I have over $500K total CL, out of that I have $200K HELOC, and $300K spread accross various CC or LOC CC - thick file, no baddies..had a few lates that were removed with goodwill letters, have CL with all major players except AMEX - closed all total of $150K CL with them due to F/R review request. Scores are high 700 on EX,EQ, and just recently joined the 800 club on TU

It's not the number of cards one has (it seems) but how well they use the ones that they do have. From the two posters above, this fact bears this out. WTG CreditDiva on 800 with TU! They are my lowest scorer by far. Equifax is my highest and always has been.

I've been reading different websites and different financial gurus websites as well and I find no two people can agree on how many cards one should have, what amount of utilization one should have, when to close cards, etc., etc. I am of the opinion now that what works for you, just continue doing it.

total household credit from credit cards is almost 300k and my history is 10 years....just started aggressively applying for more and more in 2004 to use for investing and sign on bonuses....no lates or anything derogatory...

before 2004, only had a couple of cards and used them for everyday purchases and paid off every month...even closed a few that I didnt use....didnt start my first credit card until I started my first job out of college....

You don't want to close out the small ones if they have long credit history, give them another chance and request a credit limit increase. Only close out the youngest accounts. If you can combined credit cards then that is another option.

Thanks! I am 20 now, as of 2 months ago.

I have had great success with that card. I use it often and pay it in full every month. Twice I have asked for a CLI and they gave me $1000 each time without doing a hard pull.

I am wondering though--do I need to have a bunch of cards like everyone else? This credit limit is more than enough to cover my monthly expenses because I pay in full. I want to use credit in a way that maximizes my FICO score so I can eventually get good interest rates on mortgage loans; does this mean I am doing OK or should I get more credit?

So we both have 10 months of credit history, but you have.. $28,400 more in credit and 11 more credit cards.

Am I seen as the one who has worse credit because I don't have as much credit experience and I have a higher utilization (out of my $3200) or are you seen as the one with worse credit because you opened, on average, 1.2 cards every month?

My guess is the ideal situation (in terms of FICO) is somewhere between you and me? Anyone can feel free to chime in on this.

You dont have to be like everyone else make shure you get enough credit to make you happy I have too many cards Im slowly getting rid of most, 2 or 3 sounds right for me, dont let me or anyone tell you what you need or dont need, Im 27 I never thought I would even have more then one card after the first one came I got a little crazy  but it looks good to me on my credit report please dont rush to get so many credit cards its hard to manage more then 6 for me plus I dont even use them all.

If you want a bigger credit limit like 20k plus try americanexpress they give a lot of credit increases on just one card I have one thats at 15k and i have had credit for two years and some months.

Good Luck!!! :D

10 months of credit

Hmm i wounder what else can i add to my collection of cards?

So we both have 10 months of credit history, but you have.. $28,400 more in credit and 11 more credit cards.

Am I seen as the one who has worse credit because I don't have as much credit experience and I have a higher utilization (out of my $3200) or are you seen as the one with worse credit because you opened, on average, 1.2 cards every month?

My guess is the ideal situation (in terms of FICO) is somewhere between you and me? Anyone can feel free to chime in on this.

Well right now my scores are kinda low since i applied for many cards, but i recently applied for a american express optima, and amex green card, and i got approved for both. My scores are around 690. And I didnt start out with that much credit, when i applied i got low limits, and they just gotten a little higher because i kept on clicking the cli buttons. As for the other cards, I bank with bank of america, us bank, and hsbc, and that seemed to help a little.

Side note, i applied for two amex cards on the same day, but it appeared to have two inquiries , One from 12-27-06 and one from 12-28-06 , can they do that?

Hmm, interesting. Well I hope my credit score is above 700, but it might not be. Either way, I don't want to have that many cards.

I just applied for a new one and I wonder if I even should have done that.

UPDATE!

My new situation:

Citi Dividend Platinum Select Visa: $3200
Chase Platinum Mastercard: $5000

Woohoo!!
