Officials at
Discover Card unveiled some early holiday cheer this week. Cardmembers learned that their usual
cashback reward will double, from up to 1% of purchases to a full 2% of purchases made at specific categories of holiday shopping retailers. The holiday credit card reward doubles rebates for transactions made at:
- clothing stores,
- department stores,
- jewelry stores, and
- online retailers, such as Amazon.com.
Credit card industry analysts note that this early announcement may help Discover Card gain wallet space in the weeks leading up to the crucial holiday retail shopping season. Encouraging more deliberate use of the Discover Cashback card can boost profits for the lender, which pays rebates from merchant fees. Discover officials told reporters that the performance of this first-ever holiday bonus reward program may lead to similar offers in future. In addition, many Discover cardmembers already enjoy a seasonal cashback reward bonus of up to five percent on purchases made in grocery stores, restaurants, movie theaters, and movie rental stores.
