Information On Buying Gas

I just read this somewhere. I never knew, but find it interesting.
Buy gas during the coolest hours - Buy gas during the early morning hours or evening when the air temperature is coolest. Gas is densest during the cooler hours. Gas pumps measure volumes of gas not the concentration of gas density. You will get more for your money during the cooler hours.

I have heard that, but always forgot about it. I wonder how much difference it really makes.

According to my friendly mechanic, the difference would have to be measured in tablespoons per tank.

http://www.ingdirect.com/quicken5/
is a link to set up an Ing Direct savings account and get a $50 bonus deposited to your account. It's a promotion that's part of any purchase of Quicken 2005. You have to feed in a product number of a Quicken 2005 version on that page, such as 313737. (CompUSA lists the product numbers on its Web site for each Quicken product!)

Here are some more details.

Quote:

2.25% annual percentage yield in effect since 11/18/04 . This rate is variable and may change at any time.
$50 Bonus is only available for new accounts with a new customer as the primary account holder.
Limit one bonus per PN number. ING DIRECT Orange Savings Account.
$50 Bonus starts earning interest upon account opening, but is unavailable for withdrawal for 30 days. This is an online-only promotion.
This offer is only valid for purchasers of Quicken 2005 with valid PN numbers. Valid through 12/31/05.

I have no association with IngBank in any way and get no commission if you go for this offer--I just thought it was a nice way to make a quick $50 that anyone reading this could take advantage of. I don't see any "gotchas" in the offer. Enjoy.

I've been using ING for several years and they are a pleasure to deal with. They have one of the best web sites I have ever seen. The web site is so good I have never had to call them. I have also been using Quicken since the DOS days and currently have 12 years of financial records stored there. The one caveat is that you cannot get the $50.00 if you already have an account with ING. I tried several times using different email addresses, but I believe they check the social security number against their records.

All in all, Quicken & ING - a great combination.

Good to know, Ira.

Why not open accounts in the names/SS#s of your spouse and kids (if any)? That's what I'm going to do.

No kids and Marsha already has an account. Thus, no $50.00 bonus. Ah well....

I can now confirm that the whole process went very smoothly. Although there was no mention of the $50 bonus in the sign-up process, when I confirmed my account (by reporting two small deposits Ing made TO my checking account), the $50 bonus was right there in my account balance.

And you're right (as usual) Ira--the Ing site is wonderful. One think I especially like is that it's written in plain English. Even the usual legalese of the account terms is prefaced by a paragraph telling you what the legalese really means, written in English even I can understand without thinking too hard.

Glad you liked the site, Polonius. And the 2.25% interest on savings accounts isn't too shabby these days either!

Thanks for the tip. I filled out the app and am waiting on the verification transfers.

The 2.25% is really good for a FDIC insured savings account. My current bank only pays 1.5%.

Agree with Polonius, their legalese was the easiest to read legalese I've seen in a while.

Its looks nice. I like the way it will link upto 3 checking accounts.
Right now I have to write a check to myself to move money from
between banks, that is so primative.

And the rate intrest rate is now 2.35% Annual Percentage Yield.

Emigrant Direct, looks very very similar to ING. No fees, no min. deposit. ACH to link to checking accouts, FDIC insured, etc. However the APY is 3.0% (not a teaser rate, guanteed to hold 3% or higher thru 2005).

Actually Immigrant is now paying 3.25%. ING is not far behind at 3%. Goodness, do we have an actual price war here??

Price war? Sure.

Service war? Not even close. ING Rocks!

Emigrant DECLINED me (a banker!) for one of their savings accounts and I still don't know WHY!

Hi, Curtis. And thanks for the welcome. Found you through search engines (congrats on good rank!) The keywords were something like "fixed transfer rate" +"credit cards". It lead me to the American Express Blue which I will probably be applying for. I dug around so much, I'll be sure to go through your link again in case your cookie was overridden.

This is a nice change as far as most credit card sites are concerned (and I'm sure a good choice to have the bulletin board as far as SEO). Though I won't be around too often as I don't need more distractions, I'll check in occasionally.

Thanks, I was going to start one this week and was only going to get 25 bucks. I will use this instead.

Any others that are offering a bonus on mm accounts. I see metlife offer 50 bucks but with a 5k min. Virtual bank is also offering 25 bucks if you are referred by a customer.

If you already have an ING account, every email you send out that results in a new account will put $25 in their account AND $10 in yours. I opened a savings account for my daughter, and she sent a referral email to my spouse. Everybody wins--$60 net for our household! We're MSMoney users, but I bet if you signed up using the referral link, AND used the Quicken code, you'd get your $50 and the referrer would still get their $10. Anyone who wants to test this theory with me, respond here!

ING and EmigrantDirect do indeed appear to be vying on interest rates. ED seems to have a slight edge but ING is very close, and IMO much the friendlier site of the two. Also, ED did not allow me to open an account with a minor, which clinched the deal for ING. As of this posting, ING is paying 3.3%--my local credit union pays less than that on a 12-mo CD.

Where To Place Your Emergency Funds

Suppose you have some money you may need in emergency. You need to have handy access to it, so you leave them in your saving account with a big/local bank earning miserable 0.1% annually. What a waste! You can actually get 3.0% APR on that. Try Orange Saving Account with INGDIRECT.com.
From their website:
Earn 3.00% Annual Percentage Yield on an FDIC-insured savings account with no fees, required minimums or service charges… no matter how much you have on deposit.
It’s an account linked to one of your bank accounts, and you can easily transfer money between them in as little as 3 working days.
They're pretty good with yield increase, actually beat Federal Reserve in time and rate every time recently. So you can be sure at least your money is keeping up with inflation.
The online bank is backed by ING (NYSE:ING), a global financial institution of Dutch origin offering banking, insurance and asset management to over 60 million private, corporate and institutional clients in more than 50 countries.

There's also Emigrant Direct (http://www.emigrantdirect.com/), a division of Emigrant Savings Bank, which is based on the same model except they pay 3.25%.

Both Emigrant Direct and ING Direct can download transactions with Web Connect for Quicken.

Full Disclosure: I have no pecuniary interest in either ING Direct or Emigrant Direct except as a customer of both.

I posted the following a few months ago:
Quote:
http://www.ingdirect.com/quicken5/
is a link to set up an Ing Direct savings account and get a $50 bonus deposited to your account. It's a promotion that's part of any purchase of Quicken 2005. You have to feed in a product number of a Quicken 2005 version on that page, such as 313737. (CompUSA lists the product numbers on its Web site for each Quicken product!)

The promotion is still valid I think, so there's an extra $50 in your pocket.

Look for my earlier post in this forum for more details. And, of course, I'm not affiliated with Ing in any way and will get no commission or profit by mentioning this. I've got a buck in my ING account right now.

Right now Paypal is paying 3.5% on there money market accounts. Just apply for the Paypal debit card. You can transfer money in and out of your bank acount to your paypal account. Use the card like a Mastercard...get cash back and earn 3.5% on your balance. I am still trying to find a reason not to do this one. Seems like a winning situation.

Paypal is not FDIC insured, stay away.

HSBC is offering 3.75% with the same model as ING and EmigrantDirect.

Can't believe they're not FDIC insured. But, they are owned by Ebay.

It's actually a money market fund (MMF). They deposit the funds in a Barclays Global Investor's money market mutual fund, which is not FDIC insured. While it is a large financial institution -- offering a variety of ETFs -- the funds themseves are not insured. Although I thought that SIPC (or words to that effect) had some version of insurance in case the company goes TU.

If you want the warm and fuzzy feeling of being federally insured, the PayPal MMF is not the way to go.

I do like the sound of the HSBC Online Savings Account. I may give that a try. Thanks for the heads-up hesiden! Theoretically, HSBC has DirectConnect and WebConnect with Quicken.

BTW, and I know this from watching the History Channel, that HSBC stands for Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation. It is a British global financial institution with a long history of prudent and conservative banking practices. Which is surprising they'd offer an above market average savings account with ATM access. Maybe it's their "loss leader" to get people to open checking accounts, CDs, and loans?

Hi y'all.

I put mine in Emigrant. I had mine in savings at my bank for the lousy .1 % interest and took it all out but 1,000 and put into Emigrant. I love it and made almost 20.00 in just my first month of sitting there.

Emigrant is at 3.5% and I wonder if any of you ever have 2 accounts and transfer from one to the other depending on who has highest interest. What would be some pros and cons of that. I like that HSBC interest rate and wouldn't mind switching if worth my while. Is that a introductory rate for a few months? Thanks.

It doesn't say it is an intro rate, according to the "terms and conditions" it is the regular rate, but I'm sure they reserve the right to change it at the drop of a hat.

As for multiple accounts, I see it as having multiple points of failure. If one bank goes TU, I'll still have money tucked away elsewhere while working with the FDIC to get my money back.

A con is having multiple accounts to keep track of and reconcile every month.

Are your deposits insured?
It would probably be good to review the FAQ of FDIC insurance if you're not familiar with them.

Payday Loan Laws

Hello,
New here and need some fast help if I may ask.
I have a couple pay day loans out that are due on 9-1 and with my hours cut the last two weeks and I didn't know they was going to do this, I won't have all the money to pay them on 9-1.
What do I do, I already called one of them and they said NO, will not accept anything other than the total amount. PERIOD.

Does anyone have any suggestions or laws I can look up?
Thanks!

Some states I see have the POST DATED check law that makes it illegal for them to do anything and forces them to work with you. These were all postdated. I also read that once it bouces, its no longer a check ( if it is postdated ) and becomes a loan, and they have to sue me if it is a loan and would give me some more time to pay them.
?? Cannot find laws on the net covering these type loans. Any websites?

Stay AWAY from this type of loan. It is one of the costliest forms of credit imaginable. See the following for more information:

It is probably good for you that they dont extend it since it will just work into more fees.
