Post subject: get credit card before purchase of vehicle or not?
I am planning on purchasing a vehicle soon. I have never had a credit card. I want to know if obtaining a credit card 6months to a year before purchasing a vehicle would be a good idea? i would purchase fuel with the card because its something that i am already paying for with cash and debit card. would this help or hinder my credit score when looking to get the best apr possible on a loan?

If you do not have any credit establish yet get the credit card first. Go for a secured credit card (New Millennium Bank). The reason for the secured credit card, they mostly report to all 3 credit bureaus, on a month to month basics. If you get a unsecured credit card they might not report to all 3 credit bureaus, and also on a month to month basics.
The reason for the credit card is to give you some type of establish credit, and also give you a credit score. Then you can go purchase your car, I'm in the same postion you are in. But I had my secured credit card since April of 2005, now I'm about to purchase my car soon. If you get the credit card make sure you make payment each month, and do not go over your credit limit. Also New Millennium do not do a credit check so you do not have to worry about a inquiry on your credit report. However they always report on a month to month about your payment and balance of your credit card. They also report to all 3 credit bureaus.

Back it up....Do you have any credit history? If you dont, it will be hard to get any loan or credit card. Yes having a credit card and a history of good habits (paying on time, etc.) will help your credit score and help you get a car loan with a good rate.

yea I believe i have credit...when the option became available for me to check my credit report online, it showed that my credit was in good standing, but i have not yet checked my actual score. i currently work a 40 hr./ wk, so i have a stable income coming in. I don't know what the criteria would be to get a secured credit card. Is there other secured cards besides new millinium bank?

The are a lot of companies that issue secured credit cards, I gave you New Millennium Bank, because I use them and never had any problems with them. Again the most important thing when dealing with secured credit card, is for that company to report to all 3 credit bureaus on a month to month basics. If you have good credit then you need to find what your credit score for each bureau, when you go for a car loan you do not know which credit bureau they will pull your credit report from. Also check with eloan.com for your car loan, if you get approve for a car loan they will write you a check and you could go anywhere to buy your car.
