A person I am doing business with voluntarily gave me his name, address, date of birth and credit card number to verify his trustworthiness. How far can I legally go in researching his credit history and validating his identity, given this information?

Check your local laws.On the my equifax report it eludes to employers, police agencies and busness associates being able to check your credit with or without permission.Public record information is on credit reports and that is just what it is, public record.
Bottom line contact the credit bureaus. They will probally want the request in writing with the other person's signature. The report will cost you about $10.00 depeding on your state.
Also, don't just judge this individual on the credit wothiness of his reports. Give him or her the oportunity to explain past mistakes or discrepancies. The credit bureaus are not a 100% accurate. Judge this person on other business references from other people including this person's past or present employers.
