Post subject: VERY Strange Info: Home Depot/Citibank
I just got some reallly strange info when I talked to a CSR about my Home Depot card (issued by Citibank). I asked her about a credit line increase (my current limit is only $1000) but I didn't want a hard pull, and she said in order to process any CLI they would have to do a hard inquiry. I told her no, and then she said to hold on for one second. When she came back on, she said I have an "extended credit line" of up to $2300 that I could use. I asked her how that worked and she said that I can just make purchases on the card up to that amount. I told her the limit says $1000 and she told me that doesn't matter, there is no penalty to use it up to $2300.
I find this very hard to believe. I mean, c'mon... Citibank letting you go over your limit with no penalty or fee or anything negative happening? Honestly, I'm not willing to test it out to see if it is true. Has anyone else heard about this, or gone over the limit on the Home Depot card before? Is this only on the Home Depot card or is this true of all Citi cards? I thought this was very strange...

I've heard that Citibank CSRs have the power to increase credit lines to any number under $10,000 on their discretion alone. Possibly the CSR was indicating that if you did spend more than your limit, the limit would be increased to cover that "extended" purchase limit pre-authorized in the computer.
I also wouldn't want to test the idea based solely on what a CSR says. I'd rather have it in writing!

There may have been a delay before your CLI posted to your online account, check back to it or to the 800# from time to time and see if it's there.
If it never does show up then i would call back and find out why it doesn't. I've never heard of an invisible CLI before but then again different Banks do business their own way.

It wasn't a credit line increase, because she said they would have to do a hard inquiry and I said no. She told me about it more like its a feature of the account. You know, kind of like: "If you need to, you can go over your limit up to $2300 and the transactions will be approved without any penalty." I honestly don't believe this to be true however.
