New GM Flexible Earnings Credit Card Gives Cardholders More Rebate Choices

By Lydia Verret, CardRatings.com Reporter

General Motors Corporation recently launched a new version of the popular GM credit card called the GM Flexible Earnings card.    It allows users to earn a 1% cash rebate on all credit card purchases made, but will triple those points if the cardholder chooses to put their points toward the purchase or lease of a GM vehicle.

GM gives users of the Flexible Earnings card the option of redeeming their rebate for whatever they choose, even for a vehicle other than GM.    Consumers can also choose to triple their points earned if the cardholder purchases or leases a GM vehicle.    For example, a $600 rebate can be redeemed for a $600 cash back or $1,800 off the purchase of most new GM vehicles.    GM still offers other types of credit cards including their original GM Card, which allows cardholders to earn a 5% rebate that must be applied toward the purchase of a new GM vehicle.

The new GM Flexible Earnings card is part of a trend in the credit card industry allowing consumers to choose how to redeem their credit card rewards.    According to Comperemedia, over 60% of all credit cards now have a reward program allowing cardholders to earn points based on their credit card spending.    Some examples of options offered are cash back, discounts on rental cars, gift certificates and vacation packages.

According to The Daily Oakland Express, Mark Hines, marketing director for GM cardmember services, said the new Flexible Earnings card will enable GM to reach a new group of consumers, who want one of the richest co-branded credit cards in existence and also want more options in how they use their earnings.   Over six million consumers currently carry a GM credit card.   Since its launch in 1992, the GM Card has helped GM sell or lease approximately 5 million vehicles.
