Post subject: Problems Closing Providian Credit Card Account
Hey all, just a word of warning, and also to check if others have received similar letters... I paid my Providian account off back in May 2002, after they hiked my interest rate to 29.99%, and closed my account.
A few weeks after, I received a letter from Emerge, claiming that my (supposedly closed) account had been transferred to them. I wrote to Emerge, and also filed a dispute with the credit bureau, as they had also been reporting the account to them (under a different account number, of course).
That was the last I heard, until I received a Collection letter today from the Wolpoff and Abramson, LLP, based in Maryland. They claim they are acting on behalf of "Great Seneca Financial Corp, Assignee of Providian", and that I owe nearly $1200.
The account number referenced is neither my original Providian account number, nor is it the one Emerge gave to me. Of course my first step will be to contact Wolpoff & Abramson, but I thought I'd mention it here, in case there are any similar experiences.
Also, in case things get nasty, does anyone have a link to any sample cease & desist letters? Thanks, and wish me luck!
David.
