I take back what I said that opening up a checking account will increase your chance of being approved for a card. I asked this question in person to the vice president and financial specialist of my local Wachovia bank (they issue credit cards that are serviced by MBNA). He definitely said it does not help with approval. However I just received an offer for a new Citi card in the mail (not a pre-approved offer). On the aplication there are check boxes for checking, saving, and "öther" accounts and an adjacent column for the bank name. In that column there is a check box for Citibank. So on this particular credit card aplication having an account with Citi will probably be beneficial.
This year I got approved for my third BOA card and my fourth Chase card. A few years ago I had three MBNA cards. So go ahead and apply to BOA. Once you get the card you can ask them to close one (the least desirable one) and combine the limits if you want to achieve the highest possible limit on a single card. I did this with my MBNA cards and they gave me an incredible credit limit. Opening a checking account at your local BOA branch will increase your chances for approval with a higher limit.
Chase preapproved me for 3 different 0% offers with different preapproval codes. Can I apply for 3 at the same time period? I also took an Amex within the same timeframe but I had applied and was approved instantly.

My initial limit with Chase was 20k with a 15k balance. I transferred over the balance to Amex with a 33900 limit.

Now I have:

Chase 0 out of 20k
Chase 15k out of 24600
Amex 15k out of 33900

If I took 2 additional chase cards would they approve such within the same time frame? I just took the 15k one and I didnt know the credit line so I just put in a 0% for 15k and if I look back I should have done it for more right? So I dont know what to do with the other 2 preapprovals.

Any feedback would be appreciative.

I have found that whenever I get a new card with a company I already do business with, the new credit line is almost always much higher than the earlier one. Take MBNA for example. My original card was $2500. I applied and the new one was $8800. They were also very willing to work with me on the limits.

Spjoink,

I have the plat World Points. I do like them very much. They granted me my highest credit limit right from the start. I have dealt with their customer serivce and I would give them an A+ - they very happily waved the BT fee (which normally comes without a cap) after I made my first BT. That said, I used this card for a 0% BT so I havent dealt with them a whole heck of a lot except to do the BT and pay my bill every month.

Another think I like about them is with their 0% BT deal you can do a BT anytime during the 12 months!

They just gave me a CLI, but they didnt give me exactly what I asked for. I asked them for 5k (a number I pulled out of my A**) and they gave me a reasonable 3k increase bringing my limit to 17k. I just got the letter this afternoon actually and they said "the new credit line was established at this level because you currently have sufficent available credit with us considering your income." I make 65k a year but I live in so cal (so as you know, 65k in so cal doesnt amount to much)... maybe they take location into consideration. Anyhow - I have a generous credit limit with them so I find that decision very reasonable. I have only been with them a year and I have my highest limit with them.

Overall they are absolutly in my top 3 favorite banks! They are tied for first with BOA in my books!

Hey Girlie,
I have 3 citi c ards , the first one gave me way higher limit than the last two ,but you can always allocate, except with chase they wanted to hit me with a hard inquiry....i would suggest you apply for either the aadvantage platinum world card by citibank , or the mercedes benz card by bank of america , they gave me a high credit limit....by the way i got approved for the us airways visa signature 2 days ago ....10000 cl.....my mercedes card is now 19500 cl....so its still a decent limit even if you get more than one card..
good luck

Girlie, MBNA is really good about letting you reallocate credit lines. Bad news is that I'm not aware of any really juicy 0% deals with them (i've seen some with uncapped BT fees, yuck).

Thanks Spjoink - I may be able to combine some limits if I look at a boa card like the Mbenz card too. I am gonna mull it over a bit.

Easy Rhino - yeh i fell into that trap last year... but I was able to soften the blow a bit. While they have no cap, if you are really nice to their credit analysts they are pretty flexible about waving the fee. My initial BT costed me....but the ones I did right after my app were all free. All that said, I didn’t realize some companies have caps and some dont until I went to do my BT with MBNA- so thats something I look at more carefully before applying!

Its good to diversify a bit. That way all your eggs are not in one basket and if you have a fraud alert that closes your BOA accounts, you have a card from company X that works.

Fire3000 - when you got your 3rd BoA and your 3rd MBNA cards, what was the initial credit limit like in comparison to your original two? Do you recall?

Thanks for the great advice guys - Tom yes thats something that crossed my mind too but I have cards with some decent limits from some different banks (BoA, MBNA, AMEX, Chase, Citi, HSBC, etc) - if I didnt, that would be at the top of my list of concerns.

Bank of America is probably the most generous bank for issuing multiple cards. It is not a rare thing to find many people having 3 or more cards from BoA, Capital One, and Chase. But some banks can be sticklers on just having one card issued, I have heard that HSBC is a strict "one per customer".
I do question how opening a checking account with BoA will improve your chances?

Most credit card applications ask if you have a checking or savings account, but they do not ask where. If a person applies over the phone and they say they have an account at the same bank it may be beneficial. When I applied for my 3rd BOA card I applied for BOA's Military bank package which included a checking account, savings account, credit card and debit card. I probably would not have been approved for the card alone. For the other question- my credit limits on my 2nd and third cards were significantly less than the first from each issurer. They evidently do consider your existing credit limits with them when applying for multiple cards (obvious of course). Last year I did have two HSBC cards at the same time (I closed one due to a measly 2k limit and they closed the other due to my recent jump in card debt).

Should I apply for multiple credit cards with the same bank?

Post subject: Should I apply for multiple credit cards with the same bank?

I am going to be applying for a new card or two so that I can get a good 0% balance transfer rate. My two highest limit cards are from BoA and MBNA (one bought the other recently) - 15k and 17k. I really like BoA and am thinking of applying for a new card with them (or MBNA). I need a high limit (about 10k) and both MBNA and BoA have a reputation for high limits.

I am hesitating though because I wonder if I apply with BoA will they go "holly cow we already have a lot of credit extended to this person lets give her a lower limit." I wonder with my current limits if they will view giving me more credit as risky and not give me a high limit. So my questoin is - am I better off applying with a totally different bank because of this? Or do banks typically not really care about that when it comes to credit cards?

I have to watch my inquiries so I need to be super selective about what carrds I apply for.

Any input is appreciated!!

Just received a Chase Debit card offer to use debit card and earn "points". The redemption rate seems to be 0.2 to 0.25%, which is miserly, and not going to entice any of us savvy users to switch from our 5% cards I hope.

However, they have an enrollment bonus of 5000 points, enough for a 10 gift card to starbucks. Check your email and don't delete this offer when you see it! (I did, btw, but fished it out of trash when I digested the words)

My Credit Score Lowered by Chase Signature Credit Card

Post subject: My Credit Score Lowered by Chase Signature Credit Card
Posted: Mon Jun 19, 2006 7:07 pm

My new Chase Signature account just started reporting. It reports "high balance" -- not "limit". Based upon the change in my credit scores in the last 30 days, I estimate the consequence of the reporting has been to lower my scores by about 10 pts.

I look to run the account up to near its limit over the next couple of months.

Ok, upon further consideration I'll take back the statement re the effect of this reporting on my scores.

My initial impression was based on the fact that my TU FICO (reported by myFICO) dropped from 725 to 705 in the last month. The signficant changes to my report were the addition of 1 hard inquiry and the reporting of 2 new accounts. It originally seemed to me that an effect of 20 pts was excessive for these factors alone.

However, upon further investigation, it appears quite likely that the impact of these 3 transactions on the New Accounts score factor (10%) is sufficient for a 20 pt drop.

Also, upon scrutinizing my report more carefully, the new Signature VISA account is reporting as an "Open" account (similar to Green Amex), not as a Revolving account. This, of course, makes a considerable difference and distinguishes the reporting from that of Capital One, for example. (FWIW, the minimum statement payment due is reporting.)

------

btw, I've taken some pains in the last few weeks to stress that credit scores obtained via Equifax are true FICO scores. This was further confirmed when I pulled reports/scores via both today and the scores were identical (718).

I now rank myself as a credit score junkie -- a little to my disappointment. At one time I had hoped I wouldn't join those who obsess over their credit score. However, I've been frustrated this past year in being a little clueless as to what significantly impacts my score and by how much. I figure taking a few months and pulling very specific information would be worthwhile as an education investment -- an experience that I hope will be beneficial to share with others.

hdporter, if you have 2-3 high limit cards reporting the credit line, it is not going to hurt your fico score to hide the revolving credit access line on your signature cards. My score is not affected positively or negatively, in fact, it provides a shelter to hide ALOT of available credit that you can tap into in an emergency. Also, you can always call chase at any time and ask them to report the access line.

YMMV, but I don't want lenders seeing an additional 40-50K of available credit. Of course, this is only good if you already have an established credit history. By the way, if a bank/mortgage co/car loan/ etc asks why the revolving line does not report, I have found that one call to customer service and they will talk to those people and let them know that it is their highest level card and they really back you up when needed.

I understand what you're saying, guess. However, I very much think it's the case that "Open" accounts are not evaluated for credit score purposes in the same manner as "Revolving" accounts.

"Open" accounts, by definition do not have a limit (the fact that VISA Signature accounts do have a limit blurs the line a bit, but FICO and other models will treat it as an account without a limit). It's my guess that, unlike a revolving account where no limit is reported, a utilization calculation isn't performed on an "Open" using the reported high balance. In fact, I expect these accounts are omitted from the utilization calculation all together. Were that not the case, I'd look for some account holders to get dinged badly.

Further information on this topic is needed.

Not sure about that , but the concern is how the reporting of high balance vs. credit limit affects the credit scoring utilization calculation ... it's the old Cap1 issue, though on a premiums scale.

My Chase-Sig account hasn't begun reporting yet, but should within a month. I'll be keeping an eye out and will report back.

Visa signature is considered a premium card by the banks , its for people with higher scores and therefor custommer with these card get higher limits , this is according to my private banker at Wells fargo.
Agai this could change , just like the platinum card became nothing more than a marketing tool

Signature cards have no preset limit, therefore no over limit fees. I did not ask chase to report the revolving line, I prefer the revolving line to remain hidden. Since I was turned down on some recent apps due to "too much available credit" it has worked out well.

I don't buy the argument it hurts your score. My score hasn't been affected by not reporting the revolving line and allows me to hide over 50,000 in available credit from other creditors.

There's every reason to expect that an account limit will be reported. A signature account isn't like Amex Green -- there's a specific limit assigned.

The difference between a Signature card and other credit cards is that it's agreed that charges in excess of your limit will be considered for approval based upon past account history and, if requested, supplemental resource information. There's no fee for taking the account over limit. However, all over limit charges must be paid in full at the next statement.

If my credit card balance gets too high, will my APR be raised?

It is possible that they will ratejack you across the board. I had over 50% on only one card and was ratejacked for that card. I think they would probably watch for a few months to see if you brought it down. If you didn't all heck will probably break loose. Limits decreasing, interest rates going up,the whole nine yards.

All my balances are from promotional low rate balance transfer offers. I deposited the BT checks into my checking account. Since the APR is fixed until the offer ends they cannot ratejack me. Yes, I am carrying the balance from month to month until the offer ends and then I gonna pay the whole thing back.

To be more precise my problem is the following. I received a 3.99% balance transfer offer from Bank of America that is very hard to resist. I have the possibility now to do a BT into my checking account but if I do it I will use up 75% of my total available credit limit.
{(Balance on Card1 + Balance on card2 + ... etc) / (CL on card1 + CL on card2 +... etc) = 0.75 }

I would like to do the above mentioned BT only if it is sure that no credit card company will decrease my card's credit limit or close my account.

What balance/credit limit ratio would trigger a credit limit decrease or account closing in your opinion?

asking for opinions, some folks dont go over 50% on any 1 card and I believe that lowers your risk. I think you need to figure out what you are comfortable with and have a backup plan if things go sour.

69.9681%

Seriously, your question is unanswerable. Every company has different criteria. What is your credit history with each company? Do you pay more than miniumum? Utilization with each company's card? Do you have a banking relationship with them? How much funds on deposit? What is your salary compaired to your debt? Etc, Etc.

Generally speaking don't go over 50%.

Hello,

Right now my balance/credit limit ratio is 30%. What happens if I keep spending and it becomes 80%? (I spent 80% of my available credit limit) I know that my FICO point would drop, but other than that will it have any consequences.

Can the following scenario happen?

The credit card companies get scared they close down my accounts and start harassing me by mail and phone to pay my debt back.

Thanks,

rmecseki

If you have anything with Chase, and they see your balance approaching your CL, they might reduce your credit or close your account, from past postings it seems like Chase is a real stickler on balance/limit ratio.

I assume that you are carring balances from month to month rather than paying in full. If the card interest rates are not fixed (for life or for a specified term), then some or all will get ratejacked to skyhigh levels of up to 32%. They are also likely to reduce the credit limits to near the current balance levels. Chase is very likely to ratejack. HSBC closed my unused card when they found out that I exceeded 100K in card debt (38% utilization with 98% consisting of low rate BT and invested cash advances). The higher the interest rate you are paying and the higher the utilization, the more likely you will default (what a credit score is supposed to measure). My advice is do not overextend yourself to avoid the headaches of credit problems.

Thanks for the quick reply.

Unfortunately, the newer card has better terms. Cap 1 doesn't seem interested in improving the terms, even though I always pay on time, and in full. There's only about 6 months history that I would loose though.

Unless your history is very young, 6 months wont hurt that much. You can even try REALLOCATING some of the old limit to the new card, leave say..500 bucks on the old card in order to keep it open. That way you keep your history, AND get more limit on the new card. Since Cap 1 dosent report lmits anyway, the reallocation wont hurt you at all.

NO!!!...

Don't COMBINE,... ask for a REALLOCATION.

That way your not closing the account, just moving somef the credit from one card to another...thus keeping 2 cards open, keeping your history, but having the greater limit where it would be of most use to you.

If you COMBINE, you will in effect close one card entirely.

If you close the newer card, you're not doing any harm, and will actually improve the average age of your accounts. And since your combined credit limits will still be the same, your utilization ratio won't change.

Capitol One

$7200 balance - delinquent during bad spell but followed procedure and got out of delinquency...have paid over minimum for four months since.

APR - 25.9% !!!!

Request: Denied

Reason: Account "restricted"

Great forum! I called a few about a month ago and had some decent results.

Household Bank MC - 17%V to 14%V ( so generous!)

Bank of America Visa - 15.99% - Declined - Still in promo 1.9% APR till June, was told to call back when non-promo rate is in effect

Juniper Airtran Visa - 23.49 penalty rate - Declined - They jacked up this rate because of a late payment snafu with Cap1 and have refused to lower it

Capital One Visa - 17%V to 9.9V (yay!) - got this card 5 yrs ago as a student card

AMEX BLUE CASH

Existing APR - 17.74%
New APR - 11.74%

Had this card from Oct. 2005, got 0% for 6 months.
Terms of this offer expired 5 days ago.
Rode the 0% and paid it off just before the expiration date. Existing balance on card is now $1200 on an $8000 card(not affected by interest rate as this will be PIF).

Guess AMEX is willing to negotiate interest rates right after their intro APR's are up. The did offer me a Rewards Gold Card free for a year for "being a good member",no credit pull, double pts, BVG, gold card events and up to 5 additional members free, but I turned them down for that one. Maybe if i had a regular blue card, i'd get it to combine points, but with the blue cash, its of no use to me.

You called? How in the world did you get to speak to an actual person? All I get is a phone tree and there appears to be no option at all to speak with a customer service representative.

On edit...

Finally got through to a customer rep by not doing anything at all when the phone tree asked me to enter my acct. number. Eventually you get an option to speak to a rep. Go figure. Anyway, went from 14.9 to 9.9 percent. Not too bad.

Wow. I wasn't much in the mood to push it but I just got off the phone with Providian (now Wash. Mu.) after being told by the rep that they are not taking "customer initiated requests for rate reductions." Has anyone else gotten this line of reply? I usually don't give up that easily but I'm tired and out of sorts today. I'll be paying off the special rate balance (1.99%) on this card in the next few weeks anyway but if they can't come down off the 19.49% standard purchase rate (variable rate at that) I just won't use their card in the future.

Discover went from 17.49 to 12.99 upon asking.

I think whether or not you have a balance is the key here. Big balance maxed, no dice, small balance or PIF always successful.

I,ve scheduled my last payment to Chase who just just jacked me to 31% APR last month. Once PIF and the new rate shows I'm going to begin asking. I'll let you know how it goes. I think they will be willing to play ball at $0............

I posted a few weeks ago about getting the runaround from Providian/WaMu about a reduced credit card rate. At that time they said "We don't take customer initiated requests for reduced rates." Since that time I paid off the balance I had with them, opened a new Chase Signature Visa account at 8.9 percent fixed and had Capital One reduce my rate to 9.9% variable. My FICO credit card score (via Providian's site) is up to 757 after my chapter 7 finally dropped off my CRA reports and is about 70-80 points higher than when I first opened my Providian account.

When I called today I pointed out that other lenders had been reducing their rates while Providian's rate for me had gone up nearly five points to 19.9% variable.

The rep first told me that there wasn't much she could do but I just kept pushing (politely) that I was very unhappy with the high rate that I had and that it made no sense for me to use their card when other cards had a rate that was less than half. The rep put me on hold and came back to offer a reduction to 14.9% which would put me right back where I was before they started increasing my rate. I asked "Is that the best you can do?" and she put me on hold again before coming back and telling me that after reviewing my account, they could offer 3.99% for the next three months and 11.99% variable after that. I told her to do it.

Bottom line: Rate reduced from 19.9 variable to 11.9 variable with a 3.99 three month introductory rate. Not too bad for fifteen minutes on the phone.

Requested Decreased APR on my Credit Cards

Post subject: Requested Decreased APR on my Credit Cards

I have a Direct Merchants Bank Mastercard, an Emerge Visa, and I had a Providian (that I payed off at X-mas yay!)

I called DMB after my monthly payment went up about 43 dollars and my finance charge went up about $10(with the new laws)and asked for a rate reduction and they dropped it to 18.9 from whatever it was (unsure at the moment) it dropped my payment back to what is was *and* decreased my finance charge by about $30 per month. Go me. But right after I did that they also increased my credit limit by 1K. Why would they do that?

However the Emerge card people told me I don't qualify for a rate drop, and were totally unhelpful and very hard to understand.

(tha card went from FNANB to Fleet to BOA to Emerge and every time it changed the interst rate went up.) I haven't used the card in almost a year which was right when it changed over to this hideous rate of 29.9 ouch.
