Lillian Pariseault might have thought she would save some money down the road when she swiped her Discover Card to pay for a routine oil change. The 86-year-old Florida resident didn't expect her $25 purchase would turn into a million dollar prize. Discover Financial Services officials announced Pariseault as the winner of their first "It Pays to Discover Everyday Giveaway" sweepstakes after choosing her credit card receipt from millions of eligible entries.

During the 2010 sweepstakes period, Discover cardholders earned contest entries with every purchase they made using an eligible account, or by completing a free online entry form. Pariseault registered her winning entry at Haller's Automotive, in her hometown of New Port Richey, Florida.

Contest organizers dispatched a limousine to pick up the lucky retiree, leaving her unaware of her prize until she arrived at the auto repair shop. There, Discover president Harit Talwar and Haller's owner Shawn Lauer helped celebrate her new millionaire status. Discover Card has posted details for the 2011 edition of the Discover Everyday sweepstakes at DiscoverGiveaway.com.

About Our Ratings ×

Our editors rate credit cards objectively based on the features the credit card offers consumers, the fees and interest rates, and how a credit card compares with other cards in its category. Ratings vary by category, and the same card may receive a certain number of stars in one category and a higher or lower number in another.

The ratings are the expert opinion of our editors, and not influenced by any remuneration this site may receive from card issuers.
