Post subject: I have no credit history… And have no idea what im doing!

Alright, as the title mentions, I have no credit history and my parents are afraid to “cosign” anything for me.

The whole reason for me wanting a credit card is to establish credit so that when im older, i will pay less, rewards, ect.

Anyways… Im 20 years old and honestly never thought about a credit card until now… Ive always used cash but, now im thinking carrying a card will be better and much safer for me.

The main problem that im facing is, I can apply for credit cards but I will easily get declined (as I have been declined twice already).

I tried signing up for the Amex blue and the CitiBank Divident Plat. I received a form from Discovery card (student) and sent it back out (dont know if im accepted or not).

So, im basically looking for ways to give myself credit so that I can well, get myself a credit card and have great credit when im older.

Ive checked out the forum and found great information but, figured a thread will give me direct answers to my questions…

I heard I can go to the mall and get a department store credit card but, I dont go shopping! So, why bother?

I heard I can get a “gas” card but, Dont they require somewhat credit?

A secured card… Ive heard they dont offer them as much anymore?

I heard I can go to the bank ask for a loan and before I get the money, pay them back?

Id like to ask if the age of 20 is too late to start? Or am I at the “right” age/little late? How long will it take for me to start establishing credit?

Thank G_D for a forum like this and for the maturity on this forum!

ehhh. u started out applying for amex blue and citi platinum, not a good move. Are you a student?? If so, student cards would be your best bet. Do you have any negative info on your credit report?? If not, then try a target card or some other dpet store card. You have to begin somewhere

If you do not have anything bad, my first cards were cap one, chase, and discover student.

If you do decide to go with a Secured Card, I have been happy with Bank of America (no problems, treated like a normal customer, but did require a Bof A Chequing account) and very unhappy with First Premier (terrible service, hold payments even if you have never been late).
