Post subject: HELP !?!?!?! Problems with Actioncard by Bankfirst
My husband has an account with Actioncard by Bankfirst. He usually keeps the card empty but recently used it for a small purchase. They never sent us a bill but luckily I looked online and paid it which now left us with a bill of $4.95 for paying online. Should they neglect to send us another bill I will have to pay online incurring another charge of $4.95 which totals $9.90 in online payment charges. I want to shut this card off because he never uses it and has an annual fee of $59.00.
The problem is that I came across this list of complaints
http://www.cardoffers.com/partners/links/cardholders/details.asp?idmin=236&tempid=1&offset=0
and I am now actually scared to shut this card off !!!
The original company was sold to a sub-sub-subprime company named Compucredit that abuses their cardholders.
This company has neglected to send out bills to card holders at times, admitted that noone had checked the mail in 2 days to collect payments, cashed checks and not posted them to the accounts right away in order to charge late fees and, worst of all for me, when people have asked to have their accounts closed they have listed them as CLOSED BY CREDITOR on peoples credit reports. When people call them about it they say they can't do anything about it if they answer the phone at all. On their website they don't list a phone number at all under the link Contact Us.
If there was no annual fee I would let this be but since they neglect to send out bills at times I am afraid i will miss paying them when his annual fee comes due and then we will incur late charges and have a 30 days past due show up on his credit report.
My husband's credit is now mint and he no longer needs this old subprime card. I am scared that if we close this account and they list it as CLOSED BY CREDITOR that my husbands FICO score of 740-750 will go down.
People in many states have already called their attorney general and complained hoping for a class action lawsuit!!
I was wondering, how much of an effect on a FICO score does a CLOSED BY CREDITOR have? What other options do we have?
Any ideas/ thoughts would be appreciated

I haven't had any similiar experience, but I can't see that it is worth $59 a year for a card you don't use that is just trying to trip you up. You have to decided if taking your chance on closing is worht the peace of mind + $59/year of not fooling with these bozos.
That said, if I were you, I would mail/fax your cancellation notice, if at all possible with the most recent statement you have (hopefully you will get one this month). Then keep a copy showing that you requested the cancellation when you account was in good standing.
Not positive this will help if you have to dispute "closed by creditor" on your report, but it's the best I can think of.

Keep up the payments online if you have to, wait to get the next billing statement then pay it in full with a letter included for the cancelation department to please close this account and report accurately to the credit reporting agency that this account was closed by the consumer.
If they report the other way, you can dispute this with the credit reporting agency and include a copy of the cancelation letter that you sent to the credit card company.
They should comply, if they don't you can further dispute this matter with the FTC www.ftc.gov and report them to the better business bureau www.bbb.com

They have been reported to the BBB and the FTC by many, many people.
I am just curious how badly a CLOSED BY CREDITOR will effect my husbands FICO score.?
