I have recently acquired the Citi Dividend Platinum Select Master Card and was disappointed to find out that frequently, gas purchases at stations that happen to have a convenience store attached to them (there are many) are not qualifying for the 5% rebate because the vendor’s eletronic code shows them to be a convenience store and not a gas station. The credit card terms and conditions mentions that convenience stores do not receive the 5% rebate, however; I believe that the consumer who is there to buy gas and not a bottle of milk, will assume that their gas purchase will be counting at the 5% rate because they have no way of knowing what code the vendor submits to the credit card company. I recommend reviewing your credit card statement carefully on a month to month basis in order to determine which gas stations have qualified for the 5% and which ones don’t, so that you can plan which stations to frequent on a routine basis. Unfortunately, there won’t be any way to know ahead of time if you are traveling and aren’t frequenting the same gas stations as you would be at home. My first bill also wrongly calculated all my transactions at the 1% rate and I had to spend 20 minutes on the phone with customer service for them to determine that they made a mistake. Let’s hope things get better from here. It certainly looks like a card that offers good value. I’ll have to wait and see.

PAY-AT-THE-PUMP should be the 5%

I didn’t get DOUBLE MILES (DELTA) at a SHELL STATION because the card reader on the pump wasn’t working right (way below freezing) so I used the little booth…they must have a different “CODE” in the booth (a lube place is on the same property)

It may have a “LUBE PLACE” CODE in the booth

I complained to AMEX and they gave me some bogus excuse that…THAT STATION DIDN’T PARTICIPATE??? They did participate for years…

larslabs,

Thanks for your post & welcome to the board! Same is true for gas pumps attached to discount stores such as Wal-Mart and wholesale clubs. As you say, it depend on the code used and can vary from store to store in some cases. Please let us know what you find out. Everyone, please check your statements!

Out of curiosity, how did you find out about our website?

How odd. Almost all major brand gas stations now have convenience stores attached. However, they are PRIMARILY gas stations.

I also have the Citi Card and I always get the 5% discount at all Hess, Shell, Exxon, Sunoco, etc. stations. I often pick up a 20 ounce soda at the attached convenience store, but I go there for gas, not food. I cannot see one of these stations being coded as a convenience store.

On the other hand, if you’re filling up at an establishment that is NOT first and foremost a gas station, that’s something else again. A gas station run by the local 7-11 store will be classified as a convenience store because that’s their primary business. Can you be more specific as to which stations (brand name) were incorrectly coded.

I had the same problem at Meijer, when I used the Chase Perfectcard. I was getting only 1% instead of 3% every month. Meijer is about eight cents a gallon cheaper where I live (Northwestern suburbs of Chicago).

However, I had a much stronger case, since the Chase Perfectcard promises 3% on ALL GAS, no matter where or how pumped.

I never had a problem with their CSRs manually correcting my rebate every month on the phone from 1% to 3%, but this is a big time-consuming hassle.

I faxed them a letter explaining the situation and asked them to put a note on my account to flag Meijer gas and give me the 3%, and I have not had a problem since.
