We caught this in the AAA Visa Card e nrollment application. It looks like they are changing the rules starting Aug 2004. That the 5% rebate will be limited to 2% of your total net retail purchase for that billing cycle. It sounds like they will allow rebates for gas purchase only if you have substancial charges of other products.
Does anyone here has a different slant on this???

Effective August 1, 2004 – The Gas Rebate will be calculated at a rate of 5% multiplied by your total eligible gas volume (merchant category code 5542 transactions) for that billing cycle and limited to 2% of your total net retail purchases (excluding credits, returns and adjustments) for that periodic billing cycle. The rebate earned for each periodic billing cycle will post on the first day of the next month’s billing cycle statement in the “Payments and Credits” section. The rebate will appear as “<> Statement Gas Rebate.” All other rules governing the Gas Rebate Program, including the definition of qualifying gas transactions, remain in effect.

They want you to use your card for OTHER THAN GAS!!!

But 2% is still 2% MORE than I get for using MBNA QUANTUM

That’s not what it says. Spend $100 on gas and you’ll save at least $2. Spent another $150 on something else in a billing cycle and you’ll save the full $5. So the amount you save on gas will be between 2% and 5% depending on your other purchases during that billing cycle. But you always get at least 2% back.

Sounds like the Chase Perfect Card, even at 3%, is better than the AAA card with the new terms. At least Chase gives you 1% back on “nongas” purchases.

Any opinions on this?
