Post subject: Credit Card Offer for International Student

I'm an international student, and I just got my SSN through a job in campus. Last week I applied for Wellsfargo College Credit Card where I have checking/saving account there, but they rejected since they said that I didn't have any credit history. I also applied for Capitol One's College student one and Citibank College Platinium but still waiting for their answers...I'm affraid that I will get reject again My cousin suggested me to apply for some department stores' credit cards like Target or Macy's to establish my credit...Any recommendation?
Thank you

We have had this discussion recently. Many people here applied first for some gas/department store cards that are easy to get and just built a history of payment.

Some others have had a family member cosign for them on a card or got a student card (I would wait to see what your results are on that).

Some people here think secure cards are a scam. Sorry to anyone that has gone that route.

It's a good card. But also check if your campus have a student credit card. Most colleges have their own brand of credit card.

If you're in college, a good card I wished I would have taken advantage of when I was a freshman in college (I'm a senior now) is the Citi Platinum Select mtvU Visa. This card seems to target those just starting their credit history.

You earn 25 bonus thank you points every month just for paying on time and not going over your credit limit.
Also, twice a year, you can submit your college grades for the semester and earn bonus thank you points:
If your GPA is...
2.5-2.99 - 250 bonus points
3.0-3.49 - 500 bonus points
3.5-3.99 - 750 bonus points
4.0 - 2,000 bonus points

Otherwise, you will earn 5 points per dollar spent at restaurants, bookstores, record stores, movie theaters, and video rental stores, 1 point per dollar spent everywhere else.

Here is a link for the Thank You Network where you can check out the different rewards available with your points.

If you don't think this card is the best deal, you can always apply for the Citi Dividend Platinum Select for college students. This card also seems to target students that are just starting out with their credit.

The card is very generous:
5% cash back on gas station, grocery store, and drugstore purchases
1% cash back on everything else
Limit $300 yearly rebate limit, and you can cash out once you reach $50 in rewards.

Of course the only way to make both of these cards work for you with the rewards is to pay your balance in full and on time, every single month. But otherwise, both of these cards are the best I have found.
