I’ll try to make this as short as possible.

My partner and I are in the process of refinancing our house. We have run into a roadblock. This roadblock is a credit card that her ex-husband added her name to without her consent a number of years ago.

She wrote a letter to the credit card company asking them to remove her name and also disputed it to the credit reporting agency due to fraud. This was 3 years ago and we still have not heard anything from the credit card company. Shortly after she disputed it with the credit reporting agency it was taken off of that report. Or so we thought. Its showing up as a judgement against her on the reports from all other companies and the credit card company keeps giving us the run around (we can’t help you-call this number…oh no we don’t deal with that-call this number…we don’t have that file-call this number, etc.) She was given at least 8 different numbers today (Some to the credit card company and some to a Law Office). She finally spoke to a live person from a law office/collection company who had the account and she said that they were unwilling to provide her with the signature card and/or the signed application. They will do nothing to help her fix this and it is her burden to do so.

I was informed to tell them that we will gladly go to the media, the Federal Trade Commission and the Attorney General for the state of Maryland. This did not seem to bother them at all. I’m sure the credit card company would be affected by this statement, but alas no one will return our phone calls.

I’m at a loss. I have no idea where to go from here. I’m looking for further suggestions or someone who has gone through a similar experience. I really have to go through with this refi in the next week or so in order to keep the low rate they are willing to give.
