Searching for Credit Card With No Credit History

Post subject: non-student no credit history help?

Hi all, I'm a non-student who has no previous credit. I was in college for one year but was suspended for bad grades. Now I'm working, making about $3600 a year. I'm trying to find a credit card with a low spending limit but am having a very difficult time finding one for non-students. All the cards I have looked at require somewhere around $15k annual income, and I don't make anywhere NEAR that. If anyone can help it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Post subject: Aspire Preapproved Offer-LOL

I just received a new preapproved notice from Aspire. In some ways, it's better than the offer I signed up with back in Sept 2003. Back then, I paid something like a $100 annual fee, plus $7 a month for a participation fee. Their new offer is as follows: APR for purchases: 29.75% APR for cash advances: 35.75% Annual Fee: $85 I don't see a particiaption fee anywhere in the summary of credit terms. Since I pay off my cards every month, this wouldn't be a horrible deal, but I think I'll stay away from them. I'm afraid they'll pull their no statement trick on me. I canclled the card three months after I got it originally, so I shouldn't go back to them, right?

Those fees are outrageouos, no doubt about it. I do not know your credit situation, but if you need to take the card to build history then go for it. Have you compared this offer to a secured card? If you can afford to put money down for a secured card, I would do that instead of taking this crummy offer. If you don't have an extra $500 laying around, then take this card. HOWEVER, MAKE SURE YOU PAY IT OFF EVERY MONTH. DO NOT CARRY A BALANCE, EVER! I put that in caps because that is how important it is.

I know it is a crummy offer, but I don't expect much as I just had a chapter 7 BK in July 2003. I already have an Orchard Bank card, which is a good deal for those with poor credit, and two secured cards. First Premier and Aspire send me an changing offer every month now.

i guess i am looking to get the most back so something like if i get 2% cash back vs 3% cash back for gas purchases then i would want the gas card. but do you have like a list of some pretty good ones? maybe one from every "class"?

Here is what is recommended by this site:

http://www.cardratings.com/cashbackcreditcards.html

Here is others located just by typing in credit card rewards:

credit-card-applications-center.com/cash-back-credit-cards.htm

creditcardmenu.com/ccm/cash_rebate_credit_cards.html

creditcardshop.com/

creditcardgoodies.com/analysis/

cardweb.com/cardlocator/featured.amp

Right now looks like Chase is one of the better offers out there, least what I keep seeing from site to site.

I ran across one credit card site that offered to invest 1% of purchases for you. I do not remember the location of this site. Does anyone know of any cards off hand that invests your reward? (as opposed to cash back, FF miles, rebates, ect ..)

Post subject: Rewards

I look for the dollar equivalent of rewards to measure how good the rewards program is. The easiest to judge is a program that gives you cash back. Most will payoff at a 1% rate. Charge $5000, get a $50 gift certificate. Watchout for mechandise rewards. You will find that you can do much better taking the cash and going out and buying the reward at a local discounter. Compare the bottom line in dollars and most merchandise rewards payoff at about a 0.7% rate. The best cash back card that I found is the Fidelity Investments card that pays cash back at a 1.5% rate. That is really good. The catch is that you have to have a Fidelity brokerage account. I think the gas cards and GM cards pay at a pretty good rate too. If you can pay off your card monthly and avoid interest charges and fees, reward cards can be worth something.

Has anyone ever gotten the magic phone number for the Aspire people? The one on the card is just a collection of recordings, with no actual humans. I've tried e-mailing them and they responded with a series of useless statements that completely ignored my question! I need to talk to someone there! Any help is appreciated.

Thanks.

Aspire is notorious for a lack of customer service. They are more like a collection agency than a credit card. They can be found at: compucredit.com I don't know how much help that will be. Try the links to the Aspire card but you may only get the same 800# they already don't answer. You may have to report them to the appropriate authority, BBB, state attorney generals (yours and theirs) and FTC. Aspire is a bad deal all the way around.

this may be a little late but the phone number where you can get a live person is 1-888-790-9926, i obtained it from the georgia BBB after searching for 2 hours. when you call it press one for english, then # it should put you on hold, the helpful thing to do is to act like you dont have your acct number, they will ask for your ss#, you can make a payment by phone, if you get someone nice, the might not charge you. and if the person acts like they cannot help you, just call back and get someone else.( i had to call back twice). this is the worst company i have ever had to deal with. i havent gotten an actual bill since june 2003, and its 2/2004, they blamed the post office stating they were sending the statements back? i never have any problems with my other mail....

Aspire Visa Cardholders and Consumer inquiries E-Mail:customerservice@aspirecard.com or call toll free: 1-800-348-8783 The other numbers were not good.. I've tried this number and I wanted to view the statement.. then go through other options .. then it transfered me to a Customer Rep. then I told her to cancel my account. She placed me on hold then came back and said I will receive a cancellation of service letter within 7-10 days. This credit card service is the WORST I've ever seen and finally I can sleep tight and not worry about this stupid service anymore.

They are both owned by Compucredit at: compucredit.com/pdcts.html - a very shady operation. The complaints about them are endless.

When I reached my credit limit I buried my card deep in my wallet and determined not to use it until it was paid off. I had lost my job and this took awhile. I just received a letter from Aspire saying I was $100 over my limit. I haven't touched it so I immediately thought it was stolen. I used the 1-866-816-6993 number and selected lost/stolen cards. I actually got a customer service rep. although he was like a computer and not very friendly. He told me that they had charged me a yearly service charge - the first one and without any warning. This put me over the limit and they cancelled my card the next day - not renewable. They really don't know how to keep their customers.

Post subject: aspire rip off

My visa account was sold to aspire by Providian. I had an A+ history with Providian and they kept increasing my credit line. Suddenly, they closed my account and told me I had a bad credit history (they didn't know this until they sold my account?). Funny, I have a Master Card with them also....and this wasn't touched. Aspire is now the "collection agency" and sends me a bill every 2 or 3 months. Now, I am trying to arrange online payments and can't find them to do it, even by their own address on my bill! Seems they don't want my money. They just want to keep charging me. I paid over the phone and they negleted to tell me about the $12 fee. Whenever you sign up for anything at all - a phone plan, etc. - always ask if there are any fees, taxes or any other charges. No one will tell you if you don't ask and then you get a surprise on your bill. Your $40 plan turns into a $55 bill with extra untold charges. Remember, ask all of them before you say yes.

I don't think I have ever had a harder time trying to get in touch with a customer service representative. The number I finally got through with is 888-576-9432. Just keep pushing 2 to stay on the line and wait for the next available rep. When I finally got through I was transferred to somewhere else where they were actually able to cancel my account. I wish I could rent a Billboard and post these comments to warn off anyone thinking about opening an account with this devel credit card company.

you know instead of trying to call them, why not send a ceritfied letter? Why you may ask why i'll tell you. 1 no waiting on the phone 2 not having to speak with a customer service rep who may not be the greatest at english 3 you know when they get the letter 4 you can have proof of the letter being sent if any legal issues come about. 5 no waiting on the phone or searching for the right phone #, all correspondence goes to georgia so you know it won't cost much and the will understand what you mean when you state in the letter "close the account" or "here's my new address".

I used to have an Aspire card. Do yourself a favor and get rid of them. If you have this card, obviously you have poor credit like I do. For those with poor credit, I would recommend the Orchard Bank card issued by Household. Their annual fee is much lower, and they don't charge a monthly maintenance fee. Also, your payments aren't held for 10 days for verification at Orchard Bank as they are for Aspire. [/i]

I give up too! Like "angel", I was one of the 400,000+ Providian customers who suddenly became high-risks despite spotless credit with Providian and an $8,500 limit. My Visa was sold was sold to Aspire, but not the MasterCard. Actually, Aspire lowered my interest rate and waived their customary fees. Despite all the poor customer reviews, I decided to keep the the account. I should have listened! This customer service problem just keeps getting worse and worse. Now the computer man doesn't recognize my account number or my SSN. This number worked for me too: 1-888-790-9926. You still get the computerized version but it connects you to a human (an American no less!). Call while you can - they'll probably change this number too! Found State Farm Visa to be good if you're an insurance customer of theirs. The interest rate is 9.9% and they play no games. Sorry - I don't know the requirements for approval. QW

Aspire is notorious for a lack of customer service but I did find this from the aspire card web page under contact info: "If you would like to contact Customer Service via email regarding your account, please include your name (as it appears on your credit card) , the last four digits of your Social Security number, the last four digits of your account number, and date of birth along with your concern or question and a Customer Service representative will respond to you promptly. billydpk Please remove your post, and personal information, this is not the processing center for any one given credit card company this is just a public message board. Put in request to delete this post for you, if you have questions that is fine, but we can't lower your interest rate for you... needs to be mailed in to your creditor (use the address on your billing statement). There is a dispute address there.

Billy, In addition to what NightStar said - Never include your code word or mother's maiden name in a written message. This is used to verify your identity when you speak with customer service over the phone. Never volunteer it and be certain about who's asking for it.
