Hi! Although i haven't been here long enough to recommend what cards you should pick to apply for, I can tell you that the more you read these posts, the more you will learn.
So far, I have been on this board less than a week. Since then, I've received pre-approved offers inthe mail and I'm getting better at determining which ones are headed to the shredder and which ones might be OK to look into more.
Credit Limits, balance transfer fees, rate, etc. All of these come into play so choose wisely and read, read, read the fine print. I'm sure the more knowledgeable credit experts will chime in here with more information but I just wanted to give my two cents.

Generally you need to determine what you want the card to be used for... emergency, travel, general, etc. Next you need to determine how you want to manage it or what credit limit you are seeking.
A credit card from a normal bank or credit union is generally easier to work with if you run into trouble. What is the interest rate, is there an intoductory rate and for how long, what is their billing cycle, do they offer services which might be of interest (example shell offers a gas reduction if you use their shell visa card)?
Over and above everything else, good common sense is key.
