"Maxed Out" Credit Card Documentary To Debut at 2006 SXSW Film Festival

By Curtis Arnold, CardRatings.com Founder

An interesting new documentary about credit card debt entitled "Maxed Out" will make its world premiere at the South by Southwest (SXSW) Film Festival in Austin, Texas on March 10-18. The documentary provides a comical and, at the same time, disturbing glimpse into what makes Americans addicted to credit card debt. "Maxed Out" will be part of the festival's Documentary Feature Competition, which includes other films that contain themes about the world economy. The documentary is directed by James Scurlock.

A documentary about credit card debt is indeed unique. In fact, as far as I know, this is uncharted territory. Let's hope that the documentary does well in the competition and brings some negative publicity to one of America's worst addictions. Considering that the average American family has roughly $8,000-$10,000 of card debt (depending on the survey that you reference), a documentary of this type is long past overdue (yes a pun was intended!).

2006 marks the 13th year of the South by Southwest(SXSW) Film Conference and Festival. The Festival emphasizes all aspects of the art and business of independent filmmaking. The Festival has gained international acclaim for the quality of its programming. Every year, film industry leaders gather with film fans from around the world for nine days of screenings and four days of panels.
