National City's everyday rewards card has 2% cash back at restaurants. It also offers higher percentages on movie theatres, groceries, and gas. The problem with this card is that it offers less cash back than the Dividend or Cash plus cards etc. and rebate checks are only redeemable in $100 increments and points expire in 24 months. The only thing I would use this for is eating out and movies but since I would never spend enough on those to get the $100 in rebates in two years I use my other cards which have a lower rebate. I don't earn as much with those cards on restaurant purchases but I use them for all my other expenses so I can actually acheive the rebate amounts necessary to redeem.

Maybe someone else who eats out more would benefit with this card though. It doesn't have any stellar intro offers. When I signed up 4 years ago I got a 1.9% rate for three months but nothing great. National City was my introduction the the wonderful world of credit card rebates. I've since moved on to bigger and better cards however. I just keep this one cuz it's my oldest one.

Man this does stink. Well, they only give $75 back per year anyway...

The Discover Restaurant card gave $75 cash back on the first $1,500 in annual purchases (5%, if every one of them was a restaurant purchase), from there it was 3% cash back on the next $1,500 of annual purchases (3% restaurants, .5% everywhere else)

It still is a disappointment to see this card go.

Quiznut,
When I signed up the terms were different. They nixed the whole 5%, 3%, 1% deal, and after the first 1500 dollars my card defaulted to the regular rewards tier, which isn't that great. I even called them and tried to get the 5%, 3%, 1% tier like folks on here were talking about, but they wouldn't give it to me. They said that was an older promotion. Soon after they discontinued the card.

So for me, I can earn $75 in a year with the 5% back, since after $75 in restaurant rewards, I am on Discover's regular tier, and I will be better off using another card at this point. Either way, it is disappointing. I still have the Citi Professional Card which has no spending limit for their 3% back.

I called and emailed Discover but they didn't give me the same information they gave to others. The CSR on the phone said she could not find any information about the rewards going away for current cardholders. I then sent an email from the Discover website asking about it. Their response did not indicate that the rewards were going away, other than no new restaurant rewards cards issued.

Maybe it is was an internal memo that has not been made public yet?

My cousin called Discover again and talked to a crs who said current cardholders ARE NOT being canceled from the program.

This is contrary to what he was told before.

So, how do you figure? Guess we'll just have to wait and see.

Just out of curiosity, if Discover does cancel the restaurant program for current cardholders, how much notice do they have to give?

None, but they'll probably give 30 days as a courtesy.
