Well I thought I was fairly knowledgable about credit cards and knew how to use them, but here's something I've never before encountered.

I rented a car and used my credit card only for the required deposit, intending to pay cash for the transaction. I had a second driver on the contract who was to be the actual driver. My friend got into an accident 3 minutes after leaving the rental company. They were quite understanding and said that of course we could get another car. We went back and signed all the paperwork for the 2nd vehicle. They said it was a mere formality to close our the 1st contract. They never said that there would be any charge for car #1. However, a charge appeared on my card for 1 day's rental. They denied saying that there would be no charge for car #1. I've protested this through the credit card company, but since it was a non-transaction, there was no receipt given. The rental company insists that they never said there would be no charge for car #1. My word against theirs.

Now we get to the good part: we took out collision insurance with a $1,000.00 deductable. The insurance agent who is handling the case says that the other driver is probably at fault. We told this to the rental company who did not like having to wait, but we said that's the way it is.

I just got my new credit card statement and was amazed to see a $1,000.00 charge from the rental company. I wrote to the credit card company stating that I never authorized such a charge and have no paper work to back my contention, because how do you prove a non-event?

This whole thing scares the heck out of me. Here's a vendor who has my number and feels free to simply charge anything he feels entitled to. How do I know this is the last of it? What should I do? Should I ask the credit card company to change my account number, or what? Sorry for the lengthy message, but I need some advise. Thanks.

I would get a lawyer - and close that account. This is insane! Apparently they think it is their account instead of yours. Incidentally, could you share with us which car rental company this is? And you might want to post this on epinions.com also. Losing a little business might teach them a lesson.

Linda,

It's a small local rental company and we've already trashed them pretty good locally. But in case we have any New Jersey readers, it's U-Save Auto Rental d/b/a Blasko Auto rental, Rutherford, NJ.

Don't think I need a lawyer yet. Let's first see what the credit card company comes up with. Closing the account is a good idea. I'll simply report the card as lost or stolen & get a new card in a few days.
