Activating Replacment Credit Cards

Post subject: "Activating" Replacement Credit Cards
What with all the name changes and bank merges, we have ended up way way, way too many credit cards - few of which we use! I thought that, perhaps, if I did not call to 'activate', it might cause that card to be 'cancelled'.
Unfortunately, it did not work with the one I tried. I called the Customer Service number instead of the 'automatic activation' number and the CR person kindly cancelled it for me ... and I did not have to cut it up and return it.
Aggravating and a nuisance and it easier to just leave them alone. The 'activation' is generally just a ploy to offer unneeded insurances that are good money makers for credit card companies. It seemed a good idea and worth a try.
Anyone have an idea for cancelling unused credit cards?

Why?
If there is no annual fee, just keep it for the history.
If some of your card comps have merged, try some consolidations.
