Post subject: How do Creditors Determine Credit Card Acceptance?

I am a college student and I am doing research on how the credit system works. I want to know how credit decisions are made. What determines credit approval? How do creditors decide who gets the Platinum, Gold, Silver, or Standard credit card? What are the criteria for each? I would really appreciate any information that you can give me.
