i have heard that a new law is in force that a payment to to the credit card company is considered on time if the payment is postmarked before the due date.

my question is: is this true ? does a law exist on the books that allows the postmark date to be used as a measure of when the credit card payment is sumbitted ?

Dear Steve,

Though I am not 100% certain, I believe that the credit card company needs to RECEIVE your payment by the due date and before a specific time within the day, it's then their obligation to post payment within 24 hours. This new law about postmarked postal dates I have yet to hear of, and I'm not sure if that law applies nationwide or by individual state.

Sincerely,
Alex D.

There was an attempt to pass a law that made the postmark date proof of timely payment a few years ago. Talk show host Bruce Williams was a big proponent. However, the credit industry has too much clout and it died in committee.
Imagine the lost late charges and interest charges if this became law. Who amongst us has not sent payments in plenty of time only to have it posted a day or two after the due date.

Anytime this happens you can call the credit card company and state your case. They will almost always credit back the late fees and additional finance charges. I've done this many times.
