Dear Jim,
I would look for a reward card that gives you the most bang for your buck. Most reward cards offer rebates, rewards, etc. to the equivalent of 1% - 2%. But some do offer higher rebates at specific retailers, such as a 5% cash back rebate offered at partcipating retailers through various First USA credit cards.
In terms of miles, the normal reward is one mile per every dollar spent. However, some frequent flier cards offer 1.2 miles or double miles at participating merchants. Of course, the majority of cards that offer additional miles also have higher annual fees.
It's best to do the math, if you frequently purchase at a specific retailer, look for a credit card that offers high rebates for that retailer. If you frequently fly on a specific airline, look for a credit card that offers bonus miles for travel on your favorite airline.
Also, if you pay in full each month, you may want to consider a charge card, such as an American Express card. They tend to have loads of benefits and access to a reward program (Membership Rewards).
Sincerely,
Alex Daskaloff
