Depends on your usage. If you drive, look into one of the gas & oil credit cards (Sunoco, Gulf, Shell) which give you a 4% or 5% on all purchases at one of their stations, plus a 1% rebate on all other purchases. Rebates are figured monthly.

Discover card requires that you work up to their highest rebate. They have a schedule giving you a 0.25% rebate on your first, I believe, $500.00, followed by a 0.5% rebate on your next so many dollars, etc., working up to a 2% rebate on all purchases above X dollars. You get a single rebate check each year. Check out their site for full details.

If you travel a lot, one of the airline mileage cards might be best for you. Every airline has them, and every one carries an annual fee.

Essentially the best card is the one that most closely meets your needs and allows you to take full advantage of your own personal buying habits. What works for you might not work for me, etc.
