Merrick Bank Credit Card Tips

Just wondering about those who have a Merrick Bank Visa and their experiences with the card. I did a search online for the bank and came up with tons of horror stories. The Administrator on this board recommends keeping away from Merrick Bank, but doesn't say why. Is it the high interest rate, fees, etc., or are they borderline unethical as it looks like from what I have read. I'm a little nervous.

There is usually a reason to be warned away from cards especially on this board. Have you tried Household bank or orchard if you're rebuilding? I read the merrick disclosures and according to the stories here they have a habit of reporting closed by grantor even when you opt to close it yourself. You may not worry about it now but when you're ready to move on to something better you certainly don't want that on your report.

Thanks Brammy. Since I just applied for it, I'll be keeping it long term (probably), and I'll keep an eye out for what they put on my credit report. I wish I had done my homework before applying. I haven't paid any attention to any of the other offers I have received recently, or I would have noticed that they were much more attractive than Merrick.

I applied for an Orchard Bank card the other day and received that. It should be okay considering its part of HSBC. I'm amazed they considered me because I included HSBC as a creditor in my BK.

I'll note that there's been a considerable improvement in cardholder ratings posted here over the last year or so (with the exception of one very recent post). People are pretty good about posting dissatisfaction, so I take this as a favorable sign. Prior to a year ago, ratings were mediocre.

My first card was a Chase secured card that was sold to Merrick. I closed it once I had a couple of prime cards in mid 2005. They reported it as closed by my request. I had no problems with them.

Just one man's experiance...
