Mtvu Credit Card Vs. Drivers Edge Credit Card Review

Post subject: New to Credit...Questions!

I am brand new to the credit card world! I am a college student with no debts and just bank accounts, checking and savings. I have student loans (from the government) that will kick in for my fall semester. Now I'm looking for a credit card to start building my credit reputation!

I've read the many reviews and information on the website and after a lot of consideration, I've decided to apply for one of the Citi student cards. Right now I'm torn between the mtvU one (because of the benefits for grades and purchases) and the Driver's Edge one. What would you recommend? Oh, and when I go to look at the application it isn't on Citi bank's server, it's on accountonline.com. Is this a scammer's site or the bank's actual one?

Now after I get approved (fingers crossed ) is it a good idea to make small purchases and pay off each month or should I buy something more expensive and just pay the minimum for a few months? After I establish a payment history, how long before I can get another card?

Thank you!

I'd recommend Driver's Edge for the 3% rebates.

The accountonline.com server is correct for Citibank.

And I'd recommend making small purchases and paying them off each month to save on interest and keep your spending in check. As far as the next card, you would be in good shape applying for another student card after about 6 months.

since u will not be charged interest for either 6 months or a year, u can make a big purchase and just make payments. However, what i did was make small purchases usually around $100-$200 a billing cycle and just paid it off at the end of the month.

When it comes to when should u get another CC, most will tell u 6 months, but 4 months after getting a BofA cc, i applied for a Chase CC and was approved. Just make sure your payments are on time

Thanks! I wanted to make sure the site was legitimate before I gave it my life history!

My only hesitation with the Driver's Edge card is that someone told me it was harder to get approval on (when compared with the mtvU one). I don't know if that's the case or not, seeing as how they are both Citi cards. I noticed that with the Driver's Edge you have the option of applying for the Visa or the MasterCard versions... is there any real difference? When I glanced at them, the terms and APRs look about the same to me.

Two more questions! Is it possible to add an authorized user to a student account? and When I apply for another card in 4-6 months, should I try for another Citi card or should I go for a different lender (Chase, AmEx, BoA, etc.)?

Thanks, again! [/quote]

I don;t know if they do AU;s on such cards but the notion makes my red flag go up. NOTHING about that seems to be a good idea for someone new to credit. The chances of having your credit damaged far outweigh any benefit it may give you or someone else.

You may find it easier to get approved for a regular cc with citi than other lenders with the history. THEN you can work into other lenders.

I would avoid geting 2,3 or several student cards as then you have to deal with your oldest account being accounts you are not liekly to use anymore. GO for the standard cards now or wait a bit till yo ucan get them.

As for the big purchase vs small purchases.....DO NOT BUY ANYTHING you can not pay cash for. Credit is a great tool. IT IS NOT for buying things you can not afford. If you start doing that, it is likely you will find your self deep in debt or with bad credit. Fight the temptation.
