Publix sells gift cards for department stores (Sears, Kohls, Bed Bath and Beyond) and restaurants, et al. Albiet not other grocery stores, of course, but they sell them at face value. With the 5% cash back at grocery stores, that means get 5% cash back on non-grocery gift cards too.
I’ll consider swinging by Walgreens and CVS to see what they have available.

I have done this before on my citi dividend card (bought give cards at supermarket) and got the 5% back. You have to be careful since some of the gift cards expire in 2 years.

Some cards charge a monthly fee if they’re not used (but generally the fee is waived for the first six months or a year).
In California, gift cards NEVER expired–there’s a state law forbidding it.

safeway in ca charges face value. the only ones that have a fee are the pre-paid visa/amex/m/c. they have store cards for home depot, olive garden, cheese cake factory, sears, chilles (but good for several others too), etc, they sell gift cards for about 50 different chains. safeway probably sells them, b/c they get a cut from those gift card companies
