They'll have to check your credit score. Depending on the company, that can be done almost immediately. If you're new to cards, or are a bigger credit risk, that may be the reason for the delay.
Once you build up your credit score over time, the results should come quicker. Hope this helps - jo

I've gotten these instant over the past year and a half;

Amex Blue
Amex Hilton
Citi Dividends
Citi PP (converted to PS)
BOA Platinum
Target store card


These weren't instant;

Wamu Mastercard
Chevron charge card
JCB

I just applied for US Bank and Kay Jewelers. US Bank denied me instantly, and Kay Jewelers said I would receive something within 7 to 10 business days, I think that is a denial too.

Exp 645
EQ 641

I was approved for a Providian card $1500 last week. This is it, I am not applying for anything else. I have six inq this month.

All my current credit cards I got an instant approval online:

Chevron: $1500
Target: $500
Capital One: $300

And just yesterday:

Platinum Visa: Unknown limit
