Every day your mailbox contains another interesting offer of credit or merchandise, such as catalogs, vacations, or credit cards. Shopping by mail gives you numerous choices and opportunities. However, while millions of Americans welcome these choices, others prefer not to receive such mailings.

I just made a payment to BOA Power Rewards card through MBNA Billpay (using my AAA MBNA card for payment) on June 2nd (it went through with no problems.)

Also just put through a payment for June 23rd same way and it is showing as scheduled successfully.

So, not sure how they are rolling payments out but they still work for me.

Mouse,
how do you setup MBNA Billpay to goto your checking account? and how do you use Cap1 as the middle-man?

thanks
tony

tonygoldston,
You can set up your checking account as a payee
on MBNA billpay if you want,
But Cap One is not one of the accepted credit cards you can use
as a biller.
I've been wishing it were too with those no fee trans. checks.

Why would they make it impossible to billpay to BofA, but not the other credit cards? Aren't they making it less attractive for customers to have BofA cards? WHat are they trying to do?

BofA & MBNA ARE ONE COMPANY

THEY CAN'T INTER-OFFICE BT (any longer)

CAN YOU BT AMEX to AMEX???

NO

Just BT to another card then BT from that card

I USE CAPITAL ONE AS THE MIDDLE-MAN

(FREE IN--FREE OUT)

I can even get like 55 days interest free from CAPITAL ONE

Credit Card Purchase Check Tips

Post subject: credit card purchase check advice

This message posted by e-mail request from one of the visitors to our site:

Hello, I discovered your website from "My3Cents.com". I have a very stressful problem with Capital One Credit, that all started 1 year ago, today. I attempted to purchase my wife a Hot Tub for Mother's Day, on Sunday, May 2, 2005. I paid $2700 for the tub, using one of the many, Purchase Checks that Capital One sends me every month with my statement. The agreement was for the tub to be delivered and set-up, the following Saturday, the day before Mother's Day. But, later Sunday evening, after checking out the quality and service reputation of the Hot Tub company, which included the B.B.B., I decided that I had made a poor judgment call in my purchase. So, first thing Monday morning, I contact Capital One Customer Service and inform them of my hot tub purchase and that I decided to cancel the order, and I want to put "Stop Payment" on that Purchase Check. The Service Rep said that is not a problem, she entered the Stop Payment, and asked if I needed anything e lse. I asked her for confirmation, what would happen if for some reason, I'm not able to contact the merchant before he has a chance to take my check to the bank and cash it? She said, when the bank teller enters your check info into her bank's computer to verify account number and balance authorization, she will receive a message that your check has had a Stop Payment Order" issued against that check, and it will not be cashed. I said, Good, that's what I wanted to hear. I then made numerous attempts to contact the Sales Rep and his Installers, but only received their answering machines. So, I finally decided to leave both of them a message, informing them that I had decided to cancel my hot tub order and I have issued a "Stop Payment" against the check that I gave him, instructing him to tear-up the check or mail it back to me. If you have any questions or concerns about my cancellation, give me a call at my home or office. Well, I never received any phone calls, an d they didn't try and deliver the hot tub, the following Saturday, so I assumed the deal was cancelled and he had tore-up my check.

Well, I received my monthly statement 20 days later, and discover that he had deposited and cashed my $2700 Capital One Purchase Check, for which I received nothing. I quickly called Capital One Customer Service and informed them of their failure to Stop Payment on my check, and I wanted them to take the $2700 charge off of my account, informing them, that is now Capital One's debt, not mine. Obviously they didn't agree with my statement, indicating to me, that the use of those Purchase Checks is a "Cash Transaction" and they are not responsible for Cash Transactions. Well, we went around and around concerning how Stupid I thought that statement was! I promise, I didn't start my disagreement in a Shouting manner, but they were masters at bringing it out of me. It all fell to deaf ears though. So did the three formal written "Dispute of Ch arges" that I submitted to their Dispute Department, as well as the letter that I sent to the "Capital One Fraud Operations" department. Since they admitted that I had cancelled my Hot Tub order, by not ever trying to deliver it, they made a fraudulent charge to my credit card account when they cashed my check. Capital One's National TV commercial with David Spade, claims if your Purchase Checks are stolen and used to make fraudulent charges to your account, You Will Have ZERO Liability. They refused me any credit for that lie too. The Consumer Affairs Office in Nashville, TN, sat on my Complaint of these Erroneous Charges and Piss-Poor Display of Mismanaged Banking Practices, for over three months, informing me that the Hot Tub store never responded to their Letter of Inquiry concerning my charges against them?

My beef is with Capital One, not the merchant. Had they Stopped Payment on that check as I was told had been done, we wouldn't be having this conversation righ t now, and my wife and I would be relaxing in her new hot tub. But right now, I can't afford to pay for Two Hot Tubs, and here comes Mother's Day again, but still no Hot Tub. I'm having to pay for the one that Capital One allowed to be charged to my account, due to their failure to Stop Payment of that Purchase Check.

Sorry for being so long winded, but this has been the worst financial transaction of my life. I have maintained an Excellent Credit Record for more than 30 years, and now, I have to regretfully say, Capital One has ruined my faith in the Banking and Financial Industry, and the value of maintaining it to such a high standard, only to be railroaded by them. If you have any thoughts or ideas, or past experiences with a similar situation, I would like to hear it. I realize I could and will probably have to hire an attorney to correct the wrong that they created, but my resources are limited and they are a Financial Giant to go up against in court.

Thank you for your time and consideration. I also want to thank you for your website, I found it to be very informative and an interesting resource tool concerning the subject at hand.

With so many problems with Cap One, my question is "Why do people continue to do business with them". For the most part the limits are small, and the customer service is severly lacking.

Don't judge a company based on isolated complaints. Cap1's been very good to me and I'm pleased with its limits and service. It has many millions of customers who seem pleased too. It used to have bad customer service when it was handling subprime accounts, but it's really improved its service and reputation in the last decade or so.

This poster's complaint, by the way, is directed against the bank instead of against the firm that cashed his check and never refunded the money or delivered the goods. His check wasn't stolen; his signature wasn't forged. I don't know if stop payments on purchase checks are even possible, and if he got a bum steer from a CSR I'm sorry, but there are dumb/ignorant CSRs. He should have tried to recover from the merchant. Is Cap1 at fault here? We're hearing only one side...and it may or may not be totally accurate. Note that, as usual, these diatribes are from people who can't even figure out how to register and post on this board---not a difficult thing to do! Nor do they ever respond to any questions asked...

High Limit Balance Transfer Tips

Author: pferd06

Post subject: High Limit Balance Transfer techniques?

Hoping some of you true credit gurus can weigh in here with some tips...

I have very high income, zero negative credit events, 10+ yrs history with Citi and Chase, but very high credit line utilization. I've made a practice of rolling 90%+ balances from card to card as transfer offers are received and I don't ever really use the cards for purchases (the balances function as cheap financing for my investments). So far I have:

$25K from Citi
$25K from Juniper
$20K from Chase
$20K from BofA
$11K from USB
$9K from Discover
$5K from Amex
$3K from HSBC

The low limit cards are recent so I haven't requested increases yet.

In order to borrow more and continue to attract balance transfer offers is it better to request increases from the higher limit or lower limit cards?

Is there a credit limit ceiling with any of these issuers I should avoid to continue getting balance transfer offers?

Are any issuers not named known to offer very high limits and balance transfers? Any standard cap on my total available credit from all issuers combined?

Any issuers known for consistently issuing balance transfer checks(makes my rolling process much easier)?

Thanks for suggestions

Post subject: Re: High Limit Balance Transfer techniques?

Hmm...it's hard to predict what goes into the pre-approval process for any balance transfer offer you receive. There are a lot of criteria that the credit card companies look at when selecting who to give the offer to. There are a couple cards that have good balance transfer offers and are available for everyone pending approval of course.

Citi Platinum Select Mastercard, 0% APR on purchases and balance transfers for 12 months, no balance transfer fee for initial transfers. The only exception is you can't transfer your balance from another Citi card unto this one.

Citi Driver's Edge Platinum Select, same as above.

Also the Discover Miles card, same offer as above.

I do have a question for you though, are you able to pay off all these debts right away? A good thing to do with a 0% offer on balance transfers is to pay the minimum payment from month to month, and hold all your funds in a high yield savings account or CD earning interest (Emigrant Direct is 4.5% right now for MM Savings). On the last month of the 0% balance transfer offer, pay the card down as much as you can before transfering it to another card, or if you decide to keep it on there, paying it down will of course accrue a lot less interest.

I don't know if this helps any, but this is the best I can give you.

They'll still send you a statement if there was activity on the account, and of course you'll receive the welcome packet with the terms & conditions if you didn't get it already. You can close the account any time, although it really wouldn't hurt you at all to keep it, and you may be able to earn rewards with it toward future Amazon purchases.

right, I just dont get how the whole thing works... lets say I have a 25 day period, does that mean if I pay withing 25 days.. I dont pay intrest?

Basically, they'll send you a bill, and you'll have to pay at least the minimum payment by the due date. If you pay the entire balance off before the due date, you won't be paying any interest. If you carry a balance of some sort after the due date, the grace period will be up on that portion, and it will accrue interest.

Well if you have opened the account and then close it, it might look somewhat weird on your credit report, the credit report shows the month/year opened, and then in the comments will show closed, having an account opened for one month and closing it will look like having a job for 2 weeks on a resume, I say just keep the card, they might have future offers (probably not as good as the first).

I am ready to try to transfer my $80,000 home equity line to a 0% card. I would prefer a card that gave me a large limit so I don't have to get too many cards. What is the best strategy? Just wait for the offers to come in? (I had one today) Or are go after certain cards? (Like which??)

The chances of your being approved for a card are more with the offers that you get, rather than going for the cards that you like. Also, since you have not detailed what your credit is like right now and what limits you have on cards that you already have, it is kind of hard to predict what limits you might get.

Some cards that might give you higher limits than others would be: AmEx Blue, Citi Platinum Select, some MBNA card.

Post subject: BT Offers

I currently have low rate balance transfers in effect on my Chase, Bank of America, Citi, Discover, Amex, and Capital One cards. I receive repeat offers from all of them except Cap 1 every six months. Chase, BoA, and Citi offer the best rates and rewards. Only AMEX did not allow me to transfer to my home equity line. If there is a Citi or BoA branch bank in your area, I recommend applying in person. Opening a checking or savings account at the bank branch will improve your chance of being accepted for a card. If you do not receive pre-approved card offers in the mail, than your credit score is probably low. Good luck.

Emerge Credit Card Payment Without Paper Statement

Post subject: EMERGE - again

Emerge is at it again.

My husband and I have been trying for a year to get his credit score up. We were about $700 from paying off Emerge and they stopped sending us a bill. I sent them four months worth of emails, got no help, no paper bill and interest accrued on the account. When I had enough, I sent an email to the Better Business Bureau in Georgia. I am waiting to see if they get something done for me.

In the meantime, we are waiting for a return receipt on the paid total. If his credit gets restored, I will log back in and tell you what a nice thing they did for us. Until then, I will say that they stopped sending us a paper bill knowing that most peple forget they owe such a small amount and it ruins the credit score. I didn't forget, although they are going to wish I had!

what is Emerge? So you think they stopped sending bills to get late pen. charges from you? For that much, why dont you just pay off plus residual interest?

What I do is send in an auto. monthly min. payment to my purchase card and bt cards so it wouldnt matter if I didnt get a paper bill.

Over the years I've seen nothing but negative reports about Emerge (Aspire) or Compucredit. Here's one of many threads: http://www.artofcredit.com/board/showthread.php?t=16656

I haven't checked recently but last year they had a satisfactory rating at the Georgia BBB. But that may not mean anything. I seem to remember that a BBB in Florida (Tampa area I think) was taking bribes to give shady companies a clean bill of health.

In another case, a BBB threatened a website for allowing posters to quote their reports without permission. Another anti-consumer move. I have little respect for BBB's anymore when I see the same rip-off artists again and again with excellent ratings.

I continue to follow the stories about Compucredit and hope to see a lawsuit or some action by the state attorney general. (unless that office has been paid for too)

Sometimes conspiracy theories are right and someone actually is following you. In fact, at this moment, someone is tunneling towards me. Time to move the burrow and stop reading so much Kafka.

BBB works for the companies. I wouldnt even bother. Your state probably has a consumer protection office. I know here in the upper midwest, they are often suing credit card companies. MN recently went after Capital One, although I think their case wasnt really getting at the real problems.

Cash Back Credit Card Review

Author: christopher
Posted: Thu May 11, 2006 1:46 pm
Post subject: Looking for cash back with service to replace Capital One

Just cancelled my Cap 1 visa. I have good credit and high limits on discover and did have on Cap 1 visa.

We had computer issues and paid our bill on line 3 hours late. Cap 1 charges fees on balances for 2 months following a mistake. Customer service was snotty. Paid the fees the first month and paid balance as soon as I got the bill. Second month they hit me with another $0.50. When I called, they refused to remove it from my bill. That's it. I'm done.

I do most of my purchases with Discover but some places don't take that, so I'd like to get another Visa/Master Card (preferably Visa). Would like cash back. I don't carry balances (except ones in last 5 years when computer caused 3 hour delay) so interest rate really isn't an issue. I do expect to be treated like a human though.

Any ideas?

I've heard a lot of people talk about bad experiences with Capital One, so here's my 2 cents.

A very good cash back card is the Citi Dividend Platinum Select. I have held with them for a little over a year now without any problems, and I've paid my bill online too. The cash back is what I love about this card, 5% on gas, groceries, and drugstore purchases, and 1% on everything else, up to $300 in calendar yearly rebates. Rebates do not expire, and once you reach $50 in rebates, you can request a check online via account access or call them.

Another good card is the Chase Rewards Plus Mastercard. Also, 5% cash back on gas, groceries, drugstore, and 1% on everything else, up to $750 in rebates per calendar year ($600 cash, $150 in gift cards, etc...). Chase uses a points system, so it's 5 points per dollar on gas, grocery, drugstore, 1 point per dollar for everything else. 10,000 points equals a $100 check, which you can redeem via www.choosemyrewards.com. You just enroll your card there. I would recommend redeeming at 10,000 points because 3,500 points = $25 check, and 6,000 points = $50 check. Points also expire in 5 years, but that shouldn't be a problem.

Another card to think about is the Fidelity Investment Rewards Mastercard, which is 1.5% cash back on every purchase, but you must have a Fidelity account to obtain this card. Also the Fidelity 529 card, which is 2% cash back deposited into a 529 plan.

Finally, the Bank of America Power Rewards card, which is 1 point for every dollar you spend, no limit to the amount of points you can earn in a year. If you can earn 30,000 points, you will earn a $450 statement credit, which is 1.5% cash back, or 50,000 points is a $1,000 statement credit. Only thing is, points expire in 5 years, so you really have to work your way up there, as even 20,000 points is a $200 statement credit, only 1% cash back.

Hope this helps.

Or do you always have to speak to a live person? Even though they've been nice, I'm just wondering because I'd rather listen to a recording than talk to a live person about an application.

Citi Diamond Rewards Credit Card Review

Author; ter
Posted: Tue Apr 04, 2006 8:03 pm
Post subject: To all you who recently got a Citi Diamond Rewards card...

I got this card in January. I thought that Citi's standard policy was that the initial 0% BT offer is good if the first transfer is initiated within 12 months of the account opening date (that was the case with my Dividend card). Anyway I was planning on waiting til November when I would pay back the BT I have on my Dividend card. Then I was going to initiate a BT on my Diamond card (after reallocating most of the Dividend limit) and stick the funds back into savings.

However, I wrote Citi yesterday to find out exactly what day my 12 months to initiate the trasfer would be up. Turns out with the offer I received in the mail, the 12 months at 0% was only good if the first transfer is done within 90 days . As fate would have it, yesterday was my 90 day mark. I went to the BT section of their website to see if I could still get a transfer going but the 0% offer was conveniently gone and had been replaced by a 6.9% offer which is worthless to me .

I know from reading the board that several of you just got this card and it sounds like some people might have responded to the same offer I did. Although the Diamond offer on Citi's website gives you 12 months it looks like some of the mailed offers only gave you the three months.

I am sorely disappointed because had I read the offer closer I would have realized the mistake. This offer also extended the 0% to 15 months if $100 was charged to the card before the 90 day deadline which I'd done. It is unfortunate because had I known I could have paid off my Dividend card, reallocated limits, done the Diamond transfer and had more money in the bank earning me interest for another 15 months instead of the small amount I have til Nov. from my Dividend card.

Anyway it is my own fault, I should have been more careful, hopefully someone else can avoid making the same mistake. I will most likely cancel this card now, I really have no use for it once I redeem the rest of the points. It is my lowest limit (although coolest looking card) and I never use it since I prefer cash back to points.

RBS Platinum Rewards Credit Card Review

Author: quiznut1

Post subject: RBS Custom Cash Platinum Rewards Card

I just found this card online, I can't find a link to apply for it online, but I was told by a customer service rep that I could apply for it over the phone. The number is 1-888-426-1114.

RBS Custom Cash Platinum Rewards

Here are the details:
3% cash back in the merchant category you spend the most money in every month, I will define them below:
- Airlines (including every carrier domestic and worldwide)
- Catalogers and Direct Merchants (such as catalog and telemarketing merchants)
- Clothing and Accessories Merchants (including shoe stores and children's clothing)
- Electronics and Appliances Merchants (such as computer stores and household appliance stores)
- General Retailers (including department stores and discount stores)
- Grocery Merchants ( such as supermarket chains and convenience stores)
- Home Improvement Merchants (including home supply warehouses and hardware stores)
- Hotels (including motel and resorts)
- Pharmacies and Medical Providers (such as drug stores and opticians)
- Restaurants (from fine dining to fast food)
- Service Providers (such as beauty salons and auto repair shops)
- Specialty Retailers (such as greeting card stores and antique shops)
- Sports and Leisure Merchants (including tickets to sporting events and movie theatres)
- Transportation Providers (non-airline - such as train tickets and auto parts stores)
- Utilities and Associations (including electric companies and gym memberships)
- Gasoline Stations (including every brand nationwide)

Everything else earns 1% cash back.

Now obviously you shouldn't use this card for groceries and gas, as the Citi Dividend's 5% cash back beats this one at 3%. But evidently they do all the "hard work" from month to month in determining which one of these merchant categories you spent the most in for that month. You don't have to change categories yourself. Whichever category you spent the most money in for that month is the category that you will earn the 3% cash back.

Talk about ease of cashout, once you earn $15 worth of cash back, they will automatically send you a $15 check with your next statement. I'm going to apply for this card to specifically replace my restaurant card, but this may come in handy for a lot of other purchases that would be cool to earn 3% cash back from.

Only thing I would caution (take with salt)

RBS unless anything has changed in the last 5 years, has no online site unless you have more than a credit card, and you can't make an online payment. I had a RBS Centura card from years ago, and had repeated problems with them "receiving" my check.

That looks like a great, great card to have! Thanks for posting!

There's a listing of merchants showing how they're classified. Some of the classifications are a bit odd. Amazon is classified as Sports & Leisure; Wal-Mart is General Retail; Office Depot and Mary Kay are both Specialty Retail (!); Costco isn't listed.

You're limited to $300 in rebates PER MONTH (!!!!).

Post subject: End of the year credit card summary?

This message posted by e-mail request from one of the visitors to our site:

I had happily been going along with my fleet visa card-now bank america card for about 25 years w/o any problems. I pay my bill in full each month and at the end of the year I get a year-end statement with everything in categories, which helps me with my taxes. The fleet cart also offered me points on each purchase. When Bank america took over, at the end of the year when I asked for a statement, I was told they no longer provide that service with my type of account.

I tried to get the type of card from them that would offer me the year end, but they said none exists. Is this true? I can hardly believe they would no longer offer this service to their customers. Are there any other bank cards that would offer both the year end statement as well as a rebate or point system or am I out of luck? I heard from you on the Rick Schaeffer program which I listen to as often as I can. I have also heard the founder of this firm speak, and I am so impressed. I hope you can help me.

Thank you, Kathi

Is There a Bonus a Credit Card Balance Transfer?

Author: robbed

Post subject: Ready To Pay Off 3k - Bonus from Transfer? - Earning Rewards

Hello,

I've decided to change how I spend money. In the past I've always used my debit card to make everyday purchases, but am now coming to realize that I could be collecting rewards by using a credit card like a charge card.

I have a few questions:

1. I chiefly want to earn miles on a major airliner, i.e. AA and the 25k promotion listed in this thread. Am I going to get better returns from using a credit card as a charge card instead of just getting a charge card in the first place? (i.e. Amex?)

2. I've been floating about three grand on a zero interest card for about a year, and am I'm now ready to pay off the card in full. Can I get any benefit from transfering this balance to a new card and then immediatly paying it off somewhere else?

I'm not in need of a very high credit limit, I just want to get a return on my day to day purchases. Any suggestions or pointers about where I should be reading are much appreciated.

Post subject: Is There a Bonus a Credit Card Balance Transfer
?

Most credit card companies will not reward you for transferring a balance to them. Instead of paying off this balance all at once, why not invest the $3000 in a CD or money market account. You could then transfer the balance to another 0% credit card while earning interest on your $3000.
They are giving you $3000 at 0% interest so why not make money off it??

You will still get a reward whether or not you carry a balance or not on your credit card. You are rewarded for the purchases you make, not the balances you incur.

Also, banks are starting to add rewards programs to debit card purchases as well so it’s not just restricted to credit/charge cards.

Ok, I was curious about this point. This is what I've been seeing as well. I saw one where you get 5000 miles for 5000 transfer but that's it.
Instead of paying off this balance all at once, why not invest the $3000 in a CD or money market account.
There are a couple of reasons for this. Number one is that it is only 0% until July, so it has to be taken care of pretty soon. Other reasons include peace of mind, I've been hanging on to this debt for a while it will be nice to remove. Also, if I weren't using the money to pay it off, I'd invest it in one of my business projects anyway.
Also, banks are starting to add rewards programs to debit card purchases as well so it’s not just restricted to credit/charge cards.
Yes, though it is too little too late. And I don't believe they could compete with the rewards from a carefully managed credit card. The potential return for CCC's if you pass your grace is too big.

Does anyone have a favorite airline card they like? I just realized that the 25,000 deal is for American, I was hoping to use Alaskan.

I sympathize with you Rob; it's a nice feeling not to have debt looming over your head. Have you looked into the Citi Premier Pass card? It gives you 1 point for every 3 miles you fly on any airline and 1 point for all other purchases including the airline ticket. I have had the card for about a year and I'm quite happy with it:

Also, here is a good offer from Bank of America for the Alaska Airline credit card:

My credit score was in the 720s when I applied for and got a Discover Card with a 3,000 dollar limit last November, which included a 12 month intro 0% rate on purchases and transfers. Now that the restaurant rewards are being phased out the card is a lot less useful in my opinion.

JoJo,

Might want to check out this website:

http://www.financeglobe.com/Finance/index.php?p=getdb&db_id=33

You can click on Discover cards and then choose a card. Under Credit Record Needed it will say the FICO score necessary to qualify for acceptance.

Pretty handy site to see what you qualify for. You can also choose Cards by FICO Score and see all the cards you will qualify for.

Good Luck !!

Yeah, jojo, my relationship with Discover has been one of love and hate. I had their 5% cash back restaurant card for about a year until they decided to cancel the program, and now I got converted to the standard platinum cashback card, which I must admit, stinks. On every other purchase outside of the get-more categories, here are the cashback tiers:

Annual purchases:
$0-$1500 - .25% cash back
$1500-$3000 - .50% cash back
$3000 and higher - 1% cash back

You can see what I mean. I get better with Citi Dividend's straight 1%! Anyway, the only thing good with Discover is they will give you the 5% cash back on get-more purchases in specific categories throughout the year (they alternate the categories once every 3 months, or 4 times a year). It just depends if you will purchase things in those categories. At the conclusion of last year it was internet purchases, from January to March it was "Health and Wellness" purchases, from April-June it is gas and automotive, and from July-September it will be education expenses.

I'll be taking advantage of the 5% cash back on education expenses in August, when I have to pay for my college. I'll be getting about $90 back as my tuition is around $1,800. So I'm excited about that. I can pay my bill, I just want the $90! Anyway, I would just recommend if you use a Discover cash back card, only use it for 5% purchases, which can be few and far between I know. Even their gas card is 5% only up to the first $1,200 in yearly purchases, then it is back to the standard rate of .25%!! Go figure.

I say go for it since your score is very good and you already have high credit limits. They occasionally call me at home and offer me low rate BT deals on my two discover cards. They also offered me special bonuses such as a $20 cash reward for transferring a recurring utility bill to the card. When I did not use one of the cards for six months, they sent me an offer to pay me a dollar for every charge up to 20 during the next 45 days. I also earn 5% on gas purchases. Their cashback rewards are not as good as Citi, but overall I am very pleased.

Umm...you do have a right as a customer to call and ask for a lower rate with your credit card. Most of the time they will at least offer you a better rate than you have currently. My suggestion however would be to find a card that is 0% for a year or so on transferred balances and transfer all your debt on to that one card. You'll save a ton of interest this way.

Otherwise, the credit card companies have the right to charge whatever rate they want to. Why? They eliminated the usury law several years ago that capped interest rates banks could charge customers. The only major bank I can think of that is still under at least some regulation is Bank of America. Their headquarters are in Arizona, and the state law I believe is a jaw dropping 35.9%!

I didn't know we have a right to a lower rate, but everytime my dad has called and threatened to cancel a card if the rate doesn't go lower, the companies have given him a much better rate. Of course, he has a pristine credit rating and has cards that have fixed low APRs so he has some negotiating room. I don't carry balances, so I don't have personal experience getting better rates.

Besides power, you've also got Fidelity (1.5% if you have a Fidelity account, 2% if it's a 529 college saver). And Amex Blue Cash (1.5% once you pass the tiers).

Honestly though, I'm thinking there's more to be gained by getting lots and lots of 3/5% back with specialty cards... it's just a nightmare on your wallet.

quiznut,

Ya, I hear ya'!!! Just tryin' to think it out before I've got a chimney full of plastic......LOL!!! That timeline still gets me. The 3/5% cards would definitely hamper my spending to achieve that 2% within the time limit so I have to think hard before I commit to something like the B of A!

Rhino,

I agree about the 3/5% thing. I guess it's about exactly as it should be. If you *want* 3/5%, you're gonna have limits, you're gonna have to manage a lot of cards and.......well........."work for it!"

As for the wallet burden........ya............Here's an ugly scenario.........

"Dude.....did you **** yourself?? Your backside's lookin' kinda' full!"

"Oh that.....No. Those are just my credit cards!"

For me, the Emigrant Direct card is the best flat-rate card. I say this because I qualify for the 1.40%, I don't spend enough to qualify for the Amex Blue benefits, nor could I get the necessary points on the BOA card before they would expire, and I dont have a fidelity account. So for *me*, the Emigrant Direct card is the best.

Daivd-

Great point! The best card often depends on one's individual spending habits and lifestyle.
