The Army Airforce Exchange Services (AAFES) offers soldiers a credit card on
a delayed payment plan (DPP). I didn't notice the AAFES credit card on your
top 25 list and was wondering if the reason was because it wasn't evaluated
or because it isn't a good deal, based on your evaluation criteria. I am
working on a paper on the subject of business ethics, concentrating on
AAFES. Can you tell me how the AAFES credit card stacks up against their
civilian counterparts for value. Here is a brief description of the program
from a Dallas news article:
AAFES is in business to serve soldiers, airmen and their families around the
world. The Army and Air Force Exchange Service's (AAFES) Deferred Payment
Plan (DPP) credit card now has a lower interest rate and customers have two
promotion plans to choose from.
The interest rate for the Exchange Credit Program is a variable rate based
on the U.S. prime rate. With the recent drop in the U.S. prime rate AAFES
has also dropped the interest rate charged on the DPP card to 12.5%
effective with the December 1998 statements.
The rate in November was 12.75% and 13.25% in October. The 12.5% rate is
computed in accordance with the terms and conditions by adding 4.75% to the
U.S. prime rate of 7.75%.
A new promotion will allow customers with a DPP account to take advantage of
two opportunities. The first is 0% interest for three months, no down
payment, and no monthly payment for three months on all storewide purchases.
The offer doesn't apply to alcohol at Class Six Stores and runs from Dec. 12
through Dec. 24, 1998.
The second is a jewelry promotion plan that includes 0% interest for six
months, no down payment, and no monthly payment for six months on select
jewelry items. The promotion runs from Dec. 13 through Dec. 24, 1998.
"AAFES wants to help customers get those special gift items that are on
their lists, so we're not accruing any interest during the deferred period,"
said Jan Adrian, Marketing Manager. We're also not requiring a balloon
payment at the end of the deferred period, and we won't charge the customers
a penalty unless the account becomes delinquent," said Adrian.
These promotions apply to in-store merchandise as well as merchandise found
in the Exchange catalogs.
