There are a lot of 0% for 12-months programs out there. I was thinking about applying for all of them, investing the money, and then paying back the debt before the offer expires. It's like free money! What do you guys think of this idea? Is anyone else trying this?

Post subject: Providian/Card Services

Hi I was wondering if anyone else has had these problems. My husband and i both had Providian accounts and then he was laid off from work we both entered into payment plans with them and then they sold the accounts to Card services. My payment plan had been in effect long enough for it to carry over his they said they could not honor. They now call us ALL the time. For instance I made a payment on 8/21 on both accounts and they still called us on saturday 8/23 after spending more than enough time getting transferred to finally get a manager--I was told they would take my number out of the dialer--Lo and behold they called again that afternoon. By law they cannot contact you for 7 days after speaking with them and i have threatened them with contacting the attorney general serveral times. everytime I make this threat they ease up and then we go through this all over again--any suggestions??

ATM Card vs. Check Card

I have a plain old ATM card, and my bank just "sent" me a Visa check card, with a note about it being an upgrade, blah, blah, blah. I use credit cards, and my ATM card, to get cash. On the one hand, the check card sounds convenient, but is it a bag of worms?? I really use the ATMs for cash, and that is it. I do purchases with rewards credit cards.

Merge of Credit Card Companies

I have a Bank One Visa with a $14,500 limit and a Chase Perfectcard with a $13000 limit. Once they merge, does anyone know if I can combine the two cards into one $27,500 Perfectcard from Chase? I am thinking of getting rid of the Visa because the Chase Perfectcard has a better reward program, but only if I can combine them, because I don't want to lose the $14,500 credit limit from Visa. Maybe the merger will allow me to do this? Does Chase do stuff like this?

Too Many Credit Report Inquiries May Be the Fault of CRA

Post subject: Chase Mortgage

Hi. I am a 21 year old who has established a strong credit history. I have one issue I would like to ask advice on. I recently applied for a credit card (citibank) and was told I was declined because I had too many inquries in the past six months. When I pulled my credit report up I kept seeing inquiries for Chase Mortgage. They do not stipulate that it is a periodic review. Let me back track here. Since I was 18 I was having inquries from Chase Mortgage every month on my credit report showing up as a periodic review. When I called chase and asked them about this they said it could be how the system works because I have the same name as my father. I don't have a mortgage but my father does with this institution. I tried to get this issue resolved years ago by fighting with Chase to have them stop pulling up my credit report (even though other creditors couldnt see it) Now, they are not coming up as a periodic review, they are available for any creditor to see and they have been pulling up my credit report every month. The credit bureau told me I have to contact the bank. Chase doesn't know how to correct the problem and no matter what I do they can't stop it. Any ideas?

Credit Card Surcharges

I've read in many places that MasterCard and Visa merchant agreements forbid merchants from levying a surcharge for credit card use. Is this really true? Can anyone point me to a definitive statement of this policy on a Vias or MasterCard website, or some other reliable online source?

This is the best intro offer I've ever seen, but it seems to be available only to existing CitiBank clients by invitation only. There's no annual fee. During that first year it offers a 5% cash rebate on ANY gasoline purchase, ANY supermarket purchase, and ANY drug store purchase. They also incorporate a 1.9% balance transfer rate through December, 2004 with no balance transfer fee. After that the rate goes to 9.9%. The purchase rate is a fixed 9.9%. Rebate checks are send when rebates reach $100.00, and rebates are capped at $300.00 per year.

Providian Credit Card Real Rewards

Post subject: Providian Real Rewards

Hi, I just received a pre-approved offer from Providian. It looks very good, and I wonder if anyone see it:

Earn Points: * 500 points for first purchase * 1 point per $1 spent * 10 points for every $100 in revolving balances per billing cycle (no point earned in billing cycle with no periodic finance charges) * 500 points for paying on time every six consecutive billing cycles. (This is news and very attractive feature)

Redeem Points: * APR reductions; never lower than prime rate. They don't explain how it works * statement credit. No mention of the redeeming rate, and customer service can't answer either. *

Airline Ticket Discounts: 5000 for $50 off any airline ticket, 7500 for $75 off and 15000 for $150 off. That's 1% return. *

Merchandise and restaurant certificates: There are a list of well-known companies like Applebee, Barnes & Nobles, Macy's, Olive Garden, etc. Some charge $1.50 monthly for 12- or 15-month or longer inactive accounts.

Don't know if one has automatically join those service, and customer service can't answer it either. My guess is if one redeems for Applebee's gift certificate and not use it for 24 months, they will deduce $1.50 each month as a maintenance fee. It is no surprise that they don't detail their reward program until one applies and is approved. However, 500 points for 6 consecutive on-time payments is the first I have seen that reward for being good. On the other hand, I heard a lot of bad things about Providian.

If anyone is interested, you can call them at 1-800-918-9172. The product # is 7K82HS. Sorry, can't tell you what the Reservation # is.

Have a nice weekend.
