Houston TV Crew Spurs Nationwide Sears Credit Card Retraining
A team of television journalists in Houston has prompted one of America's largest retailers to conduct emergency staff retraining on credit card acceptance. During a recent investigative report, researchers from KHOU-TV purchased big ticket items at major retailers using the credit cards of friends and colleagues. Cashiers routinely processed credit cards through point of sale systems without challenging some of the potential fraud warning signs, such as a man using a credit card with a woman's name or another researcher signing "not my card" on a receipt.

According to financial advice columnist Liz Pulliam Weston, most credit card processors prohibit retailers from requesting photo identification for a purchase. The policy assures consumers that clerks cannot copy driver's license details, such as date of birth or home address. However, representatives from Sears Holdings later told KHOU reporters that they would immediately retrain team members at Sears and Kmart stores nationwide to more carefully compare credit card signatures to signed receipts.
