Searching for Information on One from American Express

Guest: rapjunkie Posted: Fri Feb 24, 2006 4:06 am I don't have the card, but I've read that there's an annual fee (waived the first year). With the savings account being 1%, it just doesn't seem worth it when there are cash back cards available and you could always deposit that cash into a high yield savings account. If AMEX at least did away with the annual fee entirely, it would sound like a cool idea for people that wanted some savings being established that they don't even want to have to think about. Guest: ore83 Posted: Fri Feb 24, 2006 6:41 pm The annual fee after the first year certainly sucks, but you can also put your OWN money into this acct, which has a higher rate than my regular savings acct could ever offer. I think that's what won me over... Still the 'no pre-set spending limit' sparks my curiousity. Guest: shooter Credit Expert (100+ Posts) Posted: Fri Feb 24, 2006 8:44 pm I was interested in this card and almost applied for it. Luckily I found out about emigrant Direct's money market account which is now paying 4.25%. That is higher than the Amex savings account and I can put my own money into it. Plus I can take the cash back rewards from my other cards which give me more than 1% and put those into that account. There are better options out there which don't require an annual fee. Can't comment on the no pre-set limit as I don't have any Amex charge cards. Mouse, the whole exposure limit thing sounds worthless, almost think I'd rather just have a credit limit. I asked the rep with AMEX if it had a limit or if they just called it a no limit card... and he said "no, it really has no limit"... I read on here that people have actually gotten them to tell them their exposure limits... Guest: ore83 Posted: Sun Feb 26, 2006 12:22 pm Okay, so I'm just starting the process for Emigrant Direct... Sounds like it'll take a few days to open since they want to 'test' my bank account to ensure it's mine by depositing and withdrawing some change and have me confirm the amounts. I like the fact that it's a savings acct with a decent amount of interest with NO min deposit. Now is it strictly an online account or will an ATM card or similar come with the acct? Also, with my One from AMEX acct, it has no pre-set limit but rather an 'exposure limit'. Usually those are only on 'charge' cards where you must pay the bal. in full every month, but mine also has the option to pay it like a regular 'credit' card... As in whatever I can and that it doesn't have to be in full. So is it like a 'charge' card with the flexability of a 'credit' card? The more I read on it the most I get confused... CardRatings.com is the most comprehensive source for comparing credit card offers.   Please visit CardRatings.com to view the best rated credit cards! Guest: Tek Posted: Mon Feb 27, 2006 8:54 am The American Express One Card is a charge card. However, they will let you carry a balance if you need to. In that case, they will charge you interest like any other credit card. They do this on other charge cards under the name "Sign & Travel" and "Extended Payments". Under those programs you have to be over $200 on a purchase or any travel purchase of any amount. The One card will let you extend any purchase. The NO-PRE SET Spending limit isn't that big of a deal. I doubt you will ever reach it because it is based off your income. If you reach it then you might question if your spending more then you make. As far as the $35 annual fee is concerned. If you make use of the all the cars protection features and American Express Selects offers, the $35 will be covered and then some by all the savings. I have always told people who are upset about the annual fees on AMEX cards that if they use the card for everything and take advantage of its features it will pay for itself and then some. My Gold Card has a $90 annual fee. By the end of the year I have usually benefited from $300 worth of goodies, protection, discounts, or membership rewards. Hope this helped. Unless you are a big spender the 1% doesnt add up to much. I do like the fact that i can withdraw money without an early withdrawal penalty. I'm sure i will charge at least 3500 a year so the annual fee will pay for itself with the initial 1% back. Credit Card Offer Addiction?
Guest: Chazmanian Post subject: Credit Card Offer Addiction?Posted: Fri Feb 24, 2006 1:40 am Is there such a thing as Credit card addiction? I find myself fighting the urges to apply madly for every card I can get...I love waiting for that Derned envelope to come in the mailbox! I race home from work the day after I've applied hoping for that nice thick envelope with that nice hard unbendable section....Jeeze that was bad. I love setting up online pay! I love the Thank you point network! I'll spend 50 bucks at Wal-mart on my card even though I have the cash in my wallet....Just so I can send in a payment? I want a wallet chock full o' cards to make me feel strong? and I'm a big guy with a rough and tumble job as I manage a large outbound callcenter and have the misfortune of having to mistreat my drugged up unsavory outbound telemarketing crew?......But I feel addicted, I love the joy of an approval! I really like the envelope and will open it very slowly like Charlie opening his candy bar in the Wonka book. I'll read over every little detail and find dumb excuses to call the customer service number? Waiting on the Ciscover card is really exciting and for some wierd reason I hope it takes a long time so I can rush home every day to open my mailbox and feel around for my "Golden Ticket".... In the past 2 months I have gotten: Citi-simplicity $2600 limit. Nice card 0% on everything til next year. Citi-Premier pass $6000 base limit but can go over so long as I pay the overage the next month...they call that no preset limit? BOA platinum $4600 limit 0% BT's....Waiting for it in the mail and was approved instantly online.(Comes with some little mini-card that sposed to go on your keychain?) I lose my keys everyday...I cannot imagine losing my keys and a credit card daily.... Providian Pay-Pal Visa $1000 limit???? still cannot wait to get it in the derned mailbox and open er' up slow and easy! Waiting on the discover folks. And loving it. so much in fact that I have called them every day for the past 4 days. Am I ill? Are there others like me? Guest: stevejk Posted: Fri Feb 24, 2006 10:35 am Chazmanian, you and mouse may have credit card addiction. I probably have a touch of credit card addiction as well. I keep my eye out for better CC offers -- better rewards, preferably cash back. I probably have more CC than I should have, but I don't carry them all with me. I think I have only three on me now -- my primary card, a backup card if the fraud prevention algorithm of the former denies a transaction, and a card with better rewards at restaurants. I only carry enough cash for small transactions. I do get a special tingle when I see the statement arrive in the mail. Hot dog! I say, have an opportunity to reconcile my statement with Quicken. Requesting too many CC in a period of time can lower your FICO score and put you at risk of being denied credit or a loan, or having your insurance premiums skyrocket (if your state allows insurance companies use FICO scores to set premiums). Then again, I do try to resist buying things for the sake of charging them. I endeavor to treat CC as if they were cash. For me, the CC is just a way to buy things I need w/o needing to carry a wad of greenbacks with me. As mouse would point out, CC has features that cash doesn't, but those are just a bonus for me. Guest: shooter Credit Expert (100+ Posts) Posted: Fri Feb 24, 2006 5:22 pm I found this quite funny. My wife and I decided a few months ago that I am a credit card addict. I thought I was alone in the world until I found this board last October. I proudly announced to her that night that I am not alone in the world. She thought that was hilarious and always laughs when i tell her I'm checking in with my "friends." I get the same rush from approvals and from the envelope in the mail. I would apply for a lot more but I really don't need them and I don't want too many inquiries a year. A couple of months ago I got an offer for the Citi Diamond Preferred card and it was such a great offer I applied that night even though I had absolutely no need for it (I had to promise not to apply for any more cards for a year since it was my second card in four months). I used it a couple of times to get my 10,000 bonus points and now it sits in my wallet simply because it looks so dang cool. I am doing a BT with my Dividend card right now and I have the money in savings. When the year at 0% is up on that I'll pay it off, reallocate most of the limit to my Diamond card (which had a horrible initial limit) and do another BT for another year at 0%. I love it. I admit I'm wierd but I'm making money and it is fun so I don't really care. You'll put it aside, even throw it away--but then you'll be fishing through your trash for the code and Web site and will soon be clicking away feeling the rush through your veins once more. You're not going to stop until you hit bottom, fall into a ditch because of the weight of your wallet, find yourself buying things just to get the cash rebates. Credit Card with Best Balance Transfer Offer
Guest: ore83 Post subject: Credit Card with Best Balance Transfer OfferPosted: Fri Feb 03, 2006 12:29 am Hey every one, I've been lurking in the shadows for a while now but I had a couple questions and finally worked up the courage to post. I'll give you my info then the question... Credit scores: 683, 687, 692 3 credit cards, Lowe's, and 2 BofA's, limits $1k, $4k, $3.5K The only one with a balance is the $4k limit one that I had to do an emergency cash advance on ($1k), now the balance sits around $2.5k and I'm worried that the balance might be high considering the limit. I don't want to pay the cash advance rate so I was considering a BT on a new card. Problem is my friend did that and the card issuer only gave them a little more than the BT as the credit limit and made it look nearly tapped out... Any suggestions on good card issuers regarding BTs and credit lines? I'm 18 and don't want to screw anything up this early on so anything will help! Guest: beyond platinum Credit Expert (100+ Posts) Posted: Fri Feb 03, 2006 1:33 am I'm glad you used the word "emergency" to rationalize taking out a cash advance on your card because that is one of the worst mistakes to make. When you apply for a new credit card, one thing creditors are going to look at are your current credit limits and then decide how much to give you. You already have a utilization of 63% and I imagine that your payments are going to the lowest APR instead of the cash advance APR first (19-25%??) right? It is very uncertain how much of credit limit you will get if you apply for new credit card so you run the risk of increasing your utilization ratio but think about the money your going to save on interest charges if you transfer that amount to a 0% intro card. I would suggest Chase Visa or American Express Blue because they have long intro rates and easier approval. https://www201.americanexpress.com/cards/Applyfservlet?csi=38/9341/b/57/0334763299/033232134386/0/n http://www.chase.com/ccp/index.jsp?pg_name=ccpmapp/card_acquisitions/unsolicited/page/PFSCreditCardDetails&sourcecode=4W65 _________________ "The most incomprehensible thing about the world is that it is comprehensible." --Einstein Last edited by beyond platinum on Mon Feb 06, 2006 11:56 am; edited 1 time in total CardRatings.com is the most comprehensive source for comparing credit card offers.   Please visit CardRatings.com to view the best rated credit cards! The lady (who was very nice, I wonder if ALL amex people are?) said she'd do a BT of $2k and said when my card comes in and I call to activate it, go ahead and ask for a CLI as well, that way I can either get my other $500 on it or at least not have a 'maxed' out card. Either way their 3.99% for the life of the balance sure beats whatever my cash advance rate was on my other card. Thanks for the advice... I hear a lot of people saying they offer amounts or tell you what you're 'eligible' for but I've always had to pick a number and hope it wasn't asking for too much. I think now that I'm online with AMEX after my statement I'll try doing an increase again... Did you pick an amount or did it offer an amount? Still awaiting my One from AMEX .... Providian Platinum Credit Card Offer
Guest: traveler505 Post subject: Providian Platinum Credit Card OfferPosted: Mon Feb 27, 2006 9:54 pm I just got a preapproved offer for a Providian Platinum card, with fine print saying "This account may not be available to you if you already have a credit account with us or have applied in the last 90 days." I already have a Paypal Visa through Providian with a $500 credit limit. It was opened last September, run up to its max, and then paid off. Current balance zero. So....the question is: How likely is Providian to actually give a second card? Is the language in their offer a strict policy, or just "we reserve the right to...." sort of boilerplate? Cash Back Rewards Total for 2005
Guest: quiznut1 Post subject: Cash Back Rewards Total for 2005Posted: Sat Feb 25, 2006 1:45 pm Well, I have held cash back cards officially now for 1 year (February 2005-February 2006), and the year was a grand one indeed. My total cash back from my 3 credit cards totaled $554.56. Finance charges, Late Fees, Over the limit fees, Annual Fees, and other fees paid in this year: $0. Here is a breakdown: Citi Dividend Platinum Select Card: $384.56 (this includes $5 for signing up for paperless statements) Chase Cash Plus Rewards Card: $150 (I got $100 bonus for signing up) Discover Restaurant Card: $20 (although I am 13 cents away from redeeming another $20). So, $384.56 + $150.00 + $ 20.00 = $554.56 Not bad for a year's "work," huh? Guest: shooter Credit Expert (100+ Posts) Posted: Sat Feb 25, 2006 5:55 pm Isn't it great. This year was great for me as well. I had a cash back card in 2004 but it capped out at one percent. Then I discovered the Dividend and Cash plus cards. In 2004 I only made $109 and last year I made $410 with my new cards. I love it! Guest: diddlydudette Credit Expert (100+ Posts) Posted: Sat Feb 25, 2006 7:21 pm Congrats guys. Don't you just love this free money? I just received my first Chase Cash Plus card check. It was so nice to go out to mailbox and get a check for 150.00 and I didn't have to do anything for it but put things on my credit card and pay off each month. I made the 150.00 in less than 5 months. I used to hate using credit cards and never did for like 8 years but then realized that you need to use one every now and then to keep credit report up to snuff. So I choose to use a cash back card and I'm not only improving my pocketbook but credit score....love them. Care to share what you're doing? My mother has 2 nephews that are international students. They attended a community college and homestayed at our house in 2005. Each boy's tuition fee is around $3,500/semester. So counting the whole yr, the total is $10,500 (as one of the boys transferred in mid-2005)... most of that amount got charged on my credit card. These boys cell phone bills totaled over $1500 last yr. Their plane tickets were about $4000. All that a few other things got charged on my credit cards. My mother also buys stuff for resale. She used to use her chase double double platinum when they gave her 2 points per dollar spent. But after chase reduced the rewards to 1point/$1 spent in July last yr, she started using my Household Bank Gold for 2% cash back on purchases. Family car insurance, cell phone bills, groceries and gas are things that add up quickly for my rewards. _________________ I hate it when I buy something and find out that the price is going for less soon afterwards CardRatings.com is the most comprehensive source for comparing credit card offers.   Please visit CardRatings.com to view the best rated credit cards!

Citi Diamond Preferred Rewards Credit Card
Guest: JoyJoy Post Subject: Citi Diamond Preferred Rewards Credit CardPosted: Mon Feb 27, 2006 6:38 pm I need some information regarding this reward card. Now this card offers "0% APR on balance transfers until 3/1/2007 as long as your first balance transfer posts to your account within 3 months of becoming a cardmember. Plus, you'll receive 3 bonus months at your 0% APR until 6/01/07 if your first balance transfer and $100.00 in purchases post to your account and are not returned within 3 months of becoming a cardmember." ($100.00 gift card with 10,000 bonus thank-you points after your first purchase). Suze Orman supposedly said on her show that if one balance transfers on a card NOT to also use it for purchases also until you pay off the balance transfer in full. Would this be an incidence where that would not apply? I am being asked this and I haven't the faintest idea what the answer is but said I could get an answer from this board. Guest: tonygoldston Posted: Mon Feb 27, 2006 7:05 pm If you have 0% on purchases for the length of the Balance Transfer offer you are fine. Where the problem comes in is if you do a BT at 0% for 12 months and then a $100 purchase at 12% any payments you make would be credited to the lower 0% balance first. So you would be accruing interest on the purchase balance over the 12 months. Not a lot of money at $100 but it can get people in trouble. In your case, if you have to make a $100 purchase in the first 3 months make the purchase in the first month, pay it in full, and then do the BT with $0 balance on the account. You're right on target as the 0% APR is only on BT and not on purchases and cash advances, until 3/01/07. Purchase will be made and PIF just like you advised and then BT. Best Credit Card Offer for Students
Guest: DavidPalmer Post subject: Best Credit Card Offer for StudentsPosted: Mon Feb 13, 2006 9:09 pm I was wondering if it is wise to apply for another student CC, after I already have one with Bank of America, and the fact that I will be graduating in May. Should I wait until May, when I have a real job, and then apply for a CC that is not marketed towards college students. If getting another student CC is alright, which ones should I look at CardRatings.com is the most comprehensive source for comparing credit card offers.   Please visit CardRatings.com to view the best rated credit cards! Guest: maverick Posted: Tue Feb 14, 2006 8:53 am David, In my experience, student cards are only different in two ways: they might have a lower credit limit and they might have a higher APR than the regular card. If you have a short credit history and you think your score is not very high, you might want to consider getting a credit card now, since getting a student one is generally easier (lower criteria required for approval) than getting one of the regular ones. Once the initial offer period on the new card is over, you could also think about consolidating (if it is from the same bank). But if you have a somewhat long credit history, and you think your scores are good, waiting to get a 'real' job would be advisable, so that you could state a higher income than you have now. Some good student credit cards might be: Citi Dividend, AmEx Blue, AmEx Green (if you care for paying an annual fee), Bank of America, Chase (the student versions of all the above cards). Hope this helps. CardRatings.com is the most comprehensive source for comparing credit card offers.   Please visit CardRatings.com to view the best rated credit cards! Guest: quiznut1 Posted: Tue Feb 14, 2006 10:06 am I have the Citi Dividend Platinum Select credit card for college students. It has the same rebate structure as the one they target to adults. 5% cash back on gas stations, grocery stores, and drug stores, and 1% cash back on everything else. Limit $300 yearly rebate limit per calendar year. I had no problem getting approved, even though I only had a 6 month credit history. They gave me a 6 month 0% APR on purchases and balance transfers, but if you pay your bills in full and on time, I think this is the best student credit card available right now. I don't know if paying for car insurance or a cellphone bill counts towards credit, if not I have a very short credit history. Guest: Board Monitor Board Monitor/ Administrator Posted: Wed Feb 15, 2006 8:56 am David, If you've only had 6 months of credit history, you will probably have a hard time getting a decent non-student card. So, I would definitely consider getting another student card before you graduate...if you find one you're interested in. _________________ Best Regards, Curtis Arnold Board Monitor http://www.cardratings.com (501) 663-0314 Sign up for our free monthly e-mail newsletter! Guest: XeroK00L Posted: Wed Feb 15, 2006 3:10 pm While it's true that most student cards suffer from worse APRs and less credit limits than their non-student counterparts, there is ONE card you should definitely try to get before you graduate--the Citi mtvU card, simply because not only does it offer great and unique rewards but there is NO non-student counterpart for this card. Short credit history is not a problem in getting this card as Citibank seems to deny people only if they have any bad records in their credit history, which seems to be not the case for you. Just give it a try already. Guest: DavidPalmer Posted: Wed Feb 15, 2006 4:11 pm Thanks Xero, I will look into it tonight, and see whats it is all about. I hope you are not a representative of Citi, because you sound like a salesman. Guest: CreditFanatic Posted: Wed Feb 15, 2006 4:25 pm David, I've had my Bank of America Platinum Student Visa (formerly known as Fleet Fusion before BoA took over Fleet) since June of 2004. Just this morning, I called to have my student card converted to a Platinum Power Rewards. At the same time, had my credit limit raised from a measely $500 to a more usable $3000 (all this without a hard pull on my credit report!). So, what I'm trying to say is that student cards aren't so bad. Even with a high APR and low limit, you can use that to your advantage by paying off every month for a year or so. When you're ready, convert it to a regular card like mine and everything's fine. I always thought BofA gave an automatic CL increase after the first 9 months. Does anyone else know anything about the Citi MTVu card? Guest: steve Posted: Tue Feb 28, 2006 4:13 pm hi, this is my first post so i'm sorry if this is the wrong place to put it.: I was wondering if there was a student credit card that will definately approve you even if you have zero credit history. I don't even have a report yet, and I wanted to know the easiest card to get. Thanks, steve CardRatings.com is the most comprehensive source for comparing credit card offers.   Please visit CardRatings.com to view the best rated credit cards! Guest: CreditFanatic Posted: Tue Feb 28, 2006 6:13 pm I don't want to say too much, because there's really no such thing as a guarantee. However, my one of my sister who is in college now, just applied for a First Premier Bank credit card (www.firstpremier.com). Seems to me that a lot of people I know have those. So, it seems like an easy card to get. Not sure about how good the terms are though. From what I know, for my sister's card, it's 250 to start with 0%APR. However, if you have more limit and use more than 250 credit, then the apr kicks in. Make sure you check the site so you know that it is right for you. Different cards suit different people.
