Should I close my home equity account when I transfer the balance to a credit card?

Oh. OK. My HELOC doesn't work that way.

So just find out the minimum balance you need to maintain to avoid the closing fee.

I just started reading more about this heloc. They issued me a credit line of 7500.00. It seems that the finance charges are based on the average daily balance.

Im new to all of this. In fact when I refinanced my home, I showed up at closing with check in hand for all closing costs. The mortgage lender somehow convinced me that day that it would be easier and much more convenient to roll my closing costs into a heloc. People can be pretty convincing for a kick back.

So I think I will try and transfer a chunk of the balance, yet keep the account open with small monthly payments to avoid that 300 bucks. At first I was under the impression that I was paying interest on that 7500.00.
Thanks for the help guys.

BTW, I also have to pay my home owners insurance and property taxes into escrow,,,,Does anyone know how to drop the escrow account and pay them yourself? After discovering some of these high -yield online savings accounts, that seems like a better place for the money to sit rather than in an escrow account.

I would be surprised if paying off it off entirely actually closed the account. I have zero balance with my HELOC, and it remains open. I'd suggest calling the bank and asking them to make sure (and write down who you talked to, in case they tell you wrong, which happens sometimes).

Another reason not to close it is that HELOCs look like lines of credit I believe, and if you closed it your debt to credit ratio would be affected, potentially dinging your credit score.

We have that same loan with Countrywide....

Transfer most of the balance to the cc....

DO NOT CLOSE OUT THE ACCCOUNT!

The 300 fee is gone as long as that account stays open for three years.

Have you had it three years yet? (your terms may vary)

I ve only had this account since OCT 2005. It was my understanding that if I kept the account open after paying off the balance, then I would still have monthly interest only payments....Am I wrong about this?

What would happen if you paid it down to like $500

Could you make like $10 payments???

(to avoid the $300 fee)

Interest-only payments on a $0 balance are $0 per month.

Don't pay $300 for no reason.

Searching for Credit Card with Balance Transfer Offer for Home Equity

Post subject: Searching for Credit Card with Balance Transfer Offer for Home Equity
Posted: Fri Apr 07, 2006 5:31 pm

I have a home eguity line of credit with Countrywide loans. My balance is right around 3,000. With this being an adjustable rate, and with rates going up, Id love to get rid of some of this interest.

I know I can feasibly and comfortably pay off this balance in less than a year, so is there a card out there that would allow me to transfer my home equity balance to an introductory 0% rate?

Any help or comments appreciated, God Bless!

Thanks for the advice.

I wasn't sure if i could transfer a home equity line, but after reading a great deal of this forum, I see you can transfer dang near anything.

Countrywide says that Ill have to pay 300 dollars early termination fee for closing my account early. However, upon doing the math, 300 is very small considering the interest I would pay throughout the life of the account.

This forum is a great tool for making credit work for you,,,thanks again!!!

Don't close the account. You say it's a HELOC with a balance of $3,000--so pay off the balance and leave the account open.

Why would you want to pay $300 to close the account?

Look at the fine print

One or two purchases required every month

It could be like $1.00 or even $0.32 but 100% of these purchases will accrue interest
(NOT AT 0.00%--more like 16%--21%)

100% guarantee you will have a MINIMUM FINANCE CHARGE like $1.00 or $2.00

Not saying it won't work for YOU

I'm not gonna' do it

0.99% or 1.99% (NO FEE) for life would be better for me

But they think 7.99% + $50.00 fee is good for me

SURE IT IS...

NOT!!!!!!

It is at $0.00 and has been for a while

I have seen 2 variations....one where you have to put a min. of 50 bucks on it a month..which I would pass on. The 2 purchases for 1 buck a pop probably is ok if you can keep track and have a large enough credit limit to make it worth your time.

Was this a new card offer or on an existing card?

Let me ask you this,

If I barrow 5000/- and did a $1 per month purchase, how will this work?

search for this offer on fat wallet, they have all kinds of discussion and I think mouse pretty much explained it.....your purchases (the 1 or 2 bucks) will be charged at the purchase rate...and at first you will be charged the min. finance charge. The 1 buck and the interest charges will compound and each month you will add another buck. Your min. payment will be applied to the bt 0% balance first.

American Express Credit Card for Small Businesses

Guest: tonyb
Post subject: American Express Credit Card for Small Businesses

I don't know if they require it, but if they don't require it I doubt it would help. Business cards like that for small (and even medium) businesses are always tied to an individual's credit (at least I don't know of any cases were it's not). I had this in another post, but since corporations can act as a shield against assets, a credit card issuer knows that if you run up a bunch of debt, most small businesses have little or no assets to go after, so they issue credit based on the individual, as well as putting the individual on the hook for the balance if the corp fails to pay.

The 2% and 1.5% cash back options have been taken offline, but are still available by phone. Not going away just yet but it's risky if you can't spend $50,000 quickly enough.

Why not try the strategy I suggested for the Fidelity 529 card? Seems to be a safer bet to me.

So I'm guessing you think that 50k deal may be going away soon??
I'm already using a fidelity mbna card that gets me 1.5% but since I run about 200k of business expense through my personal credit cards I need something else. I saw the 529 deal you mentioned. Do you think MBNA will let me have another high limit fidelity card? My Fico is around 750.
thanks

I talked to representatives, they simply removed the 35,000 and 50,000 point rewards off the website to show customers they could no longer redeem those rewards online. You must call to redeem these rewards. I didn't get that HSBC 2% card either, which is related to a Best Buy promo (Mystery card), no guarantee on what card you will receive, and I didn't receive that HSBC card I mentioned. Bummer. Anyway, any other 2% cards than the 3 I mentioned?

2% Cash Back Credit Cards Currently Available

Guest: quiznut1
Post subject: 2% Cash Back Credit Cards Currently Available
Posted: Tue Mar 28, 2006 12:55 am

Hi everyone,
I want to start this thread completely devoted to the 2% cash back cards, as I know they are hard to come by. I will not include cards that give you an extra .5% cash back (resulting in 2%) for revolving a balance to the next month. I will also not list cards that have an annual fee. Here are the ones I am aware of, and feel free to add any more if I miss any.

Bank of America Power Rewards Platinum Visa
- 2% cash back when you redeem 50,000 points for $1,000 statement credit
- 1 point per dollar spent
- Points expire after 5 years, no limit to amount of points you can earn in a single year

Fidelity 529 College Rewards Mastercard
- 2% cash back on all purchases
- Once you accrue $25 in cash back, redeem points for a deposit into
your 529 plan
- Limit $1,500 cash back per year
NOTE: No annual 529 account maintenance fee if auto deposit of $50 monthly or $150 quarterly is made. Also, you may withdraw any or all of your $50 monthly or $150 quarterly principal at any time without penalty, tax free (as long as your account doesn't reach $0 - automatic closure in that case).

HSBC True 2% Cash Back Gold Mastercard
- 2% cash back on all purchases
- Limit $400 cash back per year
- Seems to target invites only, but this thread on fatwallet indicates you may be able to get the card by applying in a Best Buy store (for a store credit card initially, then you get a "mystery" HSBC card). It depends on what you qualify for.

This thread is a great idea for newcomers, quiznut1!

Reading the details of the 529 card, I just realized how to make the card work for the rest of us who have no future plans to go to a college AND have no child to build this fund for. As you said, withdrawals of principal are not subject to penalty at all (note that earnings on non-qualified college expense will be subject to federal income taxes at the distributee's rate, as well as a 10% federal penalty tax). That means, we can make auto deposit of $50 every month AND withdraw $50 every month, just to avoid the fees, right? If there are contributions from the 2% cash back from the 529 card, we can withdraw that money too, since those contributions become the new pricipal as well.

Anyone sees anything that can possibly go wrong with this idea?

Reference my quote above from my first post. Your 529 cannot reach $0 in total balance or your account will be closed. When the auto $50 monthly deposit is set in place, you could withdraw $49 each month and leave $1 in there. What I would do is set up the plan, then apply for and get the 2% credit card, use the 2% card till you reach the $25 minimum cash back to deposit into the plan, and then cash out the whole principal as well as your $25 cash back. Your money you invested in the plan should have earned a little bit by then, so you can cash out and leave your earnings.

Any other 2% cash back cards besides the ones I referenced, or other questions about the Fidelity 529 card?

Haha, yup yup, well said. I saw the >$0 restriction but just didn't include the note in my post.

Forget about the Power Rewards whose 2% requirement is hard to achieve and wastes your interest earnings during the lengthy accumulation, and forget about the HSBC/Household card that is not only hard to get but also usually comes with a low credit line. I think with the approach above the 529 card should be THE card to get for EVERYONE, particularly those who are looking for a "my wallet is only big enough for one card" solution.

EDIT: For that matter, forget about the Blue Cash as well wahaha.

The credit card companies must be getting desperate. I received two offers last week that offered a cash reward. One from Citibank with 0% APR and $100 gift card, another from AMEX with $50 gift card. Has anybody taken them up on an offer like that?
