secured credit card usually does not do a credit check. You can go to any major bank within your community and ask if they offer a secured credit card program. They will require a savings account usually of $250 or more and will issue a secured credit card limited to the amount in your savings account. The benefit is that not only do you have a credit card like any other, but more importantly, a secured card develops credit history in the fastest possible way.

Secured credit card programs routinely report to one or all three credit bureaus as well as unsecured credit cards. But on-time payment history accounts for over 33 percent of your credit score, so on-time payment of any secured debt is the fastest way to build credit. Of course, you never want to be late with any payment as this is the same as pouring a bucket of ice water on your credit-building efforts.

So, although it is difficult to accept that all your credit efforts in your former country are left behind, all is not lost.
