I’d heard somewhere that Capital One was being sued for failing to allow accounts to be closed. Well, I’m one of the latest victims.

Despite paying off my account in full and being promised in writing that the account would be closed once I did, they have refused to close the account. They have allowed one of their “partner” businesses to add unauthorized charges to the account and are charging me a late fee on those. Even if I pay, they will do it again next month. I am working to pay Capital One and I cannot get free.

Capital One–please make sure this ISN’T in your wallet. Please. Or else you will join the ranks of the enslaved.

Wow,

My experiences with CAP 1 Have been great.

What the heck is being charge to the card? And isn;t there some method by which you can stop the charges?

I hope it gets fixed for ya.

What is being charged to your account? If it is anything with an annual renewal, such as a magazine subscription, most credit cards will allow such a charge even after the account has been closed. It’s the merchant and not the card issuer who you have to contact. All you have to do is call the card issuer and tell them you did not authorize the charge. They will probably ask you to call the merchant yourself to get the charge cancelled. I’ve had this happen once or twice, and while it’s a slight inconvenience, it’s usually very easy to straighten out. Always cancel a card in writing and state in your cancellation letter that no new charges will be honored past such and such date. Will it always work? No, but you can always refer back to your letter as proof.
