Now those are name calling (dead beat) fighting words.

But,

I agree with Tom. Everyone deserves a second chance if it is merited.

I don't have an Amex card, because I owned a restaurant a few years back and the more business I gave Amex the more there fee went up. I really didn't like the way this company treated there merchants. I know it doesn’t matter much to Amex, but I decided not to carry there card.

I was a second card holder on my uncles Gold Amex card about 15 years ago. I used the card only once. He later filed bankruptcy and Amex noted my account that the card was a charge-off due to bankruptcy ON MY CREDIT REPORT. Last year, 14 year after the my uncles bankruptcy, I received an offer in the mail from Amex for a Gold Rewards Card. I took it and love it. So I guess my experience is that they will forgive you, but can take a long time!

Good luck!

I found this public posting on another board:

I represent one of those customers who had happy long term relationship with Am Ex. I even understood the cancellation of my account, which had no late or missing payments, and nothing due or owing at the time of cancellation. However, denying me an account now, twelve years later because of that cancellation, seems wrong, and harsh. Their loss not mine.

More frm another:

I am about to start a new job where my employer is planning to issue me a Amex card. I applied for an Amex card to see if all was fine. Well, I was declined for the reason that "Amex cancelled a previous account".

I contacted Amex and learned, that I had a card which was cancelled in 1982. Amex states, that I should pay the owed amount of little over $ 3.000 to get that records "purged". They have no more data or records to back up that claim. Also, they have no clue, if the card number was misused by a third party after that account was closed. I do not remember owing them anything at all. I suspect that I might have owed them perhaps a small amount after the account was closed (by me) and that this amount has grown after 20 years (late fees, third party fees, interest and finance charges etc). The funny thing is, that I never heard from Amex regarding this issue until I applied for a card several days ago. Also, there is nothing on my credit report.

The question is: should I pay this (full ?) amount to Amex? Also, would Amex really consider me for a card after having paid that old debt?

I just dont want my employer to get a message from them saying:...."we cant issue a card to that employee" -
