how many miles do you have to earn before you can apply them to airline tickets? does a certain number of miles equal to a certain dollar amount in air travel?

Sue,

Great question! The answer to your question is that the amount of points required for a roundtrip ticket in the contiguous US varies...but is generally around 25,000. You usually earn one point for every dollar spent...so you are looking at $25,000 in credit card purchases for a free ticket. Some cards require less points for a free ticket.

For example, NextCard only requires 20,000
points for an American Airlines ticket. The MilesOne card (milesone.com) only requires 18,000 if you travel witing a certain zone.

While you usually earn one point per dollar spent, a few cards have different plans. For ex., the
Airmiles Plus card issued by First Union offer 1.2 points per dollar spent for a $75 annual fee (see link on our "Reward Cards Report").

For a list of other cards offering airmiles, including a rating of these cards, please see our "Reward Card Report".

Hope this helps!
