I was on a nice balance transfer a few years ago on my GM card (CL $11,500) with about a $7000 balance when I received a notice that my credit limit was being reduced to $7305. This was around the time other banks cancelled cards of mine and reduced other credit limits, so probably my lessened availability had kicked out my account for review by Household.

That decrease ticked me off because suddenly my utilization on that card was over 90%–I had been real careful to keep it under 70%. And what if I had been using the card and had charges that hadn’t hit the account yet? I’d be over the limit. What was so urgent that the reduction had to be made at once with no warning, without asking me if other charges were going to hit? Still, I kept the card, paid it off when the special BT expired, and have only used it for special BTs since. I’ve asked twice for an increase in the credit limit, back to where it was–and I’ve been declined twice. Household won’t offer me a dime in an increase.

Household is now owned by HSBC and I recently opened both a checking account and a savings account with HSBC. I’ve got $50,000 in that savings account at the moment. I wonder if it will give me a CLI now?
