Credit Line Increase on my Bank of America World Points Credit Card

Post subject: Credit Line Increase on my Bank of America World Points Credit Card
Posted: Tue Aug 08, 2006 4:16 pm

i received a BOA World points card with an initial CL of $3,600 and 0% APR for 12 months on purchases and BT's with a 3% BT fee with no maximum. i transferred $3,450 with a fee of $103.50 for that BT.

Now i feel stupid. i read on here where MBNA was soft for giving CLI's so i decided to ask for an increase after i made the BT. remember my balance is now $3,553.50 out of $3,600 CL. so its been 4 hours and i logged back into the site and they gave me an increase to $6,000.

is there anyway to call them back ask for them to see if i can pay them back the $3,450 they gave me and then do a BT again? i dont want to have to, lets say BT another $2,200 and pay another 3% fee which would be $66.00. EDIT: i feel stupid. i see that regardless i would be paying the same amount. if i was to BT $5,650 then the BT fee would have been $169 which is the same as making 2 BT's..for some reason i thought that was different. i guess it WOULD be different if there was a $75 cap but in this case its not.

Some of you might say its not worth it but i dont plan on putting the money back into my HELOC after the 12 months expires. the simple reason is is that i have a fixed 7.9% from then on which is less than prime+2-3.5 that i am paying on my HELOC.

I guess people were right about MBNA. they pulled experian which has no derogs, perfectly clean. NOW i cant wait til my MBNA world points comes in with ONLY a $2,500 CL. i will for sure ask for a CLI or should i wait til i BT? what do you think.. do you think the only reason i got a CLI was because i was practically at my limit with the first BT or would i have gotten the CLI anyway.

in the form online they ask you to give them a credit limit that you are asking for or for you just to leave it up to them so i just put $6,000 b/c i didnt want to be over eager. in hindsight i should have put in $10K.

thoughts?

%3 BT fee with no cap sucks.

Citi has 0% APR for 12 month no fee BT for most of their cards.

yeah well CITI checks EQuifax and i have 2 derogs from 5 years ago and 7 years ago and therefore i cannot get accepted. it seems that all BOA and MBNA cards are 3% no cap. Chase and AMEX have a cap at $75.

just received my 2nd BOA card that i applied for through MBNA. CL was only $2,500 but came with a fixed 13.99 APR after the 12 month 0.0% for purchases and Bt's. the first BOA card came with a 7.90% fixed after the 12 month period so he just said he would combine the 2nd card with the 1st card so that gives me a $8,500 CL now after getting the CLI to $6,000 on the other card. Now i feel sick because i could have waiting to see if i could get a CLI on the 2nd card THEN make a transfer to the other card but oh well.

The BOA rep also said that its counts as GOOD on my credit report if i combine 2 cards into 1. is this so and why? thanks for listening!

Wouldn't trust that list. Only the card issuers know the specific requirements and they ain't talking!

Here is our list of student cards (much more comprehensive):

On cardratings, to get a student credit card, it seems you have to have "good credit" already

That was a typo. So sorry for the confusion. You don't need credit to get a student card!

Thank you so much Board Monitor for the clarification! You can't imagine how confused I was about the "good credit" thing...So now I feel more confident applying for one of the student cards knowing that I don't need credit.

On a further note, is there any way of telling how successful I will be getting approved for one of those student cards? In other words, is rejection common for these cards?

Glad to help! Rejection isn't common, but it does happen. Have heard of AmEx rejecting students from certain schools in the past, but don't know if this still happens. Unless your credit is bad, I think you have a great chance of getting accepted.

Good luck and let us know how things turn out!

Student Searching for Best Credit Card Offer

Guest: azyan111
Post subject: Student Searching for Best Credit Card Offer
Posted: Fri Aug 04, 2006 2:50 am

Hi everyone, I'm a new member to this board and I would like to apologize in advance if this question has been asked and answered in some other thread...my situation is as follows: I'm 18 years old and will be entering college this fall...I want to only get ONE, hopefully, good card that I will use to buy books/clothes only...I've been on the lookout for good credit cards for students for awhile now but I'm still confused...On cardratings, to get a student credit card, it seems you have to have "good credit" already...I have no established credit whatsoever and am wondering if I should be looking at the "no credit" credit cards category instead...

If it's any help, I have had a personal checking account for almost a year and a half now....I HAD a steady job for about 10 months but I quit it a few months ago...which leads me to another question...do these cards depend on the student having a source of income? even though i do not have a job now...I am very responsible when it comes to money matters and i know that i will be able to pay IN FULL EACH MONTH for what i charge even though i don't have personal income from a job (i will pay using mostly the money I've saved from my job and parents' allowances that i deposit into my account)...how will not having a job affect me though?

As I've mentioned, I've been doing research on potential credit cards and have made a list of things to look for...is there anything i might be missing?
interest rate: which is better? fixed or variable? i'm confused on this...
no annual fee..
if possible, discounts rather than rebates...
fraud protection..no liability on unauthorized charges
oh..and what's the difference between secured/partially sercured/unsecured cards?

I apologize for the long post but all details are appreciated! thank you so much!!!

I am not a student, but am new to credit, so I know how it is. I started 7 mo ago with a secured card from BofA. Secured means you deposit money into a savings account that they hold as collateral. Your limit reflects the amount that you deposit. You make monthly payments as usual(with interest if you don't PIF), but if you don't pay they will use your deposit. It's a great way to start if you don't have any credit history. They report to the CBs each month(make sure that they do) and help you build your credit. Watch out for banks that charge high fees on secured cards though. The best one I found was BofA.

You may not need to go the secured route since you are a student. Banks are more lenient. I don't think your income or credit history matter as much. I don't know more about them though-sorry. Scan these boards-there are other posts about student cards. I also found some helpful credit card info on www.financeglobe.com It gives you details about what the requirements for approval are for each card. Thay have a specific student card category(although not all cards are listed, but you can search by bank name also) I would look into BofA or Citi Student cards.

Also, in doing my research it seemed that most APR's are variable. Which means they can change according to the market. If you can get a low fixed, go for it. But right now that probably isn't going to happen. The lowest variable that you can get is what you should look for if you might need to carry a balance. If you think that you will PIF each month, then it doesn't matter and you might want to look for rewards instead.

After 7 months of PIF on time, my credit scores are around 709(which is at the beginning of the good range). I recently applied for 4 cards and was approved for 3 and still waiting to find out about the other! I'm really stoked!!

Hope this helps! Good luck!!

Greetings and welcome to the board! Sorry to hear about your predicament. Most small business cards require a personal guarantee. Did they pull your personal credit when you applied?

Details on Chase Visa Credit Card Offer

Curtis,

Fine print on the $1 per 100 miles,

There's a cap per year $500 I think. Which is included in the cap on the card per year $1000. You have to have other rebates equal to the milage rebate.
I.E. if I drive 50,000 miles for the full $500 but don't use the card at all, I would get 0 rebates.
Also you have to sign up for the milage rebates (fill out a form, VIN for the car, and send that in. 1 car per card)
When you want to get credit for your milage, you have to fill out another form and send it in, with a copy of a "statement" from a car service showing milage.

Overall pretty nice, but the 6% offer on gas and groceries in limited to the first 12 months. After that it drops to 3%, which means I quit using.

My wife signed up for one of these a year ago, so the extra % is running out. I just signed up for one myself and will use it for the next year.

(Also, for some reason on my wife's card (it was a charter member) they messed up the rebate %, instead of the 6% they gave her 10%, so I definitely didn't call and ask:)

tony
Yup that is correct. The mileage reward cannot exceed the amount of driver's rebate earned for the year, which is fair enough. So if I spend $5,000 in grocery and gas per year and therefore earn $300 in driver's rebate, I can only get a maximum of $300 in mileage rewards, a result of driving 30,000 miles, more than anyone would typically drive per year I suppose (and to think $500 = 50,000/year is the max!!). So you have to use the card actively for all your grocery and gas spendings to be able to earn that mileage reward, and why not? 6% beats just about everything out there, and when the first 12 months is about to expire, simply apply for another Driver's Edge card, move the CL to the new card, and close the old one if you don't like sockdrawer'ing too many cards.

Might be a good offer for folks that want a chase card to use at superwalmart (assuming that this one codes 6% there like the 5% cards do...)....otherwise, I would rather have cards with sign on bonuses..

I agree with your SuperWalmart comment. However, I disagree with the latter. This is not an "either or" thing. It can be both. It's not like once I get the Driver's Edge card I will be prohibited from getting cards with $100 signon bonuses. I get all those cards too. They're "free money cards" to me. I get them for signon bonuses, but I don't use them. I use whatever earns me the highest % back from my purchases. Plus, the Driver's Edge gives me $1 for every 100 miles I drive. That's as good as if not better than a $100 signon bonus to me.

i've got this card and in the account benefits section when you online it says:

Quote:

Cashbuilder Awards - Earn up to 2% on new purchases in any month you revolve a balance of at least $500
Earn up to 1% on new purchases in any month you revolve a balance of less than $500 or pay your balance in full
When you reach your Registration Date Anniversary, you will receive your cash reward in the mail. Cash rewards are limited to $500 each year.

Perfect Card Rewards - Earn a 3% rebate on all gasoline purchases
Earn a 1% rebate on all purchases
All the rebates you earn are automatically credited toward future purchases
Earn an additional 3% on gas transactions during the first 90 days your account is open

Freedom Rewards - Earn a 3% rebate on all gasoline purchases
Earn a 1% rebate on all purchases
All the rebates you earn are automatically credited toward future purchases

Ultimate Cash rewards - Earn up to 5% cash back on Everday Net Purchases and up to 2% cash back on all other on Net Purchases. “Everyday Purchases” means Purchases at stand–alone U.S. supermarkets, gas stations, drugstores, and home improvement stores, for consumer consumption only.
Calculate the award for each billing period based upon the annual level of Net Purchases.

(notice nothing about first 3 months, 6 months or 1 year, looks like forever). Also this confuses me.. does that mean i get ALL that or just the one that gives me the most money per billing cycle? could someone explain?

Every one of these has an * by it saying to please refer to my rewards brochure for specific details.

In my brochure is says:
Quote:

You will earn 5 points per $1 spent on Net Purchases made at retail establishments that classify their merchant location for Visa/Mastercard as a gas station, grocery store or drugstore and 1 point per $1.00 spent on Net Purchases Everywhere else

notice it says nothing about the first 12 months or anything of the sort.

so does that mean if you go into a store/gas station etc etc and they have the Visa/Mastercard logo on their window then that means they classify themselves for Visa/Mastercard or what does that mean?

also what does that mean for me as far as all the benefits online via my account versus what this brochure says. i am thoroughly confused.
