Hey Joy Joy,
Did Amex ask you to pay off the old balance you had before they gave you a gold card.
I know someone (My sister) in a similar situation as you, but she was involved in a car accident 13 years ago and defaulted on her Amex along with everything else. She has regained her credit with Visa & MC, but has never even tried to approach Amex.
They keep sending her gold card invitations to apply by mail, but she does not apply because she feels she will open a can of worms.
Hi Big Dog,
My bills were charged off in 1987. I went back and paid every creditor (Amex yes) their money in 1988 when I received a lump sum benefit.
One day in 1990 Amex sent me a pre-approved gold card offer and I accepted it. Have had no problems to date and was just approved for a CitiAmex on 3/24/06.
I wish your sister well.

I did pay off an amex account once, 10% of the balance and they wrote the rest off but this was in another country where i was living abroad. As long as my credit was clean they offered to give me a card. And they did.
Now i am in the USA and I have no credit problems whatsoever. If i pay off the old acount now( i may owe 20k) from 1990 then will it jump start old info and cause me further pain with them? They were sending me gold account card pre aps recently i asked them to stop. I would like a card because I travel, and I use my debit card tied to my bank account for this, which is risky when travelling abroad, and its risky anyway because you expose your bank account every time you use a debit card. I dont even know the balance or any old info. if i did offer to make a good will in full payment ( not the full amount but something to purge it from their system)how long before i could reapply for another card with them? What is the risk of this showing up on my credit report now. They have stopped aksing me to pay anything towards the old balance long ago. its past the SOL.
I also have perfect credit for my business in my business name, anyone know if i can apply there without this being discovered in their system? I know they will run my credit as well as my business.
