Should I close my credit card account?

Post subject: Should I close my credit card account?
Posted: Thu Feb 23, 2006 1:05 pm

Last month i requested a credit line increase to my Amex Platinum credit card (an annual fee cc available in PR) , and the representative said that may take a hard inquiry and i said no thanks , but apparently the process kept active and i received today a letter saying that for the CLI , i have to show evidence of my income.

Since i'm no interest to receive a credit limit increase . What can i do?

- Call them back to cancel the process?
- No answering the letter and passing the time.
- Since it has an annual fee ($45) , its preferible to close the account?
Thank you.

BTW , since i'm living in PR , i don't qualify for US Amex credit cards.

If you ignore the letter, your request will be cancelled automatically. Or you can just call and cancel it directly. Doesn't matter.

As you know, I often recommend not closing any account UNLESS there's a fee for the account. If you don't feel the card is worth $45 to you, call AmEx and say just that--and ask to speak with the retention department. Often it will try to make some deal to keep the account open--waive the fee, lower the rate, give you a CLI, offer you a good BT deal. Doesn't hurt to ask for one or more o these when speaking to retention! (Or, sometmes, the CSR will just close your account.)

Let us know how it goes!

Alexis, did you cancel your Harley Davidson card yet or did U.S. Bank talk you out of it?

I talked with a representative from US Bank and i decide to reopen the account. Regarding Amex , i found that PR(along with USVI) customers are treated as foreigners instead of part of the USA.

May I ask what limit you requested? I have been trying to get my AE limit up, but I don't want to go to high and get a financial review.

I asked a CLI of $2.5k and my current credit limit is $5k. If approved it would be increasing to $7.5k

Perhaps is the Amex policy. Puerto Rico belongs to Amex Latinamerica instead of Amex USA.

$100 Rebate Offer from CitiBank Simplicity Credit Card

There's always good deals on Fatwallet.com but this was just to good to not share!

http://www.fatwallet.com/t/52/573247/

Opening a Citibank checking acct gets you $100

Linking it to a Citibank credit card and paying the CC bill from there gets you another $100

Applying for Citibank's Simplicity card gets you $100 w/special code (so you can apply for this first and then link it to your new checking acct).

See linked topic for details!

PS: The biggest turn off I imagine would be a 90 & 120 day delay before you can get the money. But that's not so long, IMO!

I think it is a new thing. The Diamond card I just got has the one year limit but I found an old offer for the same card that I received about a year and a half ago and it had the 5 points all the time.

The Citicard Platinum Select card has a $300.00 yearly - not one year - limit on rebates. If you reach $300.00 in rebates in any one calendar year you'll earn nothing further until the next year when you have another $300.00 to play with.

Are there any circumstances where Citibank will extend the 5 points for supermarkets / drugstores / gas stations and 1 point for everything else past the first 12 months ? I would get the card if it was permanent.

Signature, why must the offer be permanent to interest you? Get the card, enjoy it while you can--there's no fee for it. When the offer expires, you can ask for it to be extended, throw it away, keep it for a better offer...and apply for other similar cards. All terms on these cards can change at any time. And there will always be special offers of one kind or another.

The same card advertised on our site does go beyond 12 months. In fact, I have never heard of this card offering the reward point structure you desribe for only a year.

Citi Diamond Rewards Credit Card with 0% Balance Transfer Offer

Guest: JoyJoy
Post subject: Citi Diamond Rewards Credit Card with 0% Balance Transfer Offer

I need some information regarding this reward card. Now this card offers "0% APR on balance transfers until 3/1/2007 as long as your first balance transfer posts to your account within 3 months of becoming a cardmember. Plus, you'll receive 3 bonus months at your 0% APR until 6/01/07 if your first balance transfer and $100.00 in purchases post to your account and are not returned within 3 months of becoming a cardmember." ($100.00 gift card with 10,000 bonus thank-you points after your first purchase).

Suze Orman supposedly said on her show that if one balance transfers on a card NOT to also use it for purchases also until you pay off the balance transfer in full. Would this be an incidence where that would not apply? I am being asked this and I haven't the faintest idea what the answer is but said I could get an answer from this board. Thank you in advance!

If you have 0% on purchases for the length of the Balance Transfer offer you are fine. Where the problem comes in is if you do a BT at 0% for 12 months and then a $100 purchase at 12% any payments you make would be credited to the lower 0% balance first. So you would be accruing interest on the purchase balance over the 12 months. Not a lot of money at $100 but it can get people in trouble.

In your case, if you have to make a $100 purchase in the first 3 months make the purchase in the first month, pay it in full, and then do the BT with $0 balance on the account. And then you don't have to worry about the interest.

Thanks for your expedient reply. You're right on target as the 0% APR is only on BT and not on purchases and cash advances, until 3/01/07.

Purchase will be made and PIF just like you advised and then BT. Again thanks for the education. It's easy to misread these offers and end up in trouble like you said.

Is what true, exactly? It's a long article. Much of it makes sense to me. Some does not. For example,
Quote:
Think twice before taking offers
Anyone carrying a lot of credit card debt should probably rebuff offers for credit line increases.

Why agree to a bigger credit line when your current card debt is already draining your bank account? Your top priority should be paying down your current debt.
The assumption is that if you have a bigger credit line, you'll use it and owe more money. But you can use a larger line to make money, not spend money. You can use it to increase your credit scores, and thus lower your interest rates if you are forced to carry a balance. There's no need to think that a bigger line means more uncontrolled spending. It could happen that way, but assuming that everyone is going to misuse credit is silly, insulting, and fairly dumb. With that logic, you should pay off all your cards, close all your accounts, and never use credit again.

Clearly, people who don't have the discipline to keep their spending in check face greater risks when they have larger credit lines. Those MSN articles seem to state the obvious sometimes, but I suppose that's good since it may not be obvious to a lot of folks.

That does seem silly! So they know you're a responsible customer who doesn't make them any money, but still they're happy to raise your rates patiently waiting for that one slip-up! Keep an eye on those and if you do get into trouble in the future, be sure to use one with lower rates or one of your promotional cards. Good luck! (as if you need it... haha ).

PAY IN FULL and don't use the card for a while

They probably saw something on your credit report they didn't like

Just use it every 6 months for like one tank of gas and PIF and don't use it again for 6 months

Or just call them on the phone and GET THE FULL STORY

I had one card "JACK" my rate (FOR EXTRA "REVENUE") and I got them to back tract to 1% under what it was

I just got a preapproved offer for a Providian Platinum card, with fine print saying "This account may not be available to you if you already have a credit account with us or have applied in the last 90 days."

I already have a Paypal Visa through Providian with a $500 credit limit. It was opened last September, run up to its max, and then paid off. Current balance zero.

So....the question is: How likely is Providian to actually give a second card? Is the language in their offer a strict policy, or just "we reserve the right to...." sort of boilerplate?

Thanks. I applied online; results are supposed to arrive in a week or two.

I'm guessing that Providian already knew that I had an account with them, since the pre-filled application page had my post office box address (which is my billing address for the Providian card), and didn't ask for a physical address (whic they would be required to do if I wasn't already a customer). I could be wrong, of course.

For other points of reference, Capital One loves to issue multiple cards (I have 4, plus a business card), while Orchard Bank/HSBC's web site says a customer can have only one card.

I'll keep you updated.

My daughter (19) got a secured Credit Union Mastercard $500 limit had it for little less than a year. She then applied for the Citi Platinum Select card (not the student card) and got it with a 2000 CL. She bought a expensive stereo system with 0% on purchases for a year deal, used only half of her available CL and is paying $10 more a month on her account than Citi asks for. By doing this she showing self control by not using her entire CL and it show she's paying more than the minimum monthly payment. This looks good on her credit report and will help when applying for future credit.

They gave me a 6 month 0% APR on purchases and balance transfers, but if you pay your bills in full and on time, I think this is the best student credit card available right now.

Once again, I will rehash my point. I don't think you'll have any problem getting approved by Citi, as they really want to get their student cards into student's hands. I think the only requirement for this card is that you're a student, and the cash back rebate structure is the same on this card as the adult card. (5%, 1%). If you're going to pay your bills off in full and on time, I think this is the best card you can get. Remember, it's good to have the attitude that says, "Hey, do you want to have my loyalty? Then feel free to give me something back." It's a good thing.

Best Credit Cards for Students (cont'd.)

hi, this is my first post so i'm sorry if this is the wrong place to put it.: I was wondering if there was a student credit card that will definately approve you even if you have zero credit history. I don't even have a report yet, and I wanted to know the easiest card to get.

Thanks,
steve

I don't want to say too much, because there's really no such thing as a guarantee. However, my one of my sister who is in college now, just applied for a First Premier Bank credit card (firstpremier.com). Seems to me that a lot of people I know have those. So, it seems like an easy card to get. Not sure about how good the terms are though. From what I know, for my sister's card, it's 250 to start with 0%APR. However, if you have more limit and use more than 250 credit, then the apr kicks in. Make sure you check the site so you know that it is right for you. Different cards suit different people.

David,

If you've only had 6 months of credit history, you will probably have a hard time getting a decent non-student card. So, I would definitely consider getting another student card before you graduate...if you find one you're interested in.

While it's true that most student cards suffer from worse APRs and less credit limits than their non-student counterparts, there is ONE card you should definitely try to get before you graduate--the Citi mtvU card, simply because not only does it offer great and unique rewards but there is NO non-student counterpart for this card. Short credit history is not a problem in getting this card as Citibank seems to deny people only if they have any bad records in their credit history, which seems to be not the case for you. Just give it a try already.

David,

I've had my Bank of America Platinum Student Visa (formerly known as Fleet Fusion before BoA took over Fleet) since June of 2004. Just this morning, I called to have my student card converted to a Platinum Power Rewards. At the same time, had my credit limit raised from a measely $500 to a more usable $3000 (all this without a hard pull on my credit report!).

So, what I'm trying to say is that student cards aren't so bad. Even with a high APR and low limit, you can use that to your advantage by paying off every month for a year or so. When you're ready, convert it to a regular card like mine and everything's fine.

why did you have such a low CL?I have had the same card since Sept. and I started off with a $900, which I think is really good when I hear friends of mine start off at like $300. I always thought BofA gave an automatic CL increase after the first 9 months.

Does anyone else know anything about the Citi MTVu card?

I was wondering if it is wise to apply for another student CC, after I already have one with Bank of America, and the fact that I will be graduating in May. Should I wait until May, when I have a real job, and then apply for a CC that is not marketed towards college students. If getting another student CC is alright, which ones should I look at

David,

In my experience, student cards are only different in two ways: they might have a lower credit limit and they might have a higher APR than the regular card.

If you have a short credit history and you think your score is not very high, you might want to consider getting a credit card now, since getting a student one is generally easier (lower criteria required for approval) than getting one of the regular ones. Once the initial offer period on the new card is over, you could also think about consolidating (if it is from the same bank).

But if you have a somewhat long credit history, and you think your scores are good, waiting to get a 'real' job would be advisable, so that you could state a higher income than you have now.

Some good student credit cards might be: Citi Dividend, AmEx Blue, AmEx Green (if you care for paying an annual fee), Bank of America, Chase (the student versions of all the above cards).

Hope this helps.

David,

Greetings and thanks for the post! How long have you had the BofA card? Do you have any idea what your credit score is? You can comparison shop for student cards here:

I have the Citi Dividend Platinum Select credit card for college students. It has the same rebate structure as the one they target to adults. 5% cash back on gas stations, grocery stores, and drug stores, and 1% cash back on everything else. Limit $300 yearly rebate limit per calendar year. I had no problem getting approved, even though I only had a 6 month credit history. They gave me a 6 month 0% APR on purchases and balance transfers, but if you pay your bills in full and on time, I think this is the best student credit card available right now.

Ive had the BofA card for 6 months, don't know what my credit score is but I would assume very good, but I will check to make sure.

I don't know if paying for car insurance or a cellphone bill counts towards credit, if not I have a very short credit history.

Having pulled myself out of a credit hole I amassed in the late 90's, I thoroughly enjoyed reading your site. There is one large omission, however, that I believe bears covering.

Several articles talk about late fees, changing due dates, etc. but none have mentioned that most credit card issuers allow you to pay directly through their web site, often crediting the payment the same business day.

Every payday, my budgeted credit card payment gets sent electronically. By making weekly payments, I ensure that I never miss a due date while lowering my average daily balance.

Keep up the good work on the site...

All mine allow ON-LINE payments (most post in 24-48 hours)

I can even PRE-SCHEDULE them days or weeks or months in advance

Only one that won't let me do that is PENFED VISA CREDIT UNION

This topic has been dicussed ad nausium on this forum.

Some people like to go to the web site of each and every creditor to schedule payments and some (me!) like to do one stop shopping and pay everything at the same time directly from their checking account. The cost is the same either way - nothing! Neither is there any difference in flexibility. Payments can be scheduled days, weeks, or months in advance either way. It's whatever suits your fancy.

With reasonable assertion, I think that most board members already know they can pay online and make multiple payments within their billing cycles so the topic is mundane.

Not every card issuer uses the 'average daily balance' method for computing interest. Some use the two-cycle average daily balance like Providian. Not only that, there are different grace periods as well.

Also, there are a large percentage of consumers out there that don't carry a balance whereas others take advantage of 0% APR offers and don’t even concern themselves with the very things you mentioned.

I can check the balance and confirm charges and credits (ON MY CREDIT CARD WEB SITE) and make sure everything is ok with the account in one stop
(AND SCHEDULE FUTURE PAYMENTS AT THE SAME TIME)

I CAN'T SEE ANYTHING FROM MY CHECKING ACCOUNT

Anbody else notice all the Discover ads lately on TV? Some even offering you 20 bucks for calling and signing up in the next 20 minutes. Are people leaving them in droves?

They sent me a by mail solicitation about a month ago and then even called me on the phone about 2 weeks ago asking if I wanted to apply. Told the rep I had their offer and was thinking it over - told her I'd take them up on it right now for one of their 0% lifetime balance transfer offers. She said no, so I said no thanks!

This weekend I finally get myself to the mini apporama I've been working towards and decide to cold app on their web site. Got the thanks for applying email and we'll back to you within 30 days. So guess what comes in the mail today? Yet another solicitation; this time with 0% till June 07 and credit line to 25k. Applying on the web only or throught this site gets you 0% to April 07. Guess I should have waited a couple of days

Oh well, I'm determined to get this 0% BT for life one way or another...

One more Q, for anyone who has multiple Chase rewards cards, did you hae to register each? Or did they appear automatically on your rewards acct? Also did all the points contribute towards a total you could then redeem? I got $50 worth of points from a new signup and I have over 2000 points on my first card but I can't see the points from the new one. Please let me know if anyone has experience with this. Else I'll take the time later today to call customer service, but I hope not to...lol.

Yes, if you have multiple Chase cards you need to sign up each one separately, using a different username/password combination for each. Yes, it is an inconvenience.

Very convenient for Chase is what it is! Seeing as points from multiple accounts do not add together, you have to use 'em or lose 'em!

This turned out to be like $100 in my pocket because I usually have my student loan payment taken out of my bank account automatically. I instructed them on the check Citibank sent me to not advance my due date (and post the entire amt to my principal) but they chose to, anyway. Meaning they didn't have to take the money out of my bank account this month. Kinda like delayed gratification and I'm able to use the cash I didn't spend on student loan payments for whatever I want, if that makes sense.

2.625%

My total loan amt is just under 20 grand. Jeorpadizing this rate for a lump sum I cannot pay back right away is not really in my scope right now Maybe if I get more savings, I'll consider it.

Given savings account rates are higher than your student loan you are better off NOT paying off the loan but saving the money. See the balance transfer thread.

Did not know! Thank you. I'm usually into Bath and Body works but I just bought enough stuff to last a lifetime during their holiday sale. I think I will go for Target's instead, even though I'm typically a Walmart person. Should help me out with at least one month of groceries

Oh, Goodie! I found something even better: I can apply my points towards my student loans. At least this way ensures that I get all the money once and for all! I rarely, if ever, spend all of the money on any gift cards I've had in the past. Talk about a cash cow for the companies!!

Applying your card reward point to pay down debt- Great idea! That's what I call a savvy consumer.

I redeem my points for Shell Gas Cards. That's the most useful way I've found to use them, so far. (I don't have student loans.)

Why, thank you, Gentlemen I called them today and they said to allow 4 to 6 weeks for the payment to post. This is almost better than even cash back (a check) because the money gets applied to a non-frivolous cause right away.

I just don't remember the terms for this card and can't find them, either.

I've been approved since 11/16/05 but only did make my first purchase last week. They're supposed to credit you $100 in your rewards column after your first purchase. What I don't remember is if this first purchase had a time limit, like 30 days or something? My next statement will be in about two weeks so if anyone knows, please enlighten me.
