Citi Dividend Platinum Select vs. Citi Diamond Preferred Credit Cards

Guest: sammy262
Post subject: Citi Dividend Platinum Select vs. Citi Diamond Preferred Credit Cards

I've hit my $300 rebate limit on my Platinum Select card so it's in the sock drawer. With the forthcoming gas/groceries/drugs reward reduction it will probably stay there.
I'm now using the Diamond Preferred card, which also gives 5% (5 points per dollar into your ThankYou account) on gas/groceries/drugs. I also use the Citi Professional card for office supply stores and restaurants. This gets 3 points per dollar into my ThankYou account.
Has anyone heard if Diamond Preferred is also cutting back from 5% to 2% on gas/groceries/drugs like the Platinum Select?
I realize points aren't as good as cash, but I'm happy enough with $50 gift cards for gas and restaurants and whatnot for 5000 points.

Citicards Platinum Select. I requested a check for $36,500 at 1.99% for life. Took 20 days for bofa to cash it, they were dumbfounded I guess. Best part was NO FEE. This was 3 years ago. I saved nearly $700 in finance charges. I've done many many more since then. But lately they are going the way of no max as mouse points out. Or they are asking for a $90 fee (bofa)

If properly executed a BT or Checking Cash Advance may be the greatest money you have ever borrowed. I see people on a daily basis that use them to get out of unwieldly debt levels, avoid having to take out a HELOC for home improvements, and even invest the funds to earn interest and get free vacations. But as the others pointed out, you need to know exactly what you are getting into, have an escape route if needed, and play by the bank's rules. If you need to setup an automatic payment to avoid late fees and loss of the promo rate, do it. Whatever it takes to make sure the BT works to your advantage, and not the bank's.

# of Balances Transfered: 5 to 6 per year

Interest Rate Offered On Transfer: variable
Duration Of Promotional Rate: variable
-- 0% for 12 to 18 mo
-- 1.99% to 4.99% until paid
I'm paying less than 2.25%, on average, on all debt (for 3+ yrs now). Total credit card balances range from $20K to $30K

Fee Paid To Transfer: variable - 0% to 3%
Average rate paid on transfers is less than 2%. Because transfers are paid off ove 2.5 years on average, with the average balance about 1/2 of the transfer amount (I typically steadily pay down balances rather than make minimum payments until end of promo) effective increase to debt cost from fees is less than 1.5% APR.

Combined interest rate and fees yield total effective APR of approx. 3.5%

Did You Save As Expected?: Yes. All monthly payments are made on time so that I've never lost a promotional rate prematurely.

------------

Explanation of debt management:

I'm not aggressive in seeking out new credit card offers with 0% terms. I expect that those who do typically realize effective APR's (including fees) of 1% or less. (I know, mouse -- you don't pay fees

I carry debt that finances durable assets (expected life of 10+ years) and home improvements (e.g. new roof, maintenance on 60+ year old brick ... house age 100+ yrs, replacement windows/casements).

I amortize durable asset purchases over 2-3 years -- financing rather than paying in cash since liquid MM funds are earning 5%. I prefer to preserve the liquidity for future financial flexibility. Home improvements are financed over 5+ years -- can be refinanced with HELOC/loan should interest rates on CC at later date deem it advisable. (Home is 30% leveraged with current mortgage/HELOC debt.)

the balance with the lowest rate will be paid down first, therefore , if you do a transfer make sure there are no purchases on the card at the higher rate. I have a RSB Card ( Known as Citizens Bank) that has two offers. 3.9 fixed until the balance is paid in full or 0 percent until Feb 07

I have accepted many credit card BT and low rate convenience check offers over the last five years. The amounts totaled in the hundreds of thousands of dollars. I always payoff the cards two weeks before the low rates end and have never been late with a payment. This month alone I will payoff four cards totalling $54,000. Next month the same issurers (Chase and BoA) will send me more low rate blank checks to begin the cycle again. I invest the money at local banks to earn a tidy profit.

THERE IS NEVER A DOWN-SIDE TO A BALANCE TRANSFER AS LONG AS YOU DON'T PAY MORE TO DO SO

Sometimes the BT FEE makes the BT APR "COST" MORE than what you are trying to pay off

Done lots of bt's and no problems...apparently the terms are too difficult for some folks...I have had several coworkers screw them up..not have the money at the end or put purchases on the card....it's not rocket science..know the terms and do some kind of tracking and have an escape plan.

ok thanks for the article....there is a max. bt fee of 50 bucks, but considering if you do a bt of at least 5000, you get the 5000 pts extra in the first 30 days....total of 10,000 points to start makes it not so tough to get to the 40,000 cash redemption. Easier than the old power rewards!

I just applied and was approved online....I dont have any other juniper cards (first one)....Didnt tell me what my limit was though

I will report latter in the day what CRA was pulled....plan to try to get the fee waived the second year or cash out and convert to another card if can.

I don't have a SMALL credit limit (by some standards)

That could be a reason

BUT IT IS SMALL WHEN MBNA QUANTUM ADVERTISES "UP-TO" $250,000

BUT I HAVE LESS THAN $35,000

AT UNDER $35,000 IT IS ONE OF MY LOWER LIMITS

OK, I apologize. I completely forgot that we do indeed do hard pulls when we receive CLI requests for people named Mouse, but only for people named Mouse...

For every other one of the millions of accounts we hold we do soft pulls on existing account CLI requests. Folks I'm not lying, I have absolutely no reason to lie about something like this. With the beautiful anonymity of the Internet, I am as free to bash my own employer (and any other bank) as everyone else here. If there is something about my bank that I dislike, you can bet that I'll voice it loud and clear (such as our remarkably cruddy rewards programs and the two-day timeframes for Internet payment posting).

Actually, I asked for and received a CLI on my own personal MBNA AmEx Rewards card fairly recently and it has never even registered with my Equifax credit monitoring service. Additionally, I very recently received my lending authority from the bank in question. Technically, according to said bank I can now call myself a credit analyst (although I admittedly still do not work in the consumer credit department). And although I don't work in the credit department, I still most certainly do increases/decreases/shifts in credit lines every day. Therefore, I am quite well aware of bank policy regarding credit line management and now pull bureaus on a fairly regular basis.

If anyone has any doubts, feel free to call MBNA's credit department. The number directly to the department is 1-866-297-4235. They are open 8:00 AM - 10 PM EST Monday through Friday and reduced hours Saturday (I think until 5 PM EST). Ask the analyst you speak with if he'll pull your credit report for a CLI (the answer will be yes). Then ask him if it will be a hard pull (he'll say no). Then just to be 100% sure ask him if the CLI request will in any way negatively impact your FICO (he'll say no).

As for Mouse's experience, without further details of his situation I will neither confirm nor deny his allegations. All I can say is his allegations run contrary to bank policy and this can be easily verified by each and every one of you with a quick phone call...

Credit Line Increase With Continual Usage of Credit Card

I've had this card for a couple years now, they never have increased my CL when I hit the button; however, with continual usage of the card, they will increase the CL through their own reviews of the account. Now that MBNA is BOA, it may change because I know with BOA they do allow automatic CL increases much as like Amex does on their site.

MBNA does not have a Luv Button, it will always present you with the form to fill out. This is because they are a judgemental lending institution (meaning a real human analyst always reviews the request, its not simply a computer quickly reviewing your FICO score). The good news is that with MBNA (this is not true with any other bank that I know of) CLI requests on existing cards are soft pulls... not hard pulls. Now if you have an MBNA account and apply for a new one, that would require a hard pull. But for a simple CLI on an existing account, it is a soft pull. Non-Transparent MBNA accounts should be running on BOA online banking by November so perhaps the Luv Button will become available very shortly.

In the meantime, given proper account usage the credit line hold should be removed from your account after six months at the latest. Once this hold is off you will begin to receive the auto CLI's every few months as long as you keep maintaining a good history/usage. CLI notices will be mentioned in the "Important News" section of your statements and may come on seperate BT offer notices every now and then. Also, if you call in to the BT department, reps will sometimes offer you instant CLI's as well (these CLIs tend to be the most generous auto CLI's the bank offers as well).

Mouse is correct. Quantum carries a minimum line of $10,000. Signature and World cards are both superior to Quantum in terms of benefits and features.
(MBNA hierarchy: Signature/World>Quantum>Platinum>Gold>Classic). Both feature no pre-set spending limits, extended warranties, special Visa/MC benefits, trip cancellation insurance, etc. that Quantum does not carry. My personal recommendation QikPass is stick with Schwab... you guys get preferrential rate and fee structures compared to regular MBNA/BOA accounts. Eventually Schwab will offer a Signature card and/or World card, it is in development now. At that point you can just upgrade your current account and keep the Schwab affinity (again this is definitely in your best interest).

I've never seen preapproved CLIs on there... but they give automatic ones periodically if you use the card. I can't really recall a time frame for the increases, but every now and then they just give you the pleasant surprise of a pretty significant increase... in my experience they have been better than all others at CLIs.
