Post subject: Credit Card Account Closed Due in Inactivity

First post here, seems like a nice place to vent.
So I read the posts and like everyone else, I am looking for the most advantageous use of credit cards. After all they are taking from “us”, using credit cards to a financial advantage when “we” can seems attractive.
Like many have suggested, using the “don’t ask, don’t get” line of thinking, I pulled out my Exxon/Mobil gas cards that I haven’t used in a year or two. I confirmed that the cards weren’t expired, then I called customer service using the 800 number on the back of the cards.
These aren’t Visa or M/C, just “gas cards”. We also have our speedpass keychain devices.
So I explain to the customer service rep that Chase currently rebates our fuel purchases automatically by crediting 5% to our next statement without a request. I question if Exxon/Mobil offers any rebates that would sway me to start using their cards/speedpass again.
The lady politely tells me that due to inactivity, my current UNexpired cards/speedpasses are no longer valid and I would have to RE-apply to be able to use them.
Additionally, they currently do not offer any gas rebates.
Thank You Exxon/Mobil, as a customer/cardholder for over 10 years, I don’t think I will be re-applying for anything, nor will I be Patronizing your stations unless absolutley necessary.
Before anyone posts that I won’t have any effect on such a huge oil god, I would say that it’s still my choice as to where my money is spent.
Thanks for sharing and letting me vent on this interesting board.

I think a good first question when applying for credit cards is “How much or how often will I be using this card?”
I remember 10 years ago, the world of credit cards was very “bland” to put it mildly, no frills/rebates, etc.
Now, with the industry heating up and more cards with more perks to choose from, cards that have no benefits/rebates are being kicked to the curb.
Its always smart to use each card, at least once every six months, this way, inactivity flags do not appear on your account.
The only down side I can see, is that you have 10 years of credit history that will be closed, and it might show up “Closed by credit grantor”.
GE Money Bank is the issuer of Mobil/Exxon, but they also handle Macy’s, JC Penney and Walmart/Walmart Discover.
Life will go on

does it really matter if it says who it was closed by as long as it shows, ON-TIME PAYEMENTS for those 10 years??. i have one card that shows closed by grantor, due to the bank was sold. i did not want the new card from the bank b/c the terms and cond sucked.

Sounds like closed due to inactivity. Open one of the many 5% gas rebate cards and be done with it.
